There will be events across London to mark the occasion, and in Hackney we will be celebrating in our own way, withlots going on in and around Shoreditch Park. (See our fourpage pull-out programme inside)These celebrations also mark the end of the ShoreditchFestival, an eight day series of events run by ShoreditchTrust and supported by the Council. A highlight will be the first ever Tour de Hackney on 17August which includes a ride around the borough’s green spaces. Hackney is a great place to be a cyclist – we havepreviously been named Best Bike Borough – and I hopethis summer’s events encourage more residents to getcycling and take part in the many sporting opportunitiesavailable across Hackney. EVERYONE loves atrip to the cinema, but for a group ofyoung people from a

Hackney estate it was a oncein a lifetime experience.

Members of the FawcettEstate Youth Committee gotto watch a short film theymade on the big screen at theRio Cinema in Dalston.

Their hard work anddedication was on show forall to see at the official

premier of ‘H-Town orOuttatown’.

The group, aged between11 and 19, helped write, direct and produce the

movie, which they also hadacting parts in.

It tells a story of howyoung people work togetherto tackle fears and ignorancearound teenage pregnancy.

It also touches on streetculture and the way in whichyoung people living in innercity areas fight the pressureto get involved in anti-socialbehaviour.

Described as ‘hard hittingand gritty’, the film wassupported by HackneyHomes, the Council, charityElevate and CityZEN.

Tania de St Croix, ElevateYouth Outreach Worker, said: “It was really great tosee the young people’s workon the big screen. I was veryproud of how they showedgreat commitment byorganising the event andmaking a speech in front of anumber of other youngpeople and professionals.”

The committee is currentlyworking on their latestventure, producing adocumentary exploring therelationship between thepolice and young people.

No laughing matterCOMEDIAN Richard Blackwood came to Hackney to helpraise awareness of the fight against knifeand gun crime in London. The TV presenter was the starattraction at a day that featuredcatwalk shows, dance displaysand a play with an anti-violencemessage. The event on 16 Julyat the Hackney Road offices ofA4e, a company that helps the unemployed into work, alsoraised funds for the NSPCC.

Water baby boomTHE summer holidays have seen nearly 400 Hackneyyoungsters improve their swimming skills.Primary school aged pupils have taken advantage of theTop Up Swimming scheme, run by GLL, to improve theirskills. The youngsters, who were all identified as beingunable to swim by the Hackney School Sports Partnership, can now swim a minimum of five metres unaided. This isvital, when drowning is the third most common cause ofaccidental death in the UK’s under 16s.Pupils were awarded certificates and free family swims, inrecognition of their achievements. Marnie Collins, swimming co-ordinator, said: “These young people haveachieved so much in two months when you think thatmost of them were non swimmers. Being able to swimindependently and safely is a life saving skill.” There are numerous swimming courses availablethroughout Hackney during the summer, for all ages andabilities, through the London Swim School. In addition, there’s free swimming for under 18s on offer at five

swimming pools in the borough, includingLondon Fields Lido. For more info visit:

Waves of sound‘We’ve never had

a Saturdaynight like thisbefore’, says a

bemused lifeguard at theLondon Fields Lido.

Behind him a man dressedas a crocodile splashesaround doing battle withtwo equally oddly attiredwomen. Meanwhile, a chapcalled Le Couteau Jaune –dressed in a yellow kagooland matching shorts –coaxes strange sounds fromequipment that would be athome on Tomorrow’sWorld, circa 1982.

All the while, the audiencebobs up and down, listeningto tunes only audibleunderwater. This is WetSounds, the UK’s firstunderwater music festival, the brainchild of sound

engineer and Hackneyresident Joel Cahen, supported by the Council’sCultural Services Team.Having toured nine UKswimming baths, 19 Julywas the closing galaperformance.

“Music sounds the samein water as it does in air, butit’s somehow a bit morepresent,” says Joel. “You feelthe sound on your body. Partof the perception isthrough the bones.”

To create thiseffect, Joel hasimmersed thespeakers

in water. So while many ofthe 200-strong crowd sitaround the pool, it isnecessary to literally take theplunge to experience thismusic to its fullest. There issomething magical aboutlying on your back on asunny, summer evening, watching a cloud making itsslow progress across the skyas Ernesto Tomasiniimprovises aneerie

version of Oh I Do Like ToBe Beside The Seaside. Pipedthrough the water, the oldmusic hall standard isstrangely evocative.

