Patrons Delighted by New Digital Services"I'm hoping to recreate a little bit of nostalgia and bringing the family together," said Tinley Park resident Laura Pawlowski, who has enthusiastically used the library's new Conversion Station to convert her old VHS tapes into modern digital video. In February, the library launched two new digital services, the Digi-tal Media Studio, geared toward media and content creation, and the Conversion Station, where analog media-- photos, negatives, audiocassettes, 8mm videocassettes, VHS tapes, or vinyl records-- may be converted to digital formats.

Another Tinley Park resident, Shirley Drobnak, has used the Conversion Station to scan a fragile baby book from 1945, digitally enhance a 1917 portrait of her father as a toddler, and digitize an audio cassette recording of the Prairie View JHS band. When asked how she envisions the Conversion Station impacting the community, Ms. Drobnak said, “Legacy. We take our history, enjoy it now in the present, and preserve it for the future.” Ms. Drobnak plans to digitize a 1992 VHS recording of No Place Like Tinley Park, a musical and centennial celebration of Tinley Park’s incorporation, and will donate copies to the library and Historical Society.

If you have old media gathering dust, consider requesting a Conversion Station appointment! Both the Conversion Station and Digital Media studio may be reserved online at tplibrary.org/services/media-labs or by calling a computer assistant at 708.532.0160, x5738. Our new media labs are intended to be self-service stations, but when scheduling your appointment, you may request that a 30-minute instructional session with a virtual services librarian be included with your appointment. These instructional sessions are available to help you get started on your project, and according to Ms. Drobnak, the tutorials remove the intimidation from the process of learning new technology.
