The Inside Scoop from Sheila Rocker Heppe, OLLI Director

I fi nd myself surrounded by Wisdom as we launch 2015.

Last November OLLI at HSU celebrated Wisdom in the Spotlight, a show produced by Tracey Barnes Priestley, featuring ten members of our community and the wisdom they had to share. Abundant thanks to Scott Robbins, Diana Herberger, Bob Bloch, Maggie Kraft, Charmaine Mosher-Carbiener, Kate Ward Lehre, Cat Koshkin, Jan Ostrom, Barry Evans and Valerie Gillet Bourne. These wise individuals helped us to see the world in new and thoughtful ways. This benefi t for OLLI at HSU deeply enriched our souls.

The Wisdom of OLLI members was also shared at the Full Membership Meeting in August. Led by OLLI Leaders from the Curriculum Committee and the Finance and Fundraising Committee, the meeting included sharing ideas for future OLLI classes and celebrating our successful fundraising campaign. Thank you again to the over 200 people who contributed to help us exceed our $20,000 goal!

The OLLI at HSU Scholarship program is made possible in part by these generous gifts (see page 41 for more information). Also, our classrooms have new computers and projectors, and work continues on the installation

of a loop system in our classrooms to enhance sound through hearing devices equipped with T-coils.

I am deeply grateful to all Friends of OLLI. Current donors are listed on the facing page and the names of donors from prior years can be found on the OLLI website (www.humboldt.edu/olli/friends).

At the Full Membership Meeting, members made requests for new courses and we listened. In this catalog you will fi nd Wisdom shared on these suggested topics: evolution, exploring death and dying, current events, theater and opera, music appreciation, documentary photography and digital storytelling, iPad/smartphone, Photoshop, travel, backpacking in the Sierras, Native cultures, art appreciation.

Finally, join us for FREE brown bag lunch discussions each Wednesday at the Humboldt Bay Aquatics Center. Topics can be found on pages 8-9. These gatherings are highly informative and provide a lively place for exchange and to gather Wisdom.

LATE BREAKING NEWS! The night before we were sending this catalog to press, Humboldt State held a festive Holiday Party for all campus employees. The new HSU president Dr. Lisa Rossbacher addressed the crowd and talked about HSU’s work in the community. Then she read a letter she had received from the Osher Foundation. In that moment my colleagues and I learned OLLI at HSU has received a million dollar endowment. It was quite a wonderful surprise!

The money will be invested through the HSU Advancement Foundation account, and OLLI at HSU will receive 5% or $50,000 annually toward its base budget. This gift from the Osher Foundation will support OLLI at HSU now and into the future.

There are eight criteria which must be met in order for an Institute to be considered for this million dollar gift. I had the opportunity to speak with the Director at the Osher Foundation, and he commended us on our successful fundraising campaign; ongoing stellar curriculum refl ecting commitment to the community; YOU, our devoted and consistent members; strong campus involvement; and the exuberant spirit of OLLI at HSU – which is evident in all our work. The Osher Foundation feels certain OLLI at HSU has a bright future ahead.

Located on the Eureka waterfront, the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center (HBAC) is a multi-purpose facility providing recreation and education opportunities for the local community, HSU students and staff, and clientele beyond Humboldt County. The facility also hosts a full-scale aquatic equipment rental program, OLLI classes, and is home to the HSU women’s rowing team.

March 11: Louisa Rogers

Louisa grew up abroad and has lived in eight countries. She has enjoyed a range of careers, from ESL teacher to weight loss consultant, freelance writer to management trainer/ coach. Currently she maintains a part-time consulting and training business while still managing to live in Mexico part of the year, explore other countries, try different fitness pursuits, and write. Her articles on personal development and wellness have been published internationally.

April 8: Mary Gelinas, Ed.D. & Roger James, Ed.D.

