1 COMMISSION ON AGING Dementia affects our community. But did you know our community can even more powerfully affect individuals who live with Dementia? Those who are living with memory loss or who are caring for someone living with the dementia can play an active role in our society. It is possible to have a good quality of life with dementia. This is made possible through an educated community. For instance, if a local restaurant had servers who were aware of communication techniques to help someone with dementia feel comfortable ordering food, caregivers could take their loved ones out more often. It can take 30 seconds for an individual living with dementia to process a question and provide a response. A regular drink order can be less than a 15 second interaction, but when serving someone living with Dementia it may take a few extra minutes. Our society is instant-gratification focused and this can let those who live with dementia slip through the cracks. Individuals & caregivers find that it’s just easier to stay home verses going out and dealing with populations that do not understand. Well, what if Newaygo County changed that? What if we choose to be a community that serves and cares for those living with dementia? The Commission on Aging (COA) is striving to promote Dementia awareness. The main area the COA is working on promoting dementia awareness is in our Dementia Friends Sessions. COA is trained to host a free one-hour session for local businesses, church groups, social groups, etc. Some of the agencies and businesses who have already participated in Dementia Friends include: a dentist office, insurance agency, realtor company, senior service agencies, and community collaborations. If you’re reading this and know you would like to participate in the next Dementia Friends Session, please call the COA to see when our next one will be (231) 689-2100. In the mean time here are five things you need to know about dementia: 1) Dementia is NOT a normal part of aging. 2) Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain. 3) Dementia is not just about having memory problems. 4) It is possible to have a good quality of life with dementia. 5) There’s more to the person than the dementia. COMMISSION ON AGING

Dementia affects our community. But did you

know our community can even more powerfully affect

individuals who live with Dementia? Those who are

living with memory loss or who are caring for

someone living with the dementia can play an active

role in our society. It is possible to have a good

quality of life with dementia. This is made possible

through an educated community. For instance, if a

local restaurant had servers who were aware of communication techniques to help someone with dementia feel

comfortable ordering food, caregivers could take their loved ones out more often. It can take 30 seconds for an individual

living with dementia to process a question and provide a response. A regular drink order can be less than a 15 second

interaction, but when serving someone living with Dementia it may take a few extra minutes. Our society is

instant-gratification focused and this can let those who live with dementia slip through the cracks. Individuals & caregivers

find that it’s just easier to stay home verses going out and dealing with populations that do

not understand. Well, what if Newaygo County changed that? What if we choose to be a

community that serves and cares for those living with dementia?

The Commission on Aging (COA) is striving to promote Dementia awareness. The

main area the COA is working on promoting dementia awareness is in our Dementia

Friends Sessions. COA is trained to host a free one-hour session for local businesses,

church groups, social groups, etc. Some of the agencies and businesses who have

already participated in Dementia Friends include: a dentist office, insurance agency,

realtor company, senior service agencies, and community collaborations. If you’re

reading this and know you would like to participate in the next Dementia Friends

Session, please call the COA to see when our next one will be (231) 689-2100.

In the mean time here are five things you need to know about dementia:

1) Dementia is NOT a normal part of aging.

2) Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain.

3) Dementia is not just about having memory problems.

4) It is possible to have a good quality of life with dementia.

5) There’s more to the person than the dementia.

THE SILVER FOX BOX

Thanks to the baby boomers, over 10,000 Americans are turning 60 each day. This phenome-non is called THE SILVER TSUNAMI. This COA newsletter symbolizes the tidal wave of nearly 25% of Newaygo County folk who are now over 60. This is the twenty-fourth issue of THE TSUNAMI, we hope you enjoy it. We are in unprecedented times. A world pandemic the likes of which we have not experienced since 1918! Here are a few thoughts as you face COVID-19:

Stay home—Unless you have a serious health issue or do not have food available, stay safe in

your home.

Make the world come to you—Order your prescriptions and groceries over the telephone or online.

Or, call on a family member or neighbor to drop them at your front step. If you need meals on

wheels, call the Commission on Aging (231-689-2100) and leave a message.

Spread kindness without spreading germs.

Share what you can—If you can share something safely with a family member or neighbor, maybe

some of those extra rolls of toilet paper, please do.

Stay updated—Know what’s happening in the neighborhood and the world around you.

