Transcript of OMBUDSMAN NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2011
CID Detachment Fort Gordon,
Welcome back from the Holiday Stand Down. Everyone
has come back fully charged after having spent well-deserved
quality time with loved ones.
We have a full schedule for year 2011, with all of our
instructors extremely busy teaching first term and operational
Sailors, Coast Guardsmen, Airmen, Soldiers and Marines the
skills necessary to keep our military services ready to win
wars.
We have many new staff and students that reported to CID Detachment Fort
Gordon over the holidays, and I would like to welcome them and their families, not
only to our Detachment, but also to the Fort Gordon area. There are many family
activities and opportunities to be had in and around this area.
For our Sailors who have recently separated or transferred out over the last several
weeks, please know that I am grateful for all of the contributions you have made
while at CID Detachment Fort Gordon.
I would like to especially recognize PO1 Johnson for earning his Master Training
Specialist qualification, as well as, CPO Phillips And PO1 Bostic for being selected
as our Detachment's Senior Instructor and Instructor of the Year and CTR1 Salloum
for being selected as Sailor of the Quarter 1st Quarter 2011. Congratulations!
Before I close, I want to encourage all CID Detachment Fort Gordon Sailors to
review the new CID Enlisted Information Dominance Warfare Specialist Program
instruction and know that this mandatory qualification program is a great opportunity
for all of us to become the best Sailors we can be.
Very Respectfully,
J. E. Cooper

Feeling stressed or “out-of-sorts” and don’t know whom
to call? Need help navigating Navy life’s unique ex-
periences? The FFSC’s Navy Clinical Counselor offers

Dear CID Detachment Ft. Gordon Sailors and Families ,
It seems like the winter has found its “chilly” spot here in Geor-
gia! I am sure that many of you are enjoying this cold weather. In
my case, since I was born and raised in a tropical climate in
Southern Spain, I really like warm weather. I am very surprised
that I have to use my winter jacket everyday!
I hope life is treating you well. Life has been good to me. My
husband, our daughters and I had a really quiet Christmas season, but we really
enjoyed each second of our time together. I think the time went so fast that by the
end of the Christmas break, I was asking myself, where has the time gone Lola?
Did this happen to you too?
Like many of you, I also did my New Year’s resolutions. One of the things on
my list was making myself more accessible to the CID families. So, I am pleased to
announce you that starting on Tuesday, February 1st, I will be available for you at
the Detachment on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12pm-2pm. You are invited to
come over the Detachment and visit me. I will have some coffee and some freebies
ready for you. The office number is 107 and it is located on the main deck. I am
looking forward to meeting with you soon!
Although we missed January’s newsletter, the February ombudsman newsletter
is packed with lots of events, photos, good news and important information that I
have saved to share with you. Do not miss a second in checking out each of the
articles in this issue.
Please, feel free to contact me if you have any suggestion or question, or if you
would like to have some coffee with me. I would love hearing from you!
Sincerely your Ombudsman,
Lola Rivera