Mary and Roger are the managing directors of Gelinas James, Inc., an organization development consulting and training firm in Arcata. They are also co-directors of the Cascadia Center for Leadership. They have served organizations and boards of directors in local and national business, government, education, and not-for-profit sectors. Mary and Roger have co-authored many books, articles, and papers in the areas of organization and leadership development, consulting, and change management. Jane Hill has served as executive director for a variety of performing arts organizations including the Sacramento Philharmonic, Opera Omaha and currently the Eureka Symphony. Hill was co-founder, master teacher of melodrama and development director for Dell’Arte International.

Fulbright ScholarsFulbright implements some of the world’s most prestigious and innovative scholarship programs, providing talent from around the world with access to leading institutions of higher education and international experience. These programs are critical to promoting mutual understanding, and developing global leaders. Three of Humboldt’s Fulbright Scholars will share about their studies, experiences and travel.

Feb 18: Tom GageProfessor Emeritus in English, Dr. Tom Gage served as Senior Fulbright Scholar in American Studies at the University of Aleppo in 1983-84. In the Faculty of Letters, he taught American Literature in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and a graduate class in Syntax.

April 15: JeDon EmenhiserProfessor Emenhiser received Fulbright professorships to the University of Saigon, Vietnam in 1964-65 and to the Université de Mons, Belgium, in 2004, where he was a visiting professor in the inter-university American Studies master’s program.

May 20: Tasha SouzaIn January 2014, Tasha Souza received the Fulbright Teaching grant award at UWI-Cave Hill in Barbados, where she teamed with the newly established Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). There, she facilitated workshops and supported and developed programs for faculty.

Paselk, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Humboldt State University, received his BS in biophysics from Cal State Los Angeles and his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Southern California. He has volunteered at the HSU Natural History Museum since 1996. He was appointed associate curator in recognition of his work. With his wife, Gail, he updated and refusbished the “Life Through Time” exhibit cases at the Museum.

The Brains of Leonardos: A Discussion of Leonard Shlain’s Posthumus Essay on da VinciThe class will discuss Leonard Shlain’s posthumous work Leonardo’s Brain: Understanding da Vinci’s Creative Genius. Dr. Leonard Shlain’s neurological generalizations provided insights into one of the world’s greatest minds.

Shlain was recognized as a pioneer in laparoscopic surgery. As a practitioner operating on scores of patients at San Francisco’s California Pacific Medical Center, Shlain derived hypotheses into the relationship between art and science, into how literacy influenced mythology, religion, and misogyny, and revealed how women introduced reason to human evolution. Each of these hypotheses resulted in several national best selling books. In his last book, Leonardo’s Brain: Understanding da Vinci’s Creative Genius, Shlain focused on a particular case from which generalizations of earlier essays explain how artists create and how scientists discover. We’ll start with the doves and move north all the way in Del Norte County, looking at locations both scenic and historic.

Learn about the first seat of Klamath County (Trinidad), the “Teddy Bear” fire of 1908 (Luffenholtz), and the fraud that preceded a president’s wife (Lady Bird Johnson).

Their existence ranges from prehistoric times to the present, and they populated lands through much of present-day Europe into Eastern Asia. Their influence remains significant and tangible, particularly among diverse populations in the British Isles and Ireland.

Explore the Celts’ rich and sophisticated cultural and artistic contributions, both in their historical context and ongoing expression through modern times. Despite centuries of warfare and the imposition of other languages, cultures and religious belief systems, many Celtic traditions not only survived, but experienced a resurgence through the 20th Century, which continues to the present day.

Richard Woods is a retired member of the HSU theatre arts staff and a former coordinator for the HSU Media Center. He is currently writing a historical novel set in 6th century Wales, has traveled extensively in that region, explored his own Welsh ancestry and continues to correspond with many people living in the western U.K.

Bernadette Cheyne was a professor of theatre at HSU for 24 years, specializing in acting, directing and vocal production. Dialect studies included a three-week journey through Scotland and Ireland to record and transcribe local dialects, as well as exploring local cultures and traditions. Her family tree includes a Scottish heritage that has been traced back to 16th Century whalers in Petershead.