Tonight isn’t all aboutrelaxation however.

As the set by Andrew Lilescomes to an end with athundering wall of feedback– accompanied by high-pitched barking – all those inthe water becomeimmediately aware of theaccuracy of Cahen’scomments about feeling the

music through the bones. Most people have come to

see the headline act, stalwartof Hackney’s industrialmusic scene, Nurse WithWound. As rain clouds circleoverhead, the trio perform amesmeric set on a variety ofcurious instruments.

Cahen hopes to make thisunusual festival an annualevent. Let’s hope hesucceeds.

hackneypeopleHackney is one of the most diverse places in the UK. In this regular feature, we profile theborough’s great & good or just plain interesting

Tony Robinson on his flying visit to Hackney Marshes last month (above); as Baldrick in Blackadder Goes Forth (below); and an artist’s impression of what the new Hoxton East London Line Station could look like (below right)

TV presenter TonyRobinson is well-known for diggingup the past in

Channel 4’s Time Teamshow.

But it’s the future theHackney-born actor is mostinterested in at the moment. And it’s one year inparticular that has got himgoing – 2012.

“Hackney has alwaysstruggled because ithasn’t had theopportunities otherboroughs have,” saysthe much-lovedcharacter who playedBaldrick in cult comedyBlackadder, and theSheriff of Nottingham inhit children’s show MaidMarion and Her MerryMen.

“That’s why what’shappening now is soexciting. I felt verydespondent about my homeborough for a long time.Various attempts have beenmade in my lifetime to makeHackney better for localpeople, but all of them havefoundered. A lot of that wasdue to the poor transportnetwork.”

But now theborough is toget a 21stcentury link tothe Tube

network, via the EastLondon Line extension, dueto open in 2010. Tony said:“I think it will transform theborough. Hackney has somuch more to offer the restof London. Everything elsewill stem from the improvedtransport.”

He spoke to HackneyToday during a flying visit tothe Marshes while shootinga film about the borough tocelebrate the OlympicHandover on 24 August –when London becomes theofficial host for the 2012Games.

It is clear Tony ispassionate about

Hackney, which hedescribes as ‘the realLondon’. His mumcame from Dalston, and his dad lived inMare Street. He wasborn at HomertonHospital and movedto South Woodfordwhen he was young.

But Tony was keen tocome back as soon as hecould, and moved into theold family home in AmhurstRoad during his 20s, wherehe stayed for 15 years.

“Hackney is the good oldEast End,” he said. “My dadlearnt all the old Cockneysongs at the HackneyEmpire, and taught them tome.

“Three hundred years’ ofRobinsons have lived inHackney and Tower

Hamlets, andgenerations ofmy family areburied atAbney ParkCemetery.”

Like somanypeople wholive inHackney, hisfavourite thingabout theborough is itsdiversity. “Because it hasbeen diverse for so long,” hesaid. “People are used toabsorbing new people. Ofcourse there’s aggravation, but not nearly as much as inplaces where there isn’t thepsychology of absorption.”

Despite having moved outof the borough some yearsago, Tony still enjoysvisiting, especially shoppingat Ridley Road Market.

Back to the future andTony’s tip for 2012 is tocapture it all. “We should all

get ourcameras out now,” he added.“Because the 2012 Gamesare going to bring so manypositive changes.

“Hackney will now getmillions of pounds worth ofnew investment. I neverthought I’d hear that in mylifetime.”

RESIDENTS are leading theway in a new pilotprogramme to create thegreenest estate in theborough.

The Hackney Homesscheme will help people onthe Whiston and Goldsmithestate reduce their carbonfootprint and save money atthe same time. It kicked offwith a fun day on 12 July, where people learnt howenergy saving products workand picked up helpful hintson recycling, transport, andsolar heating.

Residents also receivedfree, energy-saving lightbulbs and an electricitymonitor from npower, that

show how much energy andmoney can be saved by notleaving appliances onstandby, turning lights offand washing at lowertemperatures. The EnergySavings Trust estimateshouseholds can save anaverage of £280 per year byusing energy moreefficiently. Resident DoreenEmerick, said: “Weare proud to be thefirst estate to take on

the challenge to be thegreenest in Hackney. We seethis as a win win for us. Notonly will we save money, wewill also do our bit to savethe planet.”