2011 Chief Petty Officer Exam
Electronics Technician First Class (Surface Warfare/Air
Warfare) Holman was born in Beaufort, South Carolina.
She graduated from South Gwinnett High School, Snellville,
Georgia and attended the University of Georgia in Athens
for three years before dropping out and joining the United
States Navy in 1999 to fulfill her love of traveling. After
completing Electronics Technician “A” school at Great
Lakes, IL and Satellite Communications “C” school at Fort
Gordon, GA in 2000, she reported to Naval Communica-
tions and Telecommunications Station Diego Garcia for her
first duty station. Following NCTS Diego Garcia in 2001,
Petty Officer Holman transferred to AFSOUTH NATO,
Naples Italy and joined the Deployable Communications
Module – Mike, deploying to various NATO regions during
her tour and setting up communications and air control data-
bases for ground commanders. Wanting to deploy on a ship,
Petty Officer Holman re-enlisted for and received orders to
Direct Altitude and Identity Friend or Foe Readout (DAIR)
“C” school at Pensacola, FL in 2004 and deployed on her
first official ship, USS George Washington (CVN 73) in
support of the Global War on Terrorism, earning her
Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and her Enlisted Avia-
tion Warfare Specialist designations. Petty Officer Holman
then transferred in 2006 to her current duty station, Center
for Information Dominance Detachment Fort Gordon, GA to
serve as an instructor. There she completed an Individual
Augmentee Tour in Djibouti for six months, after which she
was promoted to First Class Petty Officer and earned recog-
nition as a Master Training Specialist.
ET1 Ann Holman married SSG Christopher Holman in
2008 and gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Alexander Ja-
son in 2009.
Petty Officer Holman is an outstanding Sailor getting ready
to PCS afloat. She will be sorely missed at CID DET FG.
On 20 January 2011 all of our CID DET PO1s took the
Chief Exam at the Army Reserve Center.
We wish all the PO1s the best of luck at becoming
CPO Board Eligible!
Health Tip of the Month Substitute the following tasty, healthier alternatives for some not-so-good-for-
you foods, and make a big difference in your family’s long-term health:
Frozen low-fat yogurt for full fat ice-cream
6 oz. Pan-grilled salmon for 6 oz. Grilled beef steak.
Grass-fed (lower in fat and cholesterol) for grain-fed beef “When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength can-
not fight wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.” Herophilus

End of Tour and Farewell Luncheon last December It is always hard when we see people we care de-
parting. Last month, our Detachment said good-bye
to three excellent Sailors which were a very impor-
tant part of the Detachment: CPO Steve Hayes, PO1
Paul Fultz and PO1 Billy Spears.
The farewell luncheon was held on December
9th at the Carolina Ale of Augusta. More than 25
Sailors and family members attended this luncheon
in honor of Chief Hayes, PO1 Fultz, and PO1
Spears.
After lunch was served, MCPO Reigart presented
end of tour awards to the Sailors, followed by the
Detachment Ombudsman who also presented fare-
well gifts to the spouses. Enjoy the pictures!

PO1 Roger Johnson's End of Tour and Farewell Last week, Detachment Sailors met at the Sconyers Restaurant in Augusta to cele-
brate PO1 Johnson’s end of tour and farewell. PO1 Johnson’s, his wife, Fujiko, and
one of their two children, delighted us with their company during lunch. At the end
of lunch, PO1 Bostic awarded PO1 Johnson’s for his great work, and excellent
leadership. MCPO Reigart also
spoke a few words of gratitude and
ensured PO1 Johnson that “he will
be in everyone’s prayer” during his
next assignment.
PO1 Johnson was a great addi-
tion to the CID Detachment.

While I was doing some research, I found the following inter-
esting website that allows you to order a pillow with the photo
of your Sailor on it, AT NO CHARGE!!!! This is a great treat
especially for those spouses whose sailors are deployed or are
going to deploy soon. To check out the website, please visit
http://www.pillowprojectusa.com/ to fill out the forms and
upload your Sailor for the pillow. Again this is done for free,
however the company does ask for a “donation” after the pil-
low is delivered. The donation request is in the box along with the pillow in a pre-
stamped envelope. Again it’s a recommendation and is not required.

Operation Kid Comfort creates custom-made quilts for children of deployed mili-
tary personnel who experience grief from missing their mom or dad. Armed Ser-
vices YMCA volunteers collect photographs to make “photo-transfer” quilts that
feature impages of the deployed family member. For children six and under quilts
are made, and pillows are made for older children.
You may request a quilt or a pillow by completing the Quilt Request form found
at http://www.asymca.org/what-we-do-3/national-programs-services/operation
-kid-comfort/okc-quilt-request/ . You will need six to nine photographs of the
family or parents, if possible provide these via Internet. Email completed form
along with your pictures to Susan Simms, [email protected].
Please know that as all materials and services are donated, there is no fee for this
program.
