IntroductIon

Welcome to The Art Of PEN, a showcase of stunning photographs – all of them taken on the PEN range of cameras from Olympus, by all sorts of people with varying levels of experience. That’s the beauty of the system: great quality and control but easy to get into.

I have been a PEN user from the beginning (just over two years ago) and love the quality they produce. But it’s also its simplicity and the freedom to experiment that won me over. The beautiful rose opposite was so easy to shoot and yet it looks spectacular as a big print.

The size and weight are the other big benefits. This kind of performance used to be limited to big, ugly SLRs (which I also use!), but now anyone can take amazing images without having to lug around a heavy monster of a camera. Lots of committed SLR users are buying PENs for travelling and many have started to use them on some professional jobs – they are that good. I recently used two on a wedding.

If you are a compact user who is frustrated by the quality or creativity you can achieve, then a PEN is great bet for you, too. They all come with a clever Live Guide that lets you control the key photographic effects without having to know all the jargon. You will get great shots from day one and can learn as you go. As it is a true system, you can also add lenses and accessories to suit your shooting style.

Last but not least, there are the art filters. Another Olympus first, these let you experiment as you take the shot. In this collection you will find just a few examples of what you can do – and you can see a whole lot more online. There you can also see some movies because on top of all its other abilities a PEN can shoot outstanding HD video!

So if you want to break free from the restraints of your current camera, pick up a PEN and see things your way.

Enjoy!

Shot by Sean Emmett, Marketing Director, Jessops, at the launch of the PEN E-P3. Sean had not used anything like the PEN before but quickly got the idea of the Live Guide, which let him tell the camera to “Blur Motion”. Experienced photographers know how this is done but if you don’t, the camera will help. Jessops are showcasing the entire PEN range in their larger stores, together with the key accessories. You can also order and collect any PEN at any store.

Andy Rose is a Senior Buyer at Argos and admitted to being a total novice, having only used a compact in the past, but he too made use of the Live Guide to blur the background. This is a classic photo technique for putting emphasis on the main subject and is all but impossible with compacts or camera phones. The quality of the PEN means you can blow up images as big as you like with exceptional quality. Create your own wall art: pick up the PEN E-PL1 at any Argos store nationwide.

Nick Mason works as a specialist in intensive care medicine and his passion is photographing stunning landscapes. He has used Olympus E System cameras for many years, and still does, but has recently started using a PEN because of the size and weight. If you are climbing to get the best view, weight counts. Weight also counts when travelling and this shot in Paris shows just what you can do if you have a PEN with you. After all, you may well have left a big camera back in the hotel... Philip Volkers is a professional photographer who uses the right equipment to suit the job. If it’s high fashion, it’s usually medium format. If it’s extreme conditions, it’s the Olympus E-5. But to take anywhere it’s a PEN: here in London’s Theatreland using the grainy black and white art filter. On the latest PENs you can even “bracket” the art filters so the camera records each shot with copies using filters you select. See more of Philip’s work at: www.philipvolkers.com

Claire Voyle is a member of Olympus’ in-store training team and hadn’t been a serious photographer until she got her hands on a PEN. This shot shows the impact of a creative viewpoint and also demonstrates the differential focus effect you can get using one of these cameras when compared to a compact – which would have left the background sharper. Claire used to work at a Currys Megastore where you can pick up the PEN Lite or PEN Mini, along with one of the very affordable lens converters that adds to your creative options.

Sarah Cheetham from the Olympus Marketing department took these images and was a committed compact user, feeling a bigger camera was simply too much hassle. She has also shown that trial and error yields results. Dramatic Tone is really aimed at scenic shots and not recommended for people as a rule, but why live by the rules where art is concerned? When not discovering a new-found talent for photography (it’s well established that women often have a more natural eye for a picture than men), Sarah can be found making sure stockists like Amazon have all the latest information, and you’ll find every PEN item there.

Thirteen-year-old Max Thackara took this classic street shot of his sister Isabella in Newquay and made use of one of the built-in frames that the PEN offers. As well as adding frames to images as you shoot, you can also combine the filters on some models. Add ‘pinhole’ to ‘pop art’, for example. Since you can see the effect before you take the shot, you can create your art as you shoot. Max also experiments with his dad’s old manual lenses, which can be attached to the PEN with an adapter. In fact more than 600 lenses of all makes can be fitted, extending the fun and flexibility even further. Find out more at one of Olympus’ specialist stockists including Jacobs, Park Cameras and SRS by Googling PEN Elite Centres for a full list.

When I first came across Ally Clark I was intrigued by his description of himself on his website: you will have to read it to see what I mean. If you want to treat yourself to a print have a look, too. I loved this shot taken in Mexico; a mix of real and abstract that would look great on a wall. Neil Buchan-Grant is a travel photographer. He recently spent a month in Sicily using the opportunity to try out a PEN with the new 45mm F1.8 prime lens, to see if the compact size delivered the quality he was used to and needed for commercial work. Designed mainly for portraits, this lens allows exceptional control over the focus and depth in an image. This shot would have been impossible with a compact camera or a zoom lens. Amy Davies is a camera and photography writer and has used all manner of cameras in the past. Her main camera is a DSLR, but with the PEN she feels she can be more creative, shoot on the fly and always be ready to capture the moment. Shooting the gorillas in Bristol with the PEN was great fun as each statue had such a unique personality they could be matched with the different creative filters and the fun aspects of using a PEN. For instance, using the ‘pinhole’ feature really allows for the eyes to be a highlight.

Never go out without a camera and never stop taking photographs. That’s the mantra of long-time Olympus photographer Barry Lategan. An expert image-maker since the ’50s, Barry has shot everything from Vogue front covers to The Doors. It is the immediacy and portability of the PEN that appeals, as he works on one of many street based projects, often taking hundreds of images a day! If you look very closely you can just see him waving right in the middle. It may be art but no one said it had to be serious! Barry is also rather taken with the range of colours that the PEN comes in – especially the Mini – and you can order all of these at all good Olympus stockists including Barry’s beloved John Lewis.
