Community Centre Newsletter December 2019
THE COMMUNITY CENTRE WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE HOLIDAYS DECEMBER 25, 26, & 27 AND JANUARY 1ST
Manager’s Corner
Greetings!
As the hustle bustle of the holiday season approaches, let’s remember to focus on what is important in life…not the shopping, not the material gifts, but the blessings we have with family, friends, health, and the beautiful place we live.
We have some exciting events coming up in December such as the Delta Choral Society concert on the 1st to get us in the holiday spirit, Shari’s Christmas Extravaganza Dance on the 7th and the Gala NY Eve Celebration on the 31st. A Kin Crafts session making a lovely J-O-Y triptych will be held on the 5th (see sample at Reception). Our Christmas Luncheon with Linda Kidder and a visit from Santa will be on December 6th - bring your camera for a photo opportunity with the jolly fella. The ElderCollege Singers will perform their Christmas Concert here on the 10th.
In January there will be a new computer help session for any of your technology challenges, and Tai Chi - which had a great turnout for the introductory session, begins in earnest. There’s also a session called AGING - an Olympic Event; we’re all doing it, so let’s learn how we can do it well! We also have our great free movies, and of course, our annual GIANT Book Sale!
Starting in 2020, there will be changes in fees for some of Kin’s classes. It’s not all bad news, prices will go up, slightly, but a few will go down to get in alignment. No matter which direction your favourite class is going, KinVillage is still one of the best deals in town. Where else can you get a class with a top quality instructor for $4!??
Remember 2020 memberships are available for purchase starting on Dec. 2nd. If you have a friend who would benefit from all we have to offer here, consider getting a membership as a gift or stocking stuffer.
I wish you all a holiday season filled with joy, love, peace, and good health. And if you are alone during the holidays, there is a free Take a Senior to Lunch event sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen (see me) on Dec. 15th, and a free Christmas dinner (see our notice board) on Christmas Day so you can enjoy camaraderie and good food. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU!

Christmas Spirit
The Christmas Season is upon us, decorations everywhere, lights along our busy streets, ornaments at each craft fair.
Shopping malls are packed with people finding gifts for loved ones and friends.
Children are excited and hopeful they’ll receive all the latest trends.
Christmas music is on the radio, traditional shows on TV,
decorating decisions being made and where to put the Christmas tree.
It’s important, not only at Christmas, to find some quiet time,
to sit, relax, slow down our minds, so we’ll feel we’re in our prime.
Love is always the very best gift we can give and also receive. A card, or a call to a loved one
is how Christmas spirit’s achieved.
Merry Christmas

LAST MONTH’S WRAP-UP December 2019
Christmas Market November 16th Sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to our bake sale table and made purchases. It raised nearly $700.00. Customers were generous with donations at the door and we raised almost $1,000.00. We’ve set the date for next year’s market for November 21st.
Remembrance Day Luncheon November 8th A HUGE thank you goes out to those who purchased luncheon tickets for 11 veterans so they could enjoy this very, very special event. They had a lovely luncheon and each veteran was acknowledged and thanked for their service, and a bit of their history was shared with the audience. We all had a delicious lunch, then heard the amazing Beauty Shop Dolls singing their beautiful harmonies. Congratulations to Anita Senn who won $81.25 in the 50/50 draw. She intends to give back, she says, by buying from our Unique Boutique. Congrats also to Jim Butler who donated his $81.25 win to the Legion.
Delta Music Makers Concert of Remembrance November 10 It was standing room only for the concert and the Delta Music Makers rewarded everyone with a wonderful multi-media performance. We had a generous audience enabling us to give the DMM over $1,100 in donations.
Langley Ukulele Ensemble November 23rd
These multi-talented youth wowed the audience with their beautiful voices accompanied by their nimble fingers on the ukulele. The audience donated $1,000.00 to help them with their annual trip to Hawaii.

SEVEN TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY DURING THE HOLIDAYS
Change your focus. The holiday season is a wonderful time to work on cultivating quality connections with family and friends. Instead of seeing it as a series of parties where you can indulge in food and drink, focus instead on improving relationships and making memories.
Avoid overeating. Let’s face it, food is a major
theme of the holidays. Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, food excesses can lead to digestive troubles including indigestion and gastroesophageal reflux. The best way to prevent these digestive issues is to moderate your food intake.
Stay active. Don’t neglect your physical activities during the holidays. It’s even more important to stay active during this period. Besides being good for your overall health, exercise can help you get rid of stress and forget about your worries for a while.
Limit your consumption of alcohol. No doubt there are numerous occasions to raise a glass
with family and friends during the holidays. However, drinking to excess, even if it’s only once in a while, can cause serious damage. As usual, moderation is key.
Prevent infections. Handshakes, kisses, and hugs are great ways to spread infections like colds, flus and gastroenteritis. Prevent them by washing your hands often and keeping your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth.
Take time for yourself. If you’re feeling tired, you risk exhaustion and increasing your level of stress. Between shopping, cooking and hosting, make sure you take a moment each day to just relax, clear your mind and take some time out to pamper yourself.
Skip the shame. If you go off track during the holiday season, don't give up. There’s always January
ahead, and good health is a great New Year’s resolution.

COMING IN JANUARY December 2019
Jan. 28 - Where'd You Go, Bernadette is an inspiring comedy about Bernadette Fox (played by Cate Blanchett), a loving mom who becomes compelled to reconnect with her creative passions after years of sacrificing herself for her family. Bernadette's leap of faith takes her on an epic adventure that jump-starts her life and leads to her triumphant rediscovery.
Review: Cate is ama ing as this character. It's a fun quirky movie that I found delightful!

a FREE movie at 1:30 pm
Jan. 14 - Yesterday - Jack Malik is a struggling singer-songwriter in an English seaside town. After a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed. Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, Jack becomes on overnight sensation with a little
help from his agent. REVIEW: A near perfect movie - touching funny and romantic. Patel is superb and matched well with Lilly James. The music is top rate and the direction and writing near flawless.