Check in—Connect well with family members and neighbors. Let them know how you are doing. If

there is anything that the COA can help with, do not hesitate to give us a call.

Use the gift of free time—Write letters to your grandchildren. If you have the technology, use

Facetime, Zoom or Skype. Read some good books. Sort through some of the piles that have

accumulated in your home over the years.

We are hoping that things will return to normal by June. But at this point, we are not sure when things will return to status quo at the Commission on Aging or in the world around us. But, we do know that this too shall pass and that the sun will come out tomorrow. Remember that no storm lasts forever. Hold on, be brave, have faith. Every storm is temporary. We never face the storm alone. Keep in touch with THE SILVER TSUNAMI and the Newaygo County Commission on Aging. We are here to come alongside anyone who is 60 and over. We are making available caring services that enhance the quality of life and support the independence of older adults. Give us a call if you would like to know more.

Activities Subject to Change

Here are some things to help us smile:

I need to practice social-distancing from the refrigerator.

Public Service Announcement: Every few days try your jeans on just to make sure they fit.

Pajamas will have you believe all is well in the kingdom.

I don't think anyone expected that when we changed the clocks we'd go from Standard

Time to the Twilight Zone.

This morning I saw a neighbor talking to her cat. It was obvious she thought her cat

understood her. I came into my house, told my dog … we laughed a lot.

We can't wait to see everyone gathering at meal sites again.

May meal site openings and activities will be spread by calls

and word of mouth.

Okay I'm soon-to-be headed into the snow, just where I'm going I

do not know, Newaygo County Commission on Aging they pick me

up right at my front door, it's out for lunch and nothing more, a

little stop here in a little stop there, let me tell you the bus driver

Verne he always takes care, making sure that each passenger is

buckled in their seat, and making sure that our conversation is

always so sweet!

So us seniors don't worry and us seniors don't care, cuz we know

that our bus driver Verne will always be there. So us seniors we

would like to thank Commission on Aging for their love that they

share and for letting us know how much that they care.

Thank you Newaygo County Commission on Aging!

The White Pine Adult Day Group

(WPADG) COA’s Adult Day Services are available to

assist both the people in need of care and

caregivers. Adult Day Services provides

opportunities for socialization, recreation,

and activities to increase mental skills. Some

transportation and a noon meal are

provided for those receiving care. By

providing a safe place for care recipients to

socialize, exercise, participate in activities,

make some choices, and remain socially and

cognitively active. The Adult Day Services

assist to relieve some of the physical and

emotional stress of the caregiving

responsibilities, thereby helping to keep

people, caregivers and care recipients, in

their homes for as long as possible.

WPADG Dates to Remember

BINGO & BP Checks every Wednesday Golden Arts: 5/26 & 6/30 Trips: June 18– John Ball Zoo

In February COA sends a handful of staff to the Art and Science of Aging Conference at GVSU. This year’s conference had 18 different break out sessions for staff to attend. Each of us came back with more tools for our toolkits. Staff shared some of their take-aways from the

break out sessions:

• The key-note speaker shared his passion for the end of life process. He shared 3 F’s. Fitness, Finding our calling (passion) and

Forgiveness.

• When faced with difficult diagnoses, the person should be empowered to choose the medical care they receive in accordance to what is most important to them in following their life goals and meeting

their needs for their best quality of life.

• We need to think of quality of life, not just quantity

• Dying is only what happens on the last day, on all the other days we are LIVING!

• Sleep is important for physical, mental and emotional health.

• Our life stories matter - what we learn by deliberately telling and listening to life stories can open doors and windows to

relationships with spouses, family members, friends, caregivers, health-care professionals, and others.

• What we eat is what we are. The Mediterranean Diet Pattern loaded with Polyphenols, Antioxidants, Omeag-3 Fatty

Acids, and B-Vitamins can make a difference in physical and particularly brain health.

• We need to build HOPE into our lives. One way to do this is to start and maintain an Attitude Journal. In this journal, we

should date and list at least three things that we are thankful for on a daily basis.

• A healthy-sedentary adult reduces oxygen consumption at a rate of 10% per decade after age 30, while a healthy-active

adult only reduces oxygen consumption by 5% per decade. It is NEVER too late to improve your cardiovascular ability!