We’ll compare the “twin” banks, designed by Humboldt’s premier architect; we’ll view a quartet of beautiful bridges by the master of reinforced concrete, John Buck Leonard; we’ll look at hotels and inns, saloons and stores, and all the other types of buildings that have defined the appearance of Humboldt County. Humboldt County Redwoods: From Trees to Logs to LumberHumboldt County made its reputation with its redwood products. We’ll trace the transformation of old-growth redwoods into first logs and then lumber as we look at old-time logging “shows” that levelled large tracts of forest; transported the resultant logs by water, trains, and trucks; and then cut them into lumber in picturesque but often primitive mills.

After the First Draft: Revision Strategies for WritersYou’ve banged out a first draft of an essay, or a story, or a memoir ... and while you’re reasonably happy with what’s emerging, you know there’s more work to do. But how? What do you do next? What’s involved in that murky step called “revision,” where you add and cut and tune up your lines to make your text a better experience for your readers?

In this one-session dunk-tank of a class, we’ll look at various revision strategies that will help you revisit your work, both at a global level and at the sentence level. We’ll borrow the wisdom of writers like Peter Elbow, Steve Almond, Joe Glazer, and Carol Bly, and in-class exercises will sharpen our eyes and our ears.

Memoir: Writing Your Life StoryThis course is designed to help you write your memoir. To that end, you will engage in the process of life review, reflection and assessment through drawing and writing exercises. Word association, memory clusters, questions and class discussion will help you remember and recall memories and sort and organize essential information.

The focus of this course is to discover and write about what matters most to you. It is an invitation to encourage you to explore your authentic self. Your story is a journey to wholeness and a treasured gift to loved ones.

Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos in 1836 while travelling with Robert Fitzroy on the voyage of the Beagle. During his five weeks in the Galapagos, Darwin observed many bird species endemic to particular islands, which were similar to those on other islands but differing in their adaptation to their local environment. What course is more reviled by college students than the introductory statistics course? Why are departments of statistics less common than other science departments at universities? Why do graduate students (not to mention, professors!) in many scientific disciplines confess insecurity, apprehension, and confusion about the statistical analyses in their research? Why do so many university departments attempt to teach their own statistics courses?

Brian Dennis, PhD, is a professor with a joint appointment in the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Sciences and the Dept. of Statistical Sciences at the University of Idaho. He has authored over 70 scientific articles on applications of statistics and mathematical modeling in ecology and natural resource management. Prof. Dennis is well known for his clear exposition of statistical methods.

The annual Lamberson Ecology Lecture is hosted by the College of National Resources at Humboldt State University. The lecture series takes its name and funding from Rollie Lamberson, Professor Emeritus of mathematics at HSU and OLLI instructor.

Discover a diversity of Digital Design Tools to create dynamic content for digital, social and print output. Klimt, Schiele, Freud & the Rise of Sexual Art in ViennaExplore the art of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele in relation to the birth of psychology with Sigmund Freud in Vienna.

Klimt wrote “all art is sexual,” and he and Schiele painted themselves through this lens as well as their lovers and friends. Myth, fashion, and decoration are also key to their innovative art.

This course will explore the rise of Jugendstil (art nouveau) to expressionism in Vienna in the art of Klimt and Schiele. Their self-exploration will be examined through Freud’s emphasis on sex, myth, dream, and the unconscious. With Ron Johnson.

This class will offer an opportunity for writers and visual artists to come together in a safe environment to express and share creative work about what ignites your imagination.

Writers of all skill levels who have taken at least one writing class are welcome, and artists are asked to have experience with one or more art mediums.

You will be free to use any form of expression you choose for your work: poetry, prose, paint, sculpture, collage, photography, textiles, mixed media.

FUN WITH GLASS ETCHINGGlass etching is a process of making permanent designs on glass, using either an abrasive or a chemical. The design is made by masking some areas of the glass so it remains clear, and etching the exposed areas. We will explore ideas to create designs and various methods of creating the resist.

Botanical Drawing WorkshopBotanical drawing is a delightful and often profound way to connect with nature.