Secondary school children fill the Round Chapel for the Senior Singing event on the third day of the three-week festival

THOUSANDS ofchildren broughtmusic to life at the11th Hackney

Music Festival. It saw more than 4,000

children performing at theRound Chapel over threeweeks in July.

There were 55 schoolslined up to perform a widemix of music fromcountries all over the worldsuch as Africa, Brazil,China and Greece.

We interviewed one ofthe young singers beforethe concert started. Thenine-year-old said: ‘If we allsing together it will soundgood. I feel really happyand excited.”

We asked if this festivalwould help her in anywayand she

said: “It will make me moreconfident with singing.”She had taken part in theconcert before, and wasinspired to take part againbecause she ‘likes to singthe songs’.

We thought it was amarvellous festival to go tobecause the singers werereally talented. It was goodto see the different primaryschools participating andsuch young, talentedsingers.

Rhasan also saw ourprimary school choir andmet his old teacher. It madehim happy to see them

performing because itbrought back

memories of whenhe was in the choir.

We liked thesongs because werecognised a lot ofthem. We hope wecan go to theHackney MusicFestival next year.

“It will make memore confidentwith singing. Ilike to sing thesongs ”YOUNG people had their

contributions to the localcommunity recognised atthe Hackney Youth Awardslast month.

This annual eventrecognises not onlyachievements, but alsoshows the majority ofyoung people in Hackneybehave well and that it’sonly actually a minoritycommitting crimes.

I won an award. It wasvery scary in the run-up tothe presentation, because Icould see my name andwhat section I would begiven my award in theprogramme. As it got closerto being called, I got a bitnervous about having to

walk up and receive mymedal and certificate fromsomebody higher up in thecommunity. Some peoplewere lucky enough to gettheir awards from RadioOne DJ Trevor Nelson.

The night was full ofevents, with actsperforming in between theaward presentations. It wasa chance to show off thetalent in Hackney, includinga tribute song produced forthe occasion.

The awards have beengoing for around nine yearsnow and I feel veryprivileged to have won one.

I wasn’t there alone onthe night – a few of myfriends hosted the nightand one of them performeda song.

I want to let you knowsomething else, guess what?I now know what it feelslike to walk on the redcarpet. Do you?

Special award winner

I felt really happy about being nominated for the Hackney YouthAwards. I won a medal, a certificate and a trophy for being aSpecial Youth Award Winner. I won because of my contribution to my community. It makes mehappy to know that my volunteering skills are being appreciated.I’ve been involved in several volunteering organisations such asContrast magazine and Headliners, where I’ve written a numberof articles. I’ve never won anything this important before so I think it’s a greatchange for me. It’s something I’ll always treasure and remember.

Shakespeare in Shoreditch,Hackney Empire Studio, 26 JulySURELY Shakespeare has neverbefore been portrayed as soutterly lost as by Matt Wade. HisWill wanders the mean 16thcentury streets of Shoreditch, narrating his past and futureplans, dodging hookers andsearching for a job in theatre.Producer Darrie Gardner, whoalso plays Elizabeth I and AnneHathaway, and director WendyRichardson promise a physicalproduction that covers

Shakespeare’s life – persecution, censorship, the plague,Elizabethan court – and offerssome light relief. So in the spaceof an hour, they deliver a series ofvignettes portraying thefriendship between Will andfellow playwrite ChristopherMarlowe; their complicatedrelationship with the Earl ofSouthampton; and Will’sentanglement with ‘The DarkLady’ and his own family. Scenesof violence are rendered withgrim relish: plague deaths, murders, swordfights and tortureall accompanied by enthusiasticpanting, groaning and writhing. If Will’s wide-eyed narration

