A Place for You from Sheila Rocker Heppe, OLLI Director
Welcome 2016! We are halfway through our 10th anniversary year and enjoying every minute!
In this catalog you’ll find a new batch of courses, including a diverse list of $10 courses offered as a 10th anniversary gift from the OLLI faculty (pages 28-29). We want to congratulate the 10 winners who renewed their membership before 10/10 (see facing page).
Join us for the spring Open House on Sat., Jan. 23 from 1-3 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatics Center in Eureka. The following week we will help kick off the new KEET series: “Conversations: Life in the Second Half,” with a panel discussion featuring the stars of the show (see page 27).
Last October, OLLI partnered with other local agencies to present the very successful “Women, Wealth & Wisdom” event with more than 140 attendees. Each of our six partners honored a woman who has made a difference for the organization through time, attention and resources. (See photo at bottom.)
Mark your calendars for the latest in the series of fun and inspiring shows designed and presented by Tracey Barnes Priestley and Carol Ryder. The “Boomer + Troupe: Those Fabulous Fifties” will play two shows at the Eureka Women’s Club on Fri., Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. Big smiles and toe tapping are guaranteed. (See page 37.)
There are some changes to our regular schedule. The OLLI Brown Bag Lunch Presentations have moved to Mondays at noon. We invite the community to
“start your week with OLLI.” Everyone is invited and all presentations are free. If you have a friend who is interested in learning more about OLLI, please bring them to a brown bag lunch! A full description of all presentations can be found on pages 54-55.
You will find we have changed the course index format (pages 8-10). The courses are listed chronologically instead of by the day of the week. Also, we have included some HSU Extended Education courses, which may be of special interest to OLLI members. Please register for the Extended Education courses by calling the OLLI office (826-5880).
Looking forward to seeing you in an OLLI class,

One of the top priorities of the HSU Strategic Plan Implementation for 2015-16 is strengthening partnership with local communities. OLLI is grateful to collaborate with many local businesses, non-profit and governmental organizations. We greatly appreciate the support of lifelong learning in our community.
Humboldt County LibraryThe Humboldt County Library provides resources and opportunities to support lifelong learning, local heritage, and the cultural, recreational, and information needs of our communities. This spring, OLLI at HSU will hold classes at both the Trinidad and McKinleyville branches of the Humboldt County Library.
KEET TV 13 KEET public television educates and enriches our communities by providing informative, entertaining programs and innovative outreach, creating public dialogue on local and global issues, and building vital community partnerships. Local KEET productions are created in partnership with community members to reflect a variety of topics, resources and reasons to celebrate the flavor, beauty and
innovation on the North Coast. Tune into KEET-TV for “Conversations: Life in the Second Half” with host Tracey Barnes Priestley. See page 27 for details.
Redwood Acres Redwood Acres is a thriving community resource within Humboldt County. Bustling with wholesome family fun, unique opportunities, events, and positive local growth, it remains firmly rooted to its founding mission and is extremely active in the “real-time” agriculture of today, whether it involves farming, livestock, fisheries, healthy land management, or as an ever valuable resource for agricultural education and classes of all types.
Redwood National & State Parks Home to the tallest trees on Earth, the parks also protect vast prairies, oak woodlands, wild riverways, and nearly 40 miles of pristine coastline, all supporting a rich mosaic of wildlife diversity and cultural traditions. Together, the National Park Service and California State Parks manage these lands for the inspiration, enjoyment, and education of all people. See page 19 for spring classes.

By looking at cartoons from the New Yorker magazine, 1925-2000, explore the deeper meanings and amusing ironies of social, cultural and political history. To get the hang of it, we will start with current cartoons – what do they tell us about today? We then skip back to the roaring twenties, the Depression, World War II, and so on, discovering the past as people experienced it in the present. In the process, we will examine the genre itself: What makes cartoons funny? What separates formulaic cartoons from truly original and insightful ones?

Writin
gFor Writers: The Fine Art of CritiqueWith Bonnie Shand
Writers need feedback, since writing is solitary work, and we are often too close to our creations to have a clear perspective on them.
Both poets and prose writers who have taken classes or with writing experience, will have an opportunity in this class to learn and practice the skills of giving constructive criticism, to benefit their own work and the work of fellow class members.
No matter who is giving or receiving the comments, it becomes a growth process for everyone in the group. You will discover that your own writing improves and will learn to distinguish between the feedback that rings true for you and how to let go of what doesn’t.
The instructor creates a safe space in which work will be shared, and asks that you bring a short, one-page piece of your writing to the first class.

