Presidents le,er to the Oklahoma Lion Pin Traders

Hello to my fellow pin traders, spring is almost here. Mother nature has started giving some

really nice days only to come back with a cold day to help us appreciate the warm days

more. I hope you all have had a great winter and now pin swaps are ge1ng in full gear. I

thought in this le,er I would talk about a,ending the recent Southeast Swap in February.

This year it returned to Nashville a2er the last two years of being held in Mississippi. It was

fun to return to Nashville and this year was even more special as we had the event in Gay-

lord’s Opryland Hotel and Conven5on Center. In the past the event had been held in a hotel

next to the Opryland site but due to last year’s flooding in Nashville that facility was not

completely back up and running. Carolyn and I drove around the area the first day we got

there to just get an idea of the amount of flooding and damage done, Carolyn was a li,le upset that the very nice mall

that is next to Opryland had not reopened. The Bass Pro Shop had reopened but the mall is s5ll a ques5on mark, ap-

parently their insurance was not sufficient to make all the needed repairs due to the flood waters. Probably saved me

some $$ by them being closed!

Gaylord’s Opryland Hotel and Conven5on Center was an adventure in itself. We had not ever gone over there when

we had gone to Nashville Swaps in the past, it is an amazing facility. There are several hotel buildings all connected

with a glass roof and walkways and gardens all in between. There were really big atriums with lots of flowers and

plants with several large waterfalls all inside the structure. Someone said that there are 40 some employees just to

maintain the plants. There were several places to eat and some shopping inside the facility as well as several bars for

entertainment. They even had a canal with boat rides like our OKC downtown area has. It was an amazing place to

stay!!

Add to that a pin swap with a lot of pin traders, they even filled the large hall and had some traders set up out in the

hallway. I know it took me all the 2 days to make all the tables to find the pins I was looking for. I must have done fair-

ly well as I s5ll have not go,en the two large plas5c bags I filled up gone through yet. I think everyone that went had a

great 5me, I know Lions Bill and Yolanda said they had a great 5me and Bill was all smiles with the pins he had found.

Since we have started looking for the membership award pins and president pins I even saw some long 5me pin collec-

tors with a new excited expression on their faces as they had a new adventure finding these pins. It is amazing how

a2er someone puts together a new set everyone starts trying to find them. The new sets are the President Pins and

the Membership Award pins. Don’t anyone tell PCC Charles Michaels but I even found a few more Elvis pins for his set.

I really hope that all the Oklahoma Lions will a,end the upcoming State Conven5on and our Pin Swap held in conjunc-

5on with it. Also, consider a,ending the Branson Swap as it is the next closest swap for us and is a great place to visit.

I got a call on Friday night the 11th of March from my friend PDG Larry Anderson. Well to make a long story shorter, I

am going with him to the York, PA swap. York is one of those swaps I have heard about for years and is one of the larg-

est and best established swaps in the country. I am mee5ng up with him in Salina, KS on Monday the 21st and drive the

20 plus hours to Pennsylvania. We plan to get there by Wednesday a2ernoon and trade Thursday and Friday with auc-

5ons on both nights. I am really excited to be able to go as I probably would not be able to do it if Larry had not called.

Just reinforces what I have said before about the friendships you form with pin traders all over the country as you pin

trade and build new friendships in Lionism. Hope to have a great report to bring to you in the next newsle,er about

a,ending this event . Don’t forget to renew your membership by July 01, 2011!

Sincerely, Kent Clovis PCC
