CURIOSIDADES: ¿QUE SIGNIFICA LA CATEGORIA 5 EN UN HURACAN?

Es muy probable que hemos escuchado mucho, especialmente durante estos días, sobre las categorías de los huracanes, pues intentemos explicar el asunto.

La fuerza de los huracanes y ciclones se clasifica de la escala de Saffir-Simpson se-gún LA INTENSIDAD DEL VIENTO. La escala fue desarrollada por el ingeniero Herbert Saffir en 1969 junto a Robert Simpson, por aquel entonces director del Centro Nacional de Huracanes de Estados Unidos.

En realidad, todo partió de una idea del ingeniero cuando trabajaba para las Naciones Unidas, mientras estudiaba las construcciones de bajo costo y como afectaban en áreas propensas a sufrir estos fenómenos. Entonces Saffir se dio cuenta de una cosa: no existía una escala apropiada para describir los efectos de los huracanes.

A partir de la escala sismológica de Richter que describe los terremotos, el ingenio ideo una escala similar que tenía hasta cinco niveles, todos basados en la velocidad del viento, todos también descri-biendo los posibles daños sobre estructuras. Cuando el hombre terminó su trabajo, lo cedió al Cen-tro de Huracanes de Estados Unidos. Poco después, Simpson le añadiría a la escala los efectos de oleaje e inundaciones. Así fue como se materializaron las 5 categorías, las cuales quedan definidas de la siguiente forma:

Categoría 1: La velocidad del viento del huracán entre 119/153 Km por hora (74/95 Mp/h) En este caso, no hay nivel de daños en las estructuras de los edificios. Las perdidas llegan básica-mente por las casas flotantes sin amarre, árboles o inundaciones costeras.

Categoría 2: La velocidad del viento del huracán entre 154/177 Km/h (96/110 Mp/h). Existirán daños en tejados, puertas y ventanas. Importantes daños en la vegetación y casas móviles, casi como inundaciones en puertos.

Categoría 3: La velocidad del viento del huracán esta entre 178/209 Km/h (111/130 Mp/h). Da-ños estructuras en edificios pequeños y destrucción de casas móviles. Las inundaciones destru-yen edificaciones pequeñas en zonas costeras y existe la posibilidad de inundaciones en tierra adentro.

Categoría 4: La velocidad del viento del huracán esta entre 210/249 Km/h (131/155 Mp/h”). Da-ños generalizados en estructuras con protección, posibilidad de desplome de tejados en edificios pequeños e inundaciones en terrenos interiores.

Categoría 5: La velocidad del viento del huracán es de más de 250 Km/h (más de 156 Mp/h). Catastrófico. Destrucción de tejados completa en algunos edificios. Las inundaciones pueden llegar a las plantas bajas de los edificios cercanos a la costa. Es posible que se requiera la evacuación masiva de áreas residenciales.

CURIOSITIES: WHAT DOES CATEGORY 5 MEAN IN A HURRICANE?

It is very likely that we have heard much about these hurricane categories especially during these last couple of days, so let us try to explain the mat-ter.

The force of the hurricanes and cyclones is classified on the scale of Saffir-Simpson according to THE INTENSITY OF THE WIND. The scale was de-veloped by the engineer Herbert Saffir in 1969 next to Robert Simpson, at that time director of the National Center of Hurricanes of the United States.

In reality, it all came from an engineer's idea when working for the United Nations, while studying low-cost constructions and how they affected areas prone to these phenomena. Then Saffir realized one thing: there was no appropriate scale for describing the effects of hurricanes.

From Richter's seismological scale describing earthquakes, he made a similar scale that had up to five levels, all based on wind speed, all also describing possible damage on structures. When the man finished his work, he transferred it to the US Hurricane Center. Soon Simpson would add to the scale the effects of waves and floods. This was how the 5 categories materialized, which are de-fined as follows:

Category 1: The wind speed of the hurricane between 119/153 Km per hour (74/95 Mp / h) In this case, there is no level of damage to the structures of the buildings. The losses basically come from floating houses without mooring, trees or coastal flooding.

Category 2: The wind speed of the hurricane between 154/177 Km / h (96/110 Mp / h). There will be damage to roofs, doors and windows. Significant damage to vegetation and mobile homes, almost like flooding in ports.

Category 3: The wind speed of the hurricane is between 178/209 Km / h (111/130 Mp / h). Dam-age structures in small buildings and destruction of mobile homes. Flooding destroys small buildings in coastal areas and there is the possibility of flooding inland.

Category 4: The wind speed of the hurricane is between 210/249 Km / h (131/155 Mp / h "). Generalized damage to structures with protection, possibility of roof collapse in small buildings and flooding in interior lands.

Category 5: The wind speed of the hurricane is over 250 km / h (more than 156 Mp / h). Cata-strophic. Destruction of complete roofs in some buildings. Floods can reach the lower floors of buildings near the coast. Massive evacuation of residential areas may be required.