Drawing has always been Brent Eviston’s passion, as well as his primary medium of expression. After studying environmental design, an architecture-based program at Otis College of Art and Design, he has continued to study many forms of drawing, including traditional master draftsmanship, architectural drafting and illustration, master figure drawing, and anatomical drawing. In 2012 he gave a talk at TEDx Eureka, arguing that observational drawing is as essential a skill as literacy and numeracy. Eviston has taught traditional and contemporary drawing through arts institutions and organizations throughout California.

’Twas brillig: Alice & the Wonderful World of Lewis CarrollWith Barry Evans
While rowing up the Thames near Oxford on the “golden afternoon” of July 4, 1862, Charles Dodgson made up a story to entertain Lorina, Edith and especially Alice Liddell.
Four years later – 150 years ago – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published under the pseudonym of “Lewis Carroll.”
Although best known for the Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass books, Dodgson was more than a writer of children’s fantasy stories. His 3,000 photographs (1,000 of which survive) are some of the finest of his time, while his contributions to geometry, matrix algebra and mathematical logic are still relevant today.
In this course, we’ll review both the real worlds of Dodgson and Alice and her family; and the frabjous realms created by “Lewis Carroll.”

art Buddha’s Brain:
The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love and WisdomWith Marilyn Montgomery
The Buddha and other great teachers were born with brains built essentially like anyone else’s – and then they changed their brains in ways that changed the world.
Science is now revealing how the flow of thoughts sculpts the brain. By combining breakthroughs in neuroscience with insights from thousands of years of contemplative practice, you too can use your mind to shape your brain for greater happiness, love and wisdom.
In this series of classes, based on neuropsychologist Rick Hanson’s book Buddha’s Brain, as well as other resources, you will learn practices and meditations to stimulate and strengthen your brain that create states of calm, compassion, happiness, and joy instead of worry, sorrow and anger.

Anam Cara: Spiritual Wisdom from the Celtic WorldWith Marilyn Montgomery
This course will be an introduction to the ancient teachings of Celtic wisdom based on the writings of John O’Donohue, poet, philosopher and Celtic mystic. In particular, the focus will be his book Anam Cara, which means ‘soul friend’ in Gaelic.
These classes will be an exploration of the profound insights that the Celtic world offers into the universal themes of friendship, solitude, beauty, longing and belonging, and the individual soul’s journey. The Celtic understanding did not set limitations of space or time on the soul. The soul in this tradition is seen as a divine light that flows into you and, in times of darkness, it is the soul that knows what to do.
Through talks, film, discussion, poetry and meditation, you will be introduced to the timeless wisdom of the Celtic world bringing a deeper understanding of yourselves and their relevance to the world around us today.
Day & Date: Thurs., Feb. 18, 25, March 3, 10Time: 2-4 p.m.Fee: OLLI Members $65Class #: 27888Location: Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center
Marilyn Montgomery was born and raised in the British Isles, of Irish and Scottish parentage. In 2005, while being in a meditation retreat in western Ireland for two months, she experienced a reawakening of her spiritual roots in the Celtic spiritual tradition which is part of her family lineage. She has been immersed in this wisdom since then, primarily through John O’Donohue’s teachings and writings.
The Yoga of Public SpeakingWith Yusef Hayes
Public speaking is for everyone! Dynamic conversation is not one-size-fits-all, and this course is tailored for individual styles. Quiet speakers can be just as impactful as loud speakers, and shy communicators can reach an audience just as successfully as outgoing communicators. The goal of this public speaking class is not to teach you to speak like famous speakers, but to teach you the best way to communicate as you are.
Public speaking can also be a powerful tool for human integration. Many have found that improving public speaking skills can bring more confidence and a greater sense of possibility into their lives.
This course combines the philosophy of modern yoga practice with the art of human communication.
Day & Date: Sat. & Sun., May 7 & 8Time: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.Fee: OLLI Members $55Class #: 27862Location: HSU Campus: Harry Griffith Hall 226
