Scope of document

This document provides information concerning the installation and cabling of the following OmniBAS™ Indoor Units (IDUs) units: • OmniBASTM-2W • OmniBASTM-4W • OmniBASTM-8W • OmniBASTM-4P

Target Audience

This document is addressed to certified technicians with wireless equipment knowledge and skills concerning the following: • Indoor Unit Installation (IDU). • Addition / Removal of IDU Cards. • Laying and Installation of Cables. • Preparation & Termination of: Ethernet, E1, Power cables e.t.c • Test & Measurement of cables (Ethernet, Optical, Power). • Equipment Grounding to the Main Grounding System.

Overview of OmniBAS Product Family

Introduction The OmniBAS™ family of Intracom Telecom IP MW PtP portfolio comprises:

• Split-mount systems: − OmniBAS™ Indoor Units (IDUs) 1RU / 2RU high and 19″ wide. − OmniBAS™ Outdoor Units (ODUs) & antenna systems.

• All-outdoor system: − OmniBAS™ OSDR (Outdoor Software-Defined Radio) integrating

everything (baseband / controller / modem / radio) into a robust enclosure.

OmniBAS™ IDUs

The OmniBAS™ Indoor Units (IDUs) are shown below:

Indoor Unit (IDU) Description

OmniBAS™-2W

It is a Native-IP, 1RU unit accommodating up to two modems. It can be positioned at the edge of the network, or can be used as a repeater and even as a ring node.

Interfaces: • 2 x GbE (electrical) &

2 x GbE (electrical or SFP)(1) • - / 16 x E1

OmniBAS™-4W

It is a Native-IP, highly-modular 1RU indoor unit and is capable of accommodating in the same chassis the following cards (identical with OmniBASTM-8W): • a combination of 4 modem cards • one interface card • one controller card Modem cards can be flexibly chosen based on the connection type to the outdoor unit: • radio connection to an ODU using

coaxial IF cable • PonE connection to an all-outdoor

unit (i.e OmniBAS™ OSDR) system using Ethernet cable

Interfaces: • 2 x GbE (electrical) & 4 x GbE (SFP) • - / 16 / 32 x E1 2 / 4 x STM-1 (VC-12)

Indoor Unit (IDU) Description

OmniBAS™-8W

OmniBAS™-8W is the base for the leading CBAN (Converged Backhaul Aggregation Node) supporting flexibly all MW technologies appropriate for HetNets backhauling. It is a Native-IP, highly-modular 2RU indoor unit and is capable of accommodating in the same chassis the following cards: • a combination of eight modem cards • two interface cards • two controller cards Modem cards can be flexibly chosen based on the connection type to the outdoor unit: • radio connection to an ODU using

coaxial IF cable • PonE connection to an all-outdoor

unit (i.e OmniBAS™ OSDR) system using Ethernet cable

Interfaces • 2 x GbE (electrical) & 4 x GbE (SFP),

per control card • - / 16 / 32 x E1, per interface card • 2 / 4 x STM-1 (VC-12), per interface

card

OmniBAS™-4P

OmniBAS™-4P is an 1RU, half-rack IDU unit used as an expansion PonE unit to enable connectivity and control of up to four all-outdoor units (OmniBAS™ OSDR).

Safety Precautions

PROPER GROUNDING Never power up the indoor equipment not yet connected to a proper grounding system. There is risk of equipment failure and/or electrical shock. Ensure that the indoor grounding system measures a path resistance less than 4 Ω.

INDOOR EQUIPMENT PROPER SWITCHING ON / OFF Never connect or disconnect the power supply cable(s) to or from the indoor equipment when the local dc power supply source is on. There is risk of equipment failure. Ensure the local dc power supply source is off and then connect or disconnect the power supply cable(s) to or from the indoor equipment.

PROTECTION FROM LIGHTNING Never leave the IF cable coming from the Outdoor Unit without adequate lightning protection. There is risk of equipment failure and/or electrical shock. Ensure that the IF cable coming from the Outdoor Unit is properly grounded as described in the Outdoor Radio Equipment Installation Manual (GDC-001/81 manual code).

ESD PROTECTION Always use proper antistatic protection (i.e. grounding bracelet, antistatic bags, etc.) when handling the system cards. Parts bearing the ESD sign (see left) have ESD sensitive exposed components.

4 Before Starting the Installation

4.1 Installation Prerequisites

Introduction This section describes the main actions that must be taken in consideration prior to the equipment installation.

Site survey Site survey should take place before starting the installation, taking into account the

following:

• Location of appropriate grounding points. • Location of appropriate power supply distribution points. • Location of cable conduits available for routing the coaxial cables

(interconnecting the indoor with the outdoor equipment) • Location of the network port distributors. • Thermal considerations and cooling requirements for the rack-mounted

equipment. • Equipment rack occupation details.

Network port distributors

Regarding the network ports (inclusive of STM-1, Ethernet, E1) provided by the indoor equipment, suitable optical (or electrical) network port distributors should be available. The exact location of the network port distributors, as well as the network ports to reserve, should be known prior to installing the indoor equipment. Also, all the reserved ports on the network port distributors should be qualified and tested before realizing the network connections with the indoor equipment.

Indoor premises conditions

The operating conditions (temperature, humidity) at the indoor premises should meet the specifications given by the manufacturer of the indoor equipment.

Indoor grounding system

All racks within the installation premises should be connected to a low-resistance grounding system. Cable conduits Appropriate cable conduits should exist for the routing of installed cables,

inclusive of the coaxial IF cable(s) connecting the indoor equipment with the outdoor transceiver boxes on the building’s roof.

