SBYC Alaska Cruise in 2013

A group of First Mates recently discussed cruising to Alaska next summer. As much as some of us would

enjoy taking her own boat, it was decided cruising together aboard one hull, at the start of next year’s

season, makes the most sense. Professional travel guides Don and Carolyn Bloye researched options and

have 2 options for us:

(Quotes are current and may go either up or down if other specials are announced. More categories are available; fares can be quoted on a first-come basis.)

BIG BOAT: The elegant and friendly Holland America “Volendam” (1432 guests) has a 7 day May 22nd

round-trip sailing departing Seattle and visiting Tracy Arm with stops at Juneau, Skagway & Ketchikan.

It sails the Inside Passage both ways, waters many of us know and love. Base prices start at $1232 p/p,

including taxes and fees. A verandah stateroom on this sailing would be $2282 p/p.

SMALL BOAT: Oceana “Regatta” (684 guests) offers an 11 day cruise, starting in Vancouver, B.C. on May

25th and returning to Seattle on June 4th. This itinerary includes stops at Sitka, Hubbard Glacier, Juneau,

Skagway, Icy Strait, Ketchikan and Victoria, B.C, journeying up the Inside Passage and returning down the

outside of Vancouver Island. Stateroom fares start at $2199 p/p with verandahs starting at $3399 p/p.

We would like to learn - ASAP - if you would be interested in participating and on which boat you’d prefer to cruise. Please contact Vanessa at 941-4141 ([email protected]) or Don Bloye ([email protected])

SOON!

Our afternoon crew got right to work after the Flag Ceremony. Raffle ticket sellers Rich & Barb Stockwell,

Claus & Turid Dassel and WC & Lora Harvey did a great job making sure we all had “winning” tickets.

Linda Barrett organized a tent filled with silent auction and raffle item treasures for our shopping pleasure. Those with artistic skills designed creative beach-themed centerpieces for our dinner tables. This was all

very thirsty work; thank goodness for the efforts of our refreshment staff: Bob & Mike Ellis, Whit & Judy

Hansen, Dale Friedig, Darlene Dailey, Skip Gates & Mindy McCabe. Their cheerful efforts kept us

“hydrated” all afternoon long.

Opening day of boating season requires boats, doesn’t it?! Thanks to chief dinghy wrangler Chris Dailey, several skippers launched their decorated

craft for our entertainment: Ted Taylor (Patriotic Rower), Pat McGarry

(colorful burgees), Larry Lein (Yellow Submarine), Chris Dailey (Sucia

pancake chef), Rob Hays & Greg Finch (Crab Man & Super Sushi)

contributed to our enjoyment of the day. I hope you were inspired to

participate in next year’s event - silliness is encouraged!

A delicious BBQ sockeye dinner rounded out our day. Most

grateful thanks to our skillful grillmasters: Dean Anderson, George Harris, Brian Boyd, Ron McFarlane, Jack Gubrud,

Joe Pickett, Jim Greer & Tim Vogel. While the men were

busy at the BBQs, the clubhouse kitchen was kept bustling

with the efforts of Dee Ihrig, Vickie Napier, Marnie Lee,

Randi Freidig, Donna Smith, Jackie McKean, Judy Anderson, and Jan Longstreth who prepared and served the

rest of our delicious meal.

Linda, Betty, & Larry: Thank you for the great job of

planning, preparing, setting-up, cleaning-up and convincing

so many members to get involved to help make Opening Day fun for all.

Summer finally feels like it is just around the corner, and that means, among other warm-weather related activities, Friday night barbecues at the Pavilion. A great big thank you to

Jerry and Jane Wilson for again stepping forward to host these activities. These informal

potluck gatherings are held monthly on the last Friday of the month, June through August:

June 29 July 27 August 31

Bring whatever meat you would like to grill for yourselves, as well as a side dish, salad, or

dessert to serve 8. You will also need to bring your own table service and beverage of choice. Sodas will be provided by the club. These fun evenings begin with a Happy Hour at

5:30 PM with hot coals ready for grilling at 6 PM.

Your Flag Officers are already in the process of planning for 2013. If you are looking for a fun way to

meet new people and give something back to your club, please consider hosting one of our six Clubhouse

Dinners.

Call myself or any of the Flag Officers if you would like to be involved. Remember, you are what make this yacht club great!

Opening Day

Because of the donations made by our members, our Opening Day Auction & Raffle

brought in over $3,800. This money will be used to partially fund our dinners, summer

BBQs and cruises throughout the year, keeping our annual membership dues lower than any other yacht club in the area. Thank you very much for your generous support!

We also want to thank Cap Sante Marine, Elston Marine, La Conner Maritime, Latitude Marine Services,

Marine Detail Specialists, Maroney Marine Service and North Deisel Harbor & Yacht Services for their generous marine services gift certificates. We also thank Pelindaba Lavender and Skagit River Traders

Men’s Shop for their donations and finally, John Holtman for his Photography on Canvas, “Final Cruise”.

Spaghetti dinner provided by port hosts.

Crabbing will be open so bring your traps, bait and license.

Is there a difference between a shore boat and dinghy to go crabbing or fishing?

A shore boat is defined as “a boat plying from shore to ship”. In the State of Washington a

shore boat can carry the WN numbers of the master vessel with a dash one or two, etc.,

and is not required to be registered as a separate vessel. Vary your route to or from shore to set or pull your

crab pot and you are no longer a “shore boat” if it is a powered vessel.

A powered dinghy used for duties beyond plying from shore to ship can and should be registered with

their own WN numbers. The fee is quite low and allow for many uses beyond just a “shore boat”. With

crab season coming, it might be a good, inexpensive investment to avoid a possible costly fine.

Training—Ron Kostanich

Our last two events of the Spring took place on

May 19th and 21st. On the 19th Everett Power

Squadron again did a bang up job of safety certifying

27 vessels of our fleet.

On the 21st Captain Tom Zimmerman from Dunlap

Towing shared wisdom, tips and a few jokes on

crabbing in the waters of our greater community.

Hopefully those that attended picked up a tip or

two that will help yield more crab on the table this

summer.

Chris Dailey ended the evening overviewing new

features of our Reciprocal Program on the SBYC web

site. Chris did his normal professional job. What a

great job he has done to make our lives’ easy when looking for a reciprocal moorage and with those new

features like google map to check out the yacht club

location and facilities – really cool. Thanks, Chris.

Notice the dates below for future training/seminars:

Fall Series starts in October.

Thanks for those who have contributed to the past

winter/spring season, either in making presentations

or by suggesting them. I continue to encourage your

input for classes for this coming fall/winter and we

would like to know if you would be interested in

presenting a class. Call or email me your thoughts and ideas for training in the Fall/Winter at 466-1331

or [email protected].

Carrot, Egg, Coffee Bean

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life

and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she

was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of

fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a

new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with

water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed

eggs and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit

and boil without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she

turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed

them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a

bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what do you see?"

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied. She brought her closer

and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they got

soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling

off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked

her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich

aroma. The daughter then asked. "What's the point, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the

same adversity--boiling water--but each reacted differently. The

carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However after being

subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The

egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid

interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside

became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique,

however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed

the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity

knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an

egg, or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity,

do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with

the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a

financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened

and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I

bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot

water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the

water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like

the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and

change the situation around you. When the hours are the darkest

and trials are their greatest do you elevate to another level?

How do you handle Adversity?

ARE YOU A CARROT, AN EGG, OR A COFFEE BEAN?

Don't tell GOD how big your storm is. Tell the storm how big your GOD is!
