CONCERT PROGRAMSufiComposer: Traditional, arranged by
Omar Faruk Tekbilek
Style: Sufi medley
Mode: Hicaz mode played in 4/4 and 2/4 meter
This medley celebrates Sufism, the mystical dimension of Islam whose followers are called Sufis. The lyrics emphasize that there is one universal God for all humanity and nature. The song is a prayer in which the follower of the universal God is joined by the mountains, stones and birds as well as Moses, Jesus, Muhammad and all other prophets who are in search of spiritual communion with the almighty. The chanting of the word “Hu” (an ancient term for God) is meant to bring one closer to the creator.
Lyrics With mountains with stonesI call on you O my LordIn dawn time with the birdsI call on you O my Lord
In heaven with JesusAround the mountain with MosesWith his cane in his handI call on you O my Lord
With Yunus, with MevlanaWith Hagj Bektash the SaintI call on you O my Lord
My father said Hu, say Hu, my sonSay Hu then your breath will open upLet it untie all the nutsThe sound of God himself is inside you
HaydarComposer: A. Ekber Cicek
Style: Devotional folk song
Mode: Nikriz mode played in 5/8 meter
A folkloric song that reflects upon the ecstatic state of harmony with the higher power sought by Sufis. “Haydar,” meaning God head or one through whom God speaks, is the name given to a person who reaches this divine state through all forms of existence. The “forty wise men” refers to a higher level of existence in the spiritual order of Sufism. In Sufi poems and literature, the nightingale represents the one who is in love, while the rose repre-sents the one who is the object of love.
Lyrics – 1st verseFor 14,000 years I searched in the art of whirling. I found the truth of your being in the wilderness. I drank the divine wine in the wine house. I struggled in the presence of the forty wise men
ChorusHaydar, Haydar, HaydarTrue friend
2nd verseI surrendered myself to my teacher. I’ve been in this world so many times, in human form. I became a singing nightin-gale in the Garden of Eden. For long time I was in agony for the rose
ChorusHaydar, Haydar, HaydarTrue friend
ChantingYou are the one who is aliveYou are the peaceYou are the highest oneAnd the most merciful of all
GardenerComposer: Teslim Abdal
Style: Achiklama style from the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey
A lover of God enters a garden, but neither the garden nor the gardener realizes his presence, exemplifying how intimate the love of God should be. This garden symbolizes a spiritual place where one enters and unites with the divine and reaches ultimate wisdom.
LyricsI entered the garden in the early morningNeither garden nor gardener realizedI collected all the blossomed rosesNeither garden nor gardener realized
I opened the door of the gardenI thought I was in the HeavenI met my lover in quiet aloneNeither garden nor gardener realized
The nightingale of the morning started to sing. She sang and got what she wishedTeslim Abdal also got his rewardNeither garden nor gardener realized
Oglan BoyunComposer: Traditional
Style: Azeri folk song
Mode: Acem mode – major scale played in 6/8 meter
This love song is from the point of view of a female who is hopelessly enamored with the physical appearance and beauty of her lover. She likens him to a mountain deer with a beautiful face and eyes and asks him not to slay her with the powerful way that he looks at her. She says, “I love you and I can’t get enough of you. You are my sweet pain.” The 6/8 meter is a signature rhythm of the folk music of the Azeri people, who live on the west side of the Caspian Sea in southern Russia.
LyricsOh boy, I die for your presenceYou are the deer of the mountainYour black eyebrows and your eyesThey are the invitation of love
Please do not kill meI am in love with you
Your voice is like a birdI am fond of your tiny bellyI cannot get enough of your sweet lipsYou are my sweet trouble
I Love YouComposer: Hasan Isikkut
Style: Contemporary instrumental
Mode: Muhayyer Kurdi mode played in 4/4 meter
This romantic song’s melody relays a lover’s longing for his beloved, whom he cannot marry.