Power supply requirements

The OmniBASTM - 2W/4W/4P subracks require connection to a DC distribution board accommodating either one or two Magnetic Circuit Breakers (MCB, single-pole, 7 A, 80 V dc, B-curve for Telecom Applications). The OmniBASTM – 8W subracks require connection to a DC distribution board accommodating either one or two Magnetic Circuit Breakers (MCB, single-pole, 25 A, 80 V dc, B-curve for Telecom Applications).

Maximum power supply length

Regarding the power supply cables to be used, calculation of the maximum length depends on the available power supply source and the OmniBASTM-IDU disconnect voltage, which is -40.5 V. By assuming the following: • Use of -48(1) V nominal voltage. • Availability of 2.5 mm2 or 4 mm2 multi-stranded copper cables. • Maximum power consumption of OmniBAS systems (taking the connected

radio systems into account), which is: • 250 W (OmniBAS 4W) • 550 W (OmniBAS 8W),

then, the maximum power cable lengths(2) are as follows: • OmniBASTM- 4W: 84 m (2.5 mm2), 138 m (4 mm2). • OmniBASTM- 8W: 38 m (2.5 mm2), 63 m (4 mm2).

Lightning protection

The network port distributors (optical distributors excluded) and the power supply distributors should be equipped with the appropriate gas arresters, to provide protection against lightning conditions. Such conditions may induce voltage peaks on the cables, and thus disturb the operation of the indoor equipment. For this purpose, all electrical distributors should be connected to the local grounding system to allow the installed gas arresters to operate.

Safety The indoor equipment premises should be of restricted access.

Only trained, authorized personnel should have access to the installed equipment. Appropriate labeling should exist at points with high risk of contact with hazardous voltage. A list with emergency phone numbers (e.g. medical assistance numbers) should be hung at easy-to-view positions. Also, recommended are for safety purposes, a fire detection system and fire extinguishers (installed at easy-to-access points) inside the installation premises.

Power connection overview

Safety requirements require a single pole circuit-breaker to be employed between the local dc power supply source and each power supply of OmniBASTM-8W. The circuit-breaker must disconnect the –V pole of the power supply. Before plugging or unplugging any power cable into OmniBASTM-8W, you must set the circuit breaker(s) to OFF!

Procedure To connect the power supply, proceed as follows:

Step Action

1 Switch-off the circuit breaker(s) connected between the OmniBASTM-8W and the local dc power supply source.

2 Plug the power supply cable(s) into the power supply receptacle(s) on the front panel of the OmniBASTM-8W without applying excessive force.

Applying pressure while the connector is inserted incorrectly it might cause damage.

If you want to disconnect the power supply cable, push downwards the metallic secure lock on the upper part of the connector (1) and pull outwards to disconnect (2).

6.2 IF Tails

IF Tail purpose You should connect the IF cable coming from the Outdoor Unit to the IF tail to protect the ODU receptacle on the front panel of OmniBASTM indoor units against mechanical damage, which might occur in case of direct connection of the heavy IF cable. Use the requirement tool to tighten the SMA connector.

Procedure To connect the IF tail(s), follow the steps below:

Step Action 1 Never connect or disconnect an IF tail when

OmniBASTM-ODU is ON and Operating! There is risk of equipment failure.

2 Fix the both ends of the IF tail , as shown below: OmniBAS-2W:

3 Tight the N-type female connector onto the IF cable coming from

the Outdoor Unit. 3 Use the tie-wraps for IF tail cable fastening. 4 Repeat for the remaining IF tails that may exist.

The above procedure is applicable for all OmniBASTM-IF modems types. For WOE modems please refer to WOE (Wireline Modem Optical/ Electrical on page 22.

IF Tails, Continued

Connection using O-ring

Optionally you can fix the N-type connector of the IF tail onto a metallic surface through the nut and washer provided inside the IF tail packaging. If you have such a metallic surface, follow the steps below:

1 Open a mounting hole on the metallic surface as in the figure below (dimensions in mm).

2 Put the Ο-ring onto the N-type connector of the IF tail and pass

the N-type connector through the metallic surface you have. 3 Put the toothed lock washer and nut onto the N-type connector as

protruding from the metallic surface.

Appendix-A: Modem Card Installation / Removal

Prerequisites The following prerequisites are common for any modem of OmniBASTM- Products Family and must be taken in consideration before starting any insertion or extraction of the modem card.

The Modem Card is hot swappable.

It is recommended before proceeding to the card installation, to wear a grounding bracelet and attach it to one of the two appropriate receptacles on the chassis as given below:

Procedure for OmniBASTM-2W

In order to insert a modem card to OmniBASTM-2W indoor unit, please follow the procedure below:

Step Action

1 Remove the modem dummy plate and keep it for maintenance reasons.

The Modem dummy plate is required in 1+0 configuration for proper thermal management.

2 Slide the modem card into the appropriate pair of guides and push it in until it connects to the backplane connector.

3 Hand-tight the two screws on the front panel of the modem card

to secure the card in place.

OmniBASTM-2W Input alarms connection circuit

The dry-contact input alarms are internally pulled up to +3,3 V. When an external switch is closed, the corresponding signal is “low” (alarm condition).

OmniBASTM-2W Output alarms connection circuit

The alarms transmission circuit receives alarms in TTL form from the microprocessor and routes them as external alarms in dry-contact form. When a “high” signal enters the relay’s driver, the relay is activated and current passes through the load of the corresponding alarm output.
