Learning Objectives• Revision of surgical technique for oesophageal and gastric resections

• Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of minimally invasive approaches compared to open resections

and perform these procedures on cadavers

• Assessment of patients prior to surgery

• Understand and formulate management plans for post-operative complications

• Review of surgical energy modalities

Course content

OLYMPUS UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER CADAVERIC MASTERCLASS

COURSE OVERVIEW

• Intensive three day course (for option A)

• Number of attendees limited

• Fresh frozen cadavers

• Course certificates provided

• High faculty-to-participant ratio

• Interactive classroom and cadaver instruction

• CPD applied (18 points for three day course 6 points for one day course.)

• Course dinner

Newcastle Surgical Training Centre

Day one will consist of lectures and cadaveric

“theatre” time. The focus will be gastric mobilisation

and D2 lymphadenectomy.

Day One - Monday 4 September 2017

Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle

The third day includes live operating links

throughout the day, plus seminars and group

discussions on:

• Minimally invasive versus open resection and

merits of hybrid procedures

• Managing complications: leaks/stenosis/fistula

and feeding jejunostomy

• Type II/Type III cancers - which operation?

• The ‘not very fit’ patient

• Enhanced recovery

Day Three - Wednesday 6 September 2017

Newcastle Surgical Training Centre

Day two will involve lectures and cadaveric

“theatre” time. This will include the thoracic phase

of oesophagectomy, lymphadenectomy and

reconstruction methods. Neck dissection and

extended lymphadenectomy will also be discussed.
