Lately our entire office has been jamming to a local artist whose CD has been on repeat since we got our hands on it. Naser Mestarihi is definitely one talented young up and coming rocker that is making waves in the music scene this side of the globe. We got a one on one with the busy artist and got chatting about everything from guitar

fingers to his missus.

Looking to soak in some culture, maybe check out the hottest exhibition in town or take in a lecture with your favourite visiting professor? We sat down with the people at Evently, the city’s hottest new event app, to find out how to stay in touch with the coolest happenings around town; you won’t miss out on a thing if these guys

have anything to say about it!

As much as we love our car reviews we sometimes look beyond growling engines for our adrenaline rush, so this month we went in search for a daredevil to give us that much needed kick. We found what we were looking for with Kamel Zarandah, a 21-year-old skater whose killer moves with a board have us excited and on a

riveting high; we’re suckers for a good stunt!

Our man with the master-cooking plan, Badir Bechara, returns with another chapter of Cucina de Badir, which sees him get his hands dirty in the kitchen this time at steak-lovers hotspot Prime. We’ve also put together a roundup for you busy folks out there with the hottest meal deals in town with our Business Lunch roundup to

save you time and keep you well fueled throughout the day!

& Drive event took place at the Inland Sea last month, and these are some of the fantastic images from the event…

alfardan Premier Motors, the Jaguar Land Rover dealership in Qatar, hosted the annual event with a day of daring drives,

advanced desert driving tips from experts and family entertainment for customers, prospects, friends and families at Khor Al Udaid – the Inland Sea.

Participants received training on how to safely navigate Qatar’s deserts and seashores before putting the full range of Land Rover’s high-performing 4x4 vehicles through their paces with off-road experts across the stunning sand dunes of one of Qatar’s most famous sites of natural beauty.

“This annual event is an excellent opportunity to thank all our long-standing customers for their loyalty by treating them to a fun, family day out in one of the most beautiful spots in Qatar,” said Hussein Adra, Marketing and CRM Manager of Alfardan Premier Motors.

“It gave our most valued clients and fans the chance to enjoy some extreme driving in stunning surroundings and to experience first-hand how their Land Rover 4x4s can perform, as well as to learn from the experts.”

Porsche have gone to great lengths to present the Macan as ‘a grown up 911’ rather than a ‘baby Cayenne’. So, how successful have they been in the delivery? O’Lifestyle heads off to scenic Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE to find out…

From the outside, there’s no mistaking where the Macan gets its DNA from, however Porsche try to present it. From a distance, many would

mistake it for the Cayenne, and even up close they’re very similar. While the Macan is visibly smaller when the two are parked next to each other, the main tell is the one-piece ‘clam shell’ bonnet the Macan features. Interestingly, this is the biggest single piece of aluminium ever used in a car’s bodywork, according to Porsche.

The interior of the Macan is superb. Comfortable and cosy, it almost feels tailor made to the driver, with a figure-hugging sports seat holding you in place for fast cornering, and controls that are all literally at your fingertips. It features the same large, raised centre console as the Cayenne and Panamera that makes you feel like you’re sitting in the cockpit of a jet, with all the Sport, Sport Plus and suspension settings conveniently featured.

The Macan is currently being offered in just two specifications, the Macan S, with a 340hp 3.0l V6 biturbo engine, and the Macan Turbo, with a 400hp 3.6l V6 biturbo. Both feature a permanent all-wheel-drive system, and Porsche’s superb and lightning-quick PDK double-clutch transmission comes standard on all models,

the all-new porsChe MaCan

Page 29: O'lifestyle mayissue low res

29O’LIFESTYLE

which is something the Cayenne has never featured thus far.

To demonstrate the Macan’s abilities, Porsche flew us out to the stunning Fairmont Ras al Khaimah for two separate experiences. The first was a purpose built off-road course, including soft sand, axle-benders and steep inclines.