Brent Eviston studied environmental design at Otis College of Art and Design and has studied many forms of drawing including traditional master draftsmanship, architectural illustration, master figure drawing and anatomical drawing. He is a full-time artist and a sought-after drawing instructor. In 2012 he gave a talk at TEDx Eureka, arguing that drawing and visual literacy are as essential as language and mathematics. SPRING 2015Communication in Crisis: When the News is Bad – Terribly Bad – Everything ChangesWhen crises happen, the game can change in an instant; but the rules for effective communication remain the same. With abundant examples of successes and failures from Humboldt County and far beyond, we will explore how organizations prepare for crisis communications, how they inform the public and others in the midst of crisis, and how they recover afterwards.

For individuals and institutions, well-established reputations can be strengthened or destroyed by their performances during critical moments of emergencies or controversies.

For journalists, the pressures of accuracy and currency intensify. We’ll examine how journalists, leaders, spokespersons, law enforcement and other agencies, and the public all play a role in minimizing the negative effects and promoting recovery from crises.

We’ll also look at how these lessons may apply to crises in our private lives. With Sean Kearns.

This course will include a panel discussion with the three HSU vice presidents, Craig Wruck, Joyce Lopes and Peg Blake, who worked together to coordinate the campus response following the tragic bus crash on I-5 in April 2014.

After a stint as a news reporter, Sean Kearns worked for more than 20 years as a communications officer for HSU, Cal State L.A., and the National Science Foundation. He was trained in crisis communications by FEMA and California’s Specialized Training Institute, and he completed the Los Angeles Fire Dept. Community Emergency Response Training. As a public information officer and spokesperson, he has addressed major crimes, serious accidents, fires, earthquakes and oil spills – along with highly volatile conflicts and scandals heated up by politics, protests and litigation.

Native American Spirituality: Yurok & WiyotStarting from recent studies about the encounter between natives cultures and Christian settlers – notably in Alaska – the course will explore major themes of the religious and spiritual life of some of the major local tribes. Laurent Cleenewerck is the rector of the historic St. Innocent Orthodox Church in Eureka which is named after the famous Eastern Orthodox missionary to the native peoples of Alaska, who become a pioneer in native studies. He recently organized a conference and pilgrimage cruise to Alaska on the theme of the encounter between native American cultures and the Western world.

Spaghettis: The Last of the WesternsThe cult of the Western, which had been fading for some years, went out with a bang with the 1967 U.S. release of Italian director Sergio Leone’s “Spaghetti” trilogy: Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, followed two years later with Leone’s Western-to-end-all-Westerns, Once Upon a Time in the West.

Look at what made these iconoclastic movies so compelling (read: fun), including Leone’s use of extreme close-ups, minimalist dialogue, and the long drawn-out build-up to duels, and Ennio Morricone’s evocative music. With clips from these and other films of the genre, we’ll revisit the brief, golden era of the Spaghetti Western. With Barry Evans.

SPRING 2015 The Life & Films ofKatharine Hepburn Katharine Hepburn’s fi lm career spanned six decades, during which she was nominated for 12 Oscars, winning four of the coveted awards.

Kate Hepburn worked with most of Hollywood’s best directors, opposite the biggest actors in many genres, from comedy to drama, westerns to classic literary fi lms.

Off screen, Kate was outspoken, sometimes fl amboyant and certainly colorful.

Learn about her life and her fi lms. Films currently planned include: Morning Glory, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Woman of the Year, The African Queen, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and On Golden Pond.

Philip Wright has a BA in English and an MA in theatre arts with an emphasis in fi lm production from Humboldt State University. He has worked more than 30 years in local television production.

Matewan In 1920, a battle broke out in Matewan, West Virginia between coal miners and out-of-town company detectives. The “Matewan Masscre” resulted in about a dozen deaths, including seven detectives, three miners, and the town sheriff, who had come in on the side of the miners.

Award-winning independent fi lmmaker John Sayles captures the mounting tensions in the community leading up to the incident in his 1987 movie, Matewan. It stars Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones, Mary McDonnell, Will Oldham, David Strathairn, and Sayles himself. It runs 132 minutes.

The director of 18 fi lms, including Brother From Another Planet, Lone Star, Passion Fish, Eight Men Out, and The Secret of Roan Inish, John Sayles fi rst made a splash in 1980 with the low-budget movie, Return of the Secausus 7, which garnered two major critics awards.

