Olmsted Falls School District July / August 2007 www.ofcs.k12.oh.us INNOVATIVE SUMMER SCHOOL COURSES KEEP STUDENTS ENGAGED AND PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP IMPROVE SKILLS More than 400 students in grades K-8 participated in classes at Falls-Lenox, Fitch and Olmsted Falls Middle School this summer. Each building’s summer school program had its own theme. At Falls-Lenox, “Have A Ball With Summer Magic” was a hit with K-3 students. “Join the Winning Team with Summer Discovery” was the theme at Fitch, while “The Crowd Goes Wild for Summer Adventure” was the name of the game at Olmsted Falls Middle School. Class offerings ranged from elective classes such as art, cooking, health, science, music and drama, to more academic courses including reading/writing and math. More than 25% of students enrolled in summer school participated in more than one class. This year, for the academic course offerings, the District conducted targeted outreach to encourage participation by students who would benefit most. “The summer months are an ideal time for us to provide some extra assistance to those students who may be struggling with basic skills,” said Director of Curriculum, Carol Rami. “We were pleased to be able to target and enroll children into this summer’s program who might not have attended otherwise.” IN THIS ISSUE: Bus Information School Fees Orientation Times and Dates Falls-Lenox Traffic Pattern 07-08 Lunch Pricing • Road Construction Report • District Contact Information • Free Tech Classes for Senior Citizens Pictured at right: Olmsted community resident and “Art Antics” teacher Amy Hrouda poses with students at the art show held at the end of the popular summer school session. ROAD CONSTRUCTION REPORTResidents of the Olmsted communities are currently navigating a number of road construction projects in the area. When the school year starts on August 22nd, Olmsted Falls School District busses will be faced with interruptions to their normal routes as well. The District’s Transportation Department has been working throughout the summer to adjust bus routes accordingly in order to ensure the most efficient transportation of students to and from school each day. In many cases, parents will notice altered pick-up and drop off times. In an effort to assist all residents in planning alternate routes during the multiple road construction projects, the Olmsted Falls School District’s Communications and Transportation Departments have compiled the information below as a resource for residents of the Olmsted communities. Information on individual road construction projects was obtained from the Cuyahoga County Engineer’s office and was accurate at the time of printing. Please note that information is subject to change.

SEARCH FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIESSchool districts across the State participate in an effort to identify, locate and evaluate all children from birth through 21 years of age who may have disabilities. Disability, in this instance, means such conditions as hearing or visual impairments, speech or language impairments, learning or behavioral disabilities, multiple disabilities, other health impairments, physical impairments, autism and traumatic brain injury.

A referral may be initiated by parents or agencies knowledgeable of the child’s needs. Upon receipt of a referral, Olmsted Falls City Schools will seek further information about the child using a variety of possible sources such as interviews, screening and testing to determine whether the child qualifies for special education services. All information will be held in strict confidence and released only with parental permission or as required by law. Please contact the Office of Pupil Services at 427-6530 for more information or assistance.

GIFTED IDENTIFICATION NOTICEThe Olmsted Falls City Schools gifted identification plan identifies students in the areas of superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creative thinking ability, and visual and/or performing arts ability. The identification process consists of three phases: pre-assessment, assessment for screening and assessment for identification.

Specific criteria for identification are used for each area. A teacher or parent may refer children for identification by completing and submitting the application form, available at each building, during the first week in September or the first week in March. Complete information may be obtained by contacting your child’s building principal or the Office of Pupil Services at 427-6530.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION NOTICEChildren must be five years old by August 1st to enroll for Kindergarten classes in Olmsted Falls School District. The District is frequently contacted with questions regarding early entrance of children into Kindergarten. According to Administrative Code, if a child does not turn age 5 by the District cut-off date (August 1st) but turns 5 by January 1st, the parent may request that the child be tested for possible placement in Kindergarten. Children who do not meet the mandatory cut-off date (August 1st) cannot be admitted into Kindergarten unless they meet the criteria for early admission pursuant with the District’s adopted Acceleration Policy for Advanced Learners. The standards, which have been established by the District for the purpose of early admittance, emphasize skills and characteristics which correlate with success in an academically oriented program. The evaluation is designed to identify those children who are functioning at a superior level in all developmental areas including intelligence, academic readiness, social/emotional maturity, verbal abilities and physical development. To discuss the appropriateness of early entrance for an individual child, please contact the Office of Pupil Services at 427-6530.

PAYMENT IN LIEU OF TRANSPORTATIONThose parents or guardians of students who reside in Olmsted Falls School District but attend a chartered Ohio non-public elementary or secondary school that we do not provide transportation to may be eligible for reimbursement for transportation. The school of attendance must be 30 minutes or less traveling time via school bus from the Olmsted Falls school that the student would normally attend. Travel time is calculated from portal-to-portal at the time the bus would normally transport a student to school in the morning.

If you feel that you may qualify for Payment in Lieu of Transportation, or know that you qualify from past years, please submit your reimbursement request in writing by Monday, October 1, 2007 to the Board of Education, Attn: Dale Weber, Treasurer, P.O. Box 38010, Olmsted Falls, Ohio, 44138.

FEDERAL FUNDS NOTICEFederal Funds are provided to school districts on an annual basis for specific programs. Though these Federal Funds amount to less than 1% of the total general fund, they are used judiciously to supplement District teaching and learning programs in areas such as reading, special education, drug awareness and professional development. If you wish to provide input or have comments or questions, please contact Office of Pupil Services at 427-6530.