doesn’t float your boat, extractsfrom Shakespeare arethoughtfully chosen andperformed with an energy andtiming that suggest the companycould carry off a full production oftheir own.You can catch the show at the OldBlue Last, pretty much on the siteof Thomas Burbage’s CurtainTheatre, where a young Willarrived looking for a job all thoseyears ago.Shakespeare in Shoreditch isat The Old Blue Last, GreatEastern Street, EC1, on 9, 16,23 & 30 August. LOVEBOX LondonWeekender, Victoria Park,E3, July 19&20NOW in its seventh year,Lovebox proved itself, yetagain, to be the festival fordiscerning music fans – whohate camping! Spread over a sunny longweekend, party-goers had twobites of the musical cherry, without having to live in thepsychedelic equivalent of arefugee camp for two days. The programme boasted adiverse collection of artistsrepresenting the various tribesof grime, world music, house, indie and Eighties revival.Saturday saw kids barelyembryos in the 80s, embraceThe Human League’s futurepredicting electro; while elderstatesmen of house, GrooveArmada, got the crowd ‘shakingthat ass’ with a slick, firework

punctuated set; leavinginternational working class heroManu Chao to whip them into afinal freestyling festive frenzy.Sunday saw much to enjoy onthe smaller stages as well asbig name headline acts.Howling Bells played a Gothic-tinged set in front of anaudience that doubled in size. Also well-received was LiamFinn, whose songcraft, alliedwith some fierce guitar playing, recalled both the Beatles andHendrix, and provided awelcome counterpoint to JackPenate’s knock-kneed warblingon the main stage. Goldfrapp followed, with songslike ‘Happiness’ from theirfolksy, summer of love inspiredlatest album providing theperfect soundtrack to a chilledout afternoon in the park, before they picked up the pacewith old hits like ‘Ooh La La’,and if that dippy hippy discowasn’t to your taste, excellentUS indie stalwarts The Dandy

Warhols enticed many awayfrom the main stage. Afterwards these reviewerssuccumbed to the charms ofthe NYC Download tent, avoiding the Flaming Lips’headlining theatrics in favour ofsome disco music, falsemoustaches and tranny lip-syncing to camp classics. The perfect end to a great lost weekend.

LAST month markedthe 100th anniversaryof the death of one ofthe 19th century’s

most tireless peacecampaigners – long-servingHaggerston MP, Sir WilliamRandal Cremer.

Born in Hampshire in1828, he grew up in greatpoverty. While still a child,Cremer became a pitch-boyin the shipyards, working 12hours a day, Monday toSaturday, for a wage of justtwo shillings (10p) a week.

But he still had the energyto attend lectures wheneverhe could. One of these was atalk on solving internationaldisputes by peace ratherthan war, which became thegreat focus of Cremer’s life.

After training as acarpenter and moving toLondon in 1858, Cremerwas involved in thecampaign for a nine-hourday for building tradeworkers. His employersacked him and threatenedto shoot Cremer if hefound him on thepremises.

As part of the dispute,70,000 men were locked outby their employers, withCremer travelling thecountry to give over 100speeches in their support.

He became involved intrade unionism andworkers’ rights, was afounder member of both theAmalgamated Society ofCarpenters and Joiners, andthe International WorkingMen’s Association. Cremerpromoted peace and welfarethrough radical politics, butalways opposed outrightrevolution.

From 1868 onwards, heattempted to gain a footholdin Parliament, but it wasn’tuntil 1885 that he waselected MP for Haggerston. He was re-elected thefollowing year and again in1892, but narrowly defeatedin 1895.

Cremer did not desert hisShoreditch constituentshowever, and returned torecover the seat in 1900,retaining it until hisdeath.

His great achievementwas the assembly of theInter-Parliamentary Unionat the House of Lords in1906, with 22 countriespledging to settle theirdisputes through arbitrationrather than war. Manypraised Cremer’s work toadvance the cause of peace, but, sadly, only eight yearspassed before the outbreakof the First World War.

Cremer worked to the endof his life. He became illafter taking his daily bath atthe House of Commons andgoing onto a balcony in badweather. Pneumonia set inand although Cremerremained in high spirits, hewas unable to regain hisstrength and died, aged 80,on 11 July, 1908.

His services to, andinfluence on, internationalpolitics were widelyrecognised. Hereceivedthe

Norwegian order of St Olafin 1904, a knighthood in1907 and – most prestigiousof all – the Nobel PeacePrize in 1903.

Busts of Cremer aredisplayed in both the Houseof Commons and the PeacePalace in The Hague.

He is not forgotten inHackney either, where he iscommemorated in thenames of Cremer Streetand Randal CremerPrimary School in Ormsby

Street, E2.
