May brought a Session reminiscentof days of old. It was actually a littledifficult to get out on the dance floor dueto the numbers of dancers who werethere. The Cell Block 7 lived up to ourexpectations…and exceeded them! Theirtune selection and performance wereoutstanding…but then…what’s new? It wasgreat to see the attendance way up,following several months of much lowernumbers. I certainly hope to see this trendcontinue in the coming months.

We were happy to learn that ourPromotions Manager, Nora Dale, has foundresidency and employment at an up-scalesenior apartment complex in Turlock. Wewish her all the best. We are equallyunhappy though, as this requires Nora toresign her Board position. This finds uswithout a Promotions Manager. At ourBoard meeting, we agreed it is the job ofevery one of us to use every opportunity to

promote the activities and attendance atour Society Sessions.

We missed Dave and MarlenaTygett and their handling of the raffle. In spite of their absence, we had asignificant increase in raffle revenuedue to the fine efforts of Past President

Larry Tyrell and his assistants. As an aside,Bob Romans at mid-day asked “Noparasols?” As you know, those are alwaysprovided by Dave and Marlena. Wepromised Bob to remedy that situationbefore the next visit of the Cell Block 7 atour October 6th Session.

Our June 2nd SJDJS Session brings usthe Flying Eagles Jazz Band. They are avery-very danceable group that you surelydon’t want to miss.

hope they had somuch fun they’ll beback.

Oh dear, I didn’t see Ray Farley to-day. Maybe he doesn’t like to be teased.Ray, I promise I won’t accuse you againof smiling.

Roberta Conrad has some great talesto tell, and they are all true. Some thievescame into her back yard and removed anentire metal shed! The lawn mower was ina different shed, but they found it, and tookthat too! She was advised to get a dog tobark and scare thieves away. A little dogshowed up on her doorstep, but it turnedout to be so old that it could neither see norhear.

When I heard someone singing Louisi-ana Fairytale, I grabbed my camera andrushed to get a picture of Dick Lock-wood’s first public vocal. But it was thegolden throated Jim Fusaro singing. Ihadn’t really believed there were words tothat lovely tune.

HEARD BETWEEN SETSBy Billie Ricker

Now this wasmore like it. The ta-bles were full, and sowas the dance floor. Actually, when thetables were full the dance floor wasn’t, andwhen the dance floor was full, the tablesweren’t. Some kind of mathematical law, Ithink. Too deep for me. But thanks, BobRomans, for assembling such a talentedcrew to entertain us. Some of my favoritepeople are in the Cell Block 7. Tom Downstold me that this is where he first met hiswife. I’m not kidding when I say goodthings happen at SJDJS.

It was good to see Kathy Felkins, oneof our most loyal members. She looksbeautiful in red. Gladys Duncan was side-lined from dancing temporarily. Shetripped over a suitcase someone set downin front of her. I don’t know if that wasbefore or after the champagne that wasserved on the limo.

What a pleasure to see Ann Fosco andIrv Glandon. Ann’s friends Barbara andDan made a hit with me. Barbara becauseshe said what fun it is to know Ann, andDan because he paid me a compliment soextravagant that I had to laugh. And youcan’t have too many laughs!

Beverly Martin confessed that she andAudrey and Larry did not know why Icalled them “virtuous,” so I clued her in.Gosh, I can think of lots of reasons some-one might call me virtuous. (Oh, stopsnickering!)

Judy Griffith introduced me to herniece, Ashley, & Caleb Johnson, and hernephew, Arnold, & Kim Berser. Theylook like a fun quartet of music lovers. I CAROL & JIM FUSARO

In place of guns, CellBlock 7 used brass canons(otherwise called trumpets, trombones, tubas) to hold ushostage during their perfor-mance at the May meeting of

our society. Ah, the roar of the crowd, thesmell of the valve oil. There was abso-lutely no way you were going to escapethe building once the sounds of the bandcaptured your ear. Talk to anyone whowas there and you will spend a very longtime listening to ravings about how greatCB7 was, putting people on the dancefloor and playing tunes that were so exqui-sitely done (exquisite being the best adjec-tive I can think of). It is easy to understandwhy they have such a large following (bylarge following, I don't mean 4 overweightpeople, but lots of average weight people.)In the last newsletter it was said that thereshould be a drink called the CB7, andIrene Stolberg came up with a wonderfulconcoction: In a 12 oz. glass put 7 icecubes, 7 dashes of Angostura Bitters, 7 tsp ofSeagrams 7 (1 and 1/2 oz) and 7 oz of 7-up.Stir. Enjoy. She had a sample made by thebartender. I tried it and went to 7th heav-en. If you'd like to be an official "block-head" (CB7 follower) you have anotherchance when they return in October.

Pete Main, CB7 reed player, said he'sforming a band of all men without hair, called The Bald Eagles, which remindsme–in June the guest band will be TheFlying Eagles from Sonoma. As do eagles,

their music soars. I don't know if there areany bald eagles among them, but I do knowthat the band is loaded with talent. Comebuild your nest at the Elks Lodge, June Two.

I must, absolutely must, mention theappearance of Dick Williams, under whosedirection the jams sets were some of thebest ever. He led us to the level of " Wow"- -both for the audience and the jammers onstage!" Hot-diggity-dog, what a wonderfulSunday it was, with another looming on thehorizon.