Prior to the screening, there will be a 15-minute presentation providing the historical context, a synopsis of John Sayles’ career and other aspects of the movie. A discussion will follow. With Michael Cooley.

Kate Lang-Salazar has had a lifelong involvement with music. She holds an HSU interdisciplinary studies degree combining music, dance and cultural arts. Her focus on percussion began in 1995 as a member of the HSU Calypso Band and the HSU Percussion Ensemble. She co-founded Pan Tectonics Steel Band and Pan Dulce Steel Orchestra. Kate furthered her Pan studies when she traveled to Trinidad, West Indies.

African Song CircleCome sing beautiful, traditional folk songs from West and South Africa, in a variety of languages. SPRING 2015EUREKA SYMPHONY CONCERT SERIESAn evening class at Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center will explore and contrast the lives, times and works of composers featured in an upcoming Eureka Symphony concert. Course fee includes a ticket to the concert at the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts. With Linn Van Meter.

EUREKA SYMPHONY CONCERT - MARCH

Explore contemporary American composers Arturo Marquez and Malcolm Arnold, and how their backgrounds influenced their dance compositions to be performed by the Eureka Symphony. Examine the various dance forms on which these pieces are based. Finally, study the wonderful Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, by the great 19th century German composer Johannes Brahms. Investigate European culture at the time this work was written, and the concerto’s place in Brahms’ long life as a composer.

EUREKA SYMPHONY CONCERT - APRIL

Explore the works of contemporary composers Michael Kibbe and Robert Xavier Rodriguez. We will emphasize Kibbe’s Aztec Fantasy, but will survey other works by this prolific composer. Examine short story and the Academy Award- winning animated short film which inspired Rodriguez to create The Dot and the Line for narrator and orchestra. Finally, we will discuss the works to be performed by the winners of the Eureka Symphony’s Youth Competition.

Explore 19th Century German composers Martin Klughardt and Felix Mendelssohn. We will emphasize Klughardt’s beautiful Violin Concerto in D major, to be performed by the Eureka Symphony with concertmaster Terrie Baune as soloist. We will also concentrate on Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 in A major, known as the Italian Symphony.

Linn Van Meter is a violist in the Eureka Symphony. She holds a BA in music performance from CSU Fresno, and a masters in musicology from Western Michigan University. She has played professionally in many orchestras, including the Fresno Philharmonic, the Monterey County Symphony, the Kalamazoo Symphony, and the Reno Philharmonic. She is also an avid chamber musician.

OLLI AT THE OPERA: CAPULETIThe tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet inspired some of Shakespeare’s finest verse – and some of Bellini’s most beautiful melodies. Enjoy the film showing of Vincenzo Bellini’s magnificent Capuleti at the beautiful Cascade Theater in Redding.

Depart Arcata early Sunday morning for a pre-film opera class taught by Geoff Cain (lunch will be provided), followed by the film. On Monday, the class will have a few hours to explore Turtle Bay Discovery Park before heading back to the coast.

Sean McLaughlin has been the executive director of Access Humboldt since it was founded in 2006. Sean was previously the CEO of Akaku Community Television Center in Maui, Hawaii, and has been a member of the Honolulu Community-Media Council. He is involved with telecommunication issues and access media policy making at local, state and national levels. He has published many articles, provided expert testimony before legislative and regulatory agencies, and participated in international conferences on media issues.

SPRING 2015 Simple Video Production: How to Make a Three-Minute Video This course will take you through the steps necessary to make a simple video to address an issue, tell a story or pass on knowledge.

The course combines demonstrations and hands-on experience to teach you how to develop a story, create a story board, collect media assets (photos, video and music) and edit a video.

Participants will walk out with a fi nished video and knowledge of how to make a simple video on their own.

The course fee includes two-month access to camcorders and editing computers at Access Humboldt as well as a USB storage device for your video project. With Lilach Assayag and JoAnn Schuch.

Lilach Assayag has been working at Access Humboldt for fi ve years, developing curricula and teaching digital media production. She also performed as production manager for many in-house productions and produced a few short videos herself. Lilach is a graphic artist and has journalism background.

