JUNE—OCTOBER 2012 EDITORIAL 5 THE HERALD
“Student Council is indeed a good way to show students how to be a good leader, a good listener and a good role model”. These are the words from our former SSG adviser who never gets tired of reminding us as student leaders in our school. In other words, she would like to remind all student leaders to be responsible and sincere in whatever task that they will make. Being a student leader makes us responsible. It gives us something posi-tive to do and at the same
time, builds self-confidence. Most students don’t have chance to be a student leader but every-one deserves that oppor-tunity.
Being a student leader gives a lot of posi-tive things. At an early age, we are exposed to positive and negative things that will help us on how to deal with it. It makes us a better person as we make decisions on our own. Being a student leader enhances also our critical thinking skills for most of the time,
they are the ones who are involved in solving prob-lems. Having these skills boost our self-esteem. Research shows that in a school setting, students who are student leaders are more confident compared to ordinary students. They try to play a big part for the school as they are considered to be the representatives and voices of the students. They seek advice from teachers in whatever problems they encounter. As a result, they become mature and responsible in whatever tasks they do.
The nature of student councils may vary in each school. However, the character of being the voice of the youth makes the student leader to be more responsible and bet-ter in serving their fellow schoolmates. They play as a center of learning for most of the time, they are considered to be the role models in which it plays a big contribution for the school

Dear concerned new student,
Actually, the water came from ground water but since the school is located near the sea, the water is contaminated with salt water that’s why it’s salty. If you can, just bring your own water for brushing your teeth.

What is IFTAR?
Perhaps most of the Filipinos in the country are strange with this term,
but to those who are connected with Turkish nationals they are surely familiar
with this term which is annually observed during the holy month of Ramadan.
Iftar is the meal which is eaten after sunset, the fasting which occurs dur-
ing the month of Ramadan in Muslim tradition. Since people have not eaten at all
during the day, they are often quite starving by the time Iftar comes around, and
most people hasten to end the fast as quickly as possible after sunset. In communi-
ties with a large Muslim population, a cannon may be fired or other signal given to
indicate the end of the day's fast, and the information may be broadcast over the
media as well.
For some people, this is considered as one of the most special moments
since they all gather and eat together in one table and share some religious stories
and experiences.
It is common for people to eat Iftar in large groups, making the fast break-
ing into a community party, and Muslims often try to include charity in their Iftar
meal as well, feeding needy members of the community while they celebrate the
end of the day's fast.
TEN STUDY HABITS OF
SUCCESSFUL PUPILS
1. Try not to do too much studying at one time. If you try to do too much studying at one time, you will tire and your studying will not be very effective.
2. Plan specific times for studying. Schedule specific times throughout the week for your study time.
3. Try to study at the same time each day. When a scheduled study time comes up during the day, you will be mentally prepared to begin studying.
4. Set specific goals for your study times. Goals will help you stay focused and monitor your progress.
5. Start studying when planned. If you procrastinate for any reason, you will find it difficult to get everything done when you need to.
6. Work on the assignment you find most difficult first. Start with your most difficult assignment since this is when you have the most mental energy.
7. Review your notes before beginning an assignment. Reviewing your notes can help you make sure you are doing an assignment correctly.
8. Tell your friends not to call/text you during your study times. Turn off your phone.
9. Call another student when you have difficulty with an assignment. This is a case where "two heads may be better than one."
10. Review you schoolwork over the weekend. This will help you be ready to go on Monday morning when another school week begins.

As if you want to doom your life
Only thought of pessimistic things
Sufferings, miseries, catastrophes and dwellings.
Lost your hope, lost your way.
Felt the storm, washed away by rain.
Flood of tears kept shedding on your cheeks,
Even curse God for giving you life like this
By distance, you saw familiar faces
It's them, the what you called- best friends
Smiled, Laughed and forgot away the sadness
Now, optimistic things rushed through your brain.
"Thank you God, I should've doubted you", he said.
The lost hope faded only brought sunshine.

Science Month Celebra t ion, A Success
Science month is always observed in every school on the month of September. To celebrate it, the Filipino-Turkish Tolerance Elementary School had prepared amusing and in-formative activities for the students with the theme “Be Dazzled by the Magic of Science and Mathematics.”
The first activity was the trivia. It started on September 3. Science teachers gave trivia questions. This was done every morning during the formation time. Grade 6 students won first place for the higher level and Grade 3 students for the lower level.
There was also Poster Making Contest; this was conducted last September 15. First placer for the higher level was Adawiya Mansul and for the lower level was Roxanne Panisales.

Soccer is a very popular sport. It’s also very popular in FTTS. Students both in elementary and high school are addicted
to this game. Why should we play soccer? Here are seven rea-
sons to play this sport.
First, it’s a good exercise for the body. Soccer is in con-stant motion except when the ball goes out of bounds. This will
build up your endurance. With all the running, it is a good cardi-
ovascular work-out. Leg strength is also developed from both
running and kicking the ball.
Second, it promotes teamwork as it is a team sport. As
with other sports, soccer will help develop you into more of a
team player. Team playing on the field may extend off the field
into other work, such as a classroom. Also soccer can be reward-
ing to be able to say that you were part of a group that reached
an accomplishment together.
Why Play Soccer?
Third, it develops your concentration. When
playing on the field, you have to be able to be constantly
alert of what is going on. Being aware of where the ball
is on the field, as well as where your players are on the
field will help your concentration off the field.
Fourth, it’s a stress-reliever. Kicking the ball
around can be a form of therapy. It will take your mind
off things while you are concentrating.
Fifth, it’s a form of communication. Soccer isn’t all about running around the field kicking the ball. Soccer relies a lot on communication.
Lastly, soccer is fun! Soccer is a good sport to
gather your friends and just have some fun. It can also be
a good challenge for people. What other sport relies
entirely on your feet to win?