JoAnn Schuch has been a resident of Humboldt County since 1989, a custom woodworker, designer, and community activist. She recently produced her fi rst-time-ever documentary, which has been featured in a few fi lm festivals. JoAnn is involved with the Senior Action Coalition and is dedicated to improve senior issues in our community.

Restoration and Renewalat Redwood National and State Parks Since 1978, Redwood National and State Parks have been at the forefront of developing watershed restoration techniques.

In recent years the parks have begun forest restoration on park lands that were logged when those lands were still privately owned. A major new project being considered would treat approximately 8,000 acres of second-growth, with the objective of putting those acres on a trajectory to achieve old-growth characteristics in as short a period of time as possible.

Using watershed, forest, and fi sh passage restoration techniques, the goal of the Lower Prairie Creek Project will be to tie the two largest stands of old-growth redwood forest within RNSP back together by completing the restoration of second-growth that stands between them.

Join us for a dynamic afternoon lecture followed by an all-day fi eld trip to Redwood National Park.

This class includes a fi eld trip. All participants will be required to complete a release of liability form in advance of the trip. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for unpredictable weather, bring water and a lunch.

Jerry & Gisela Rohde are including a charitable bequest for OLLI at HSU in their estate plan.

Part of the original OLLI faculty, Jerry and Gisela love teaching every semester and have a special passion for Humboldt County’s human and natural history. Some of their favorite OLLI memories were made on their van tours of nearby state and national parks. The van tours provide special guided access to OLLI students, many of whom would be unable to hike far enough to see certain points of interest. Students are often delighted to experience beautiful historic places that would be out of their reach without OLLI at HSU.

OLLI at HSU provides a unique outlet for the curious minds in Humboldt’s 50 and better community. Jerry and Gisela appreciate the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with engaged students. And they love how often students add their own knowledge of Humboldt’s history to make their classes even more interesting!

When they realized they could include OLLI at HSU in their estate plan, it was like a light bulb turning on. Because the program has provided Jerry and Gisela so much joy over the years, they knew immediately that they wanted to support the future of the program. Their goal is to make OLLI at HSU affordable for anyone who’s interested in taking classes about local natural and human history. To help do so, they are bequeathing 10% of their estate to OLLI.

By providing learning opportunities at an affordable cost, OLLI at HSU has become a core activity for many in the Humboldt community. TATTERED PAGES: BOOK ARTS GROUP: Explore the exciting world of creative book binding, altering existing books, decorating pages and much more. The meetings feature show-and-tell; demonstrations; techniques and tips; problem solving; discussions about materials and resources and lots of fun! Meets 10 a.m.-1 p.m., second Thurs. of each month. DIPS GENEALOGY GROUP: The DIPS are seniors Digging Into the Past. They help one another fi nd people, history, connections and stories. Meets 10 a.m.-noon, fi rst/third Thurs. of each month. Group leader: Byrd Lochtie. ($20, 27761; $50/year, 27768)

FRIENDS OF JUNG: More than a monthly philosophical discussion or theoretical discourse, it’s a deeper conversation. Topics have included movies about Jung, Jungian books, dreamwork, archetypal presentations and art processes. This is a peer-led group, so anyone can suggest a topic, and everyone with an interest or curiosity about things Jungian is welcome. Meets 10 a.m.-noon, fi rst Tues. of each month. THE SOUL COLLAGE® GROUP: This group brings collage materials and then uses Seena Frost’s process for discussing the collages created that morning. WRITING GROUP: This group is an offshoot of the OLLI course “Writing as a Spiritual Journey.” Meets 1-3 p.m. every other Tues. Group leader: Claire Josefi ne. ($20, 27764; 50/year, 27771)

WRITING CRITIQUE: This group is for writers who want to comment upon and receive others’ comments on their writing projects, in hopes of becoming more consistently productive and improving the fi nal product. BRIDGE PLAYING GROUP: Play bridge with other OLLI bridge players. A fun and easy place to play contract bridge and meet more bridge players. All levels welcome; you don’t need to bring a partner.