The off-road setting raises the Macan by a considerable 40mm, giving it decent ground clearance and approach and departure angles. The upshot of this is that, despite its diminutive size, the Macan can handle any low-to-medium difficulty off-road terrain with ease, but on the more rugged stuff you risk costly damage to your lovely Porsche bodywork and underside.

The second experience was a breathtaking drive up the road to Jebel Jais, the UAE’s tallest

mountain, which in our humble opinion pips Jebel Hafeet as the best driving road in the Gulf, and one of the best in the world. Why haven’t you heard of this road, you ask? Because it’s not actually finished – construction hasn’t reached the summit yet, so the road’s not officially open, but trust us, it’ll be famous soon enough!

The Macan S and Turbo boast almost identical driving characteristics, especially with the Sports Chrono package as featured on the demo models we reviewed, though obviously the Turbo has noticeably more ‘oomph’ on acceleration.

As with any Porsche, the Cayenne and Panamera included, a fanatical level of attention has been to the driving experience of the Macan, and it shows. Whilst the Cayenne demonstrated almost supernatural levels of

handling and performance for an SUV (the key words being ‘for an SUV’), the Macan demonstrates comparable handling and performance to the Panamera and even the 911, thanks to the Porsche Active Suspension Management and Torque Vectoring.

We know this is a bold statement, but in our opinion, the Macan is, without a doubt, the sportiest premium compact SUV in the world, by a long shot. Nothing else – not the BMW X3, not the Audi Q3, nor the Mercedes GLK – even comes close.

A large reason for this is that, whereas its premium German rivals are something of a compromise (i.e. less costly versions of their larger brethren), Porsche have not compromised with the Macan at all. It’s not a cheaper version of the Cayenne, simply a smaller, sportier version.

IT’S BECOME A COMMON trait in Doha to find out about an event after when it’s happened. You wake up in the morning and pick up a newspaper and bam right there in front of you is an article about an awesome art lecture that took place last night that you would have killed to attend. Or you bump into your neighbour on the way out and they’re bragging about this outrageous drum circle they went to in the souq on the weekend that you know you and your friends would have had a blast at.

It’s sad to say but finding out about an event here in Doha, whether it being an exhibition, lecture or concert, is a hard and almost pointless task. You’re lucky to hear about something going on from twitter than seeing a poster

Tell us about yourself?I’m originally from Palestine, but have never really been there, so Doha is home to me. Living here can get a little frustrating sometimes but I’m glad I found my thing. That’s why I have been working extra hard trying to get skateboarding the attention it deserves here in Doha, especially with the amazing potential this country has and their desire to be the sports capital of the Arab world. Lately I have been in contact with Quiksilver and DC Qatar so I am very excited about where that is going to take my skateboarding.

Why do you love the sport? And how long have you been doing it?I started skateboarding when I was 13 years old; at the time I had no idea how much of an impact it would have on who I am today. Skateboarding to me is more than just pushing a board and doing jumps, it has become a sort of lifestyle for me; I’ve learnt things that I don’t think I could have learnt in a lecture hall. It taught me the process of trial and error and the fact that you might not get something the first time or the second time but if you keep trying and don’t give up, that’s when you get it best.

the raMp ManThe street tricks are not easy, and falling is simply unavoidable, but to skaters like 21-year-old Kamel Zarandah, getting on his board has become a way of life. O’Lifestyle catches up with the

engineering student by day and skater by night as he lets us in on his passion for the adrenaline based sport.

Skateboarding doesn’t need a coch or a team, all it takes is commitment and that’s why skateboarders differ from one another. Everyone has their own style and everyone has their own way of doing things, and as a community we embrace that in one another. That is why the skateboarding folks here in Doha are some of the best guys I have ever met; always pushing you to do better and inspiring you to try something new. Where are the hottest spots to skate in Doha? The Katara skate park was great, but it’s closed now due to “financial issues”. I heard they are building

a football pitch where it used to be which is kind of sad – I mean don’t we have enough of those already?Right now I spend most of my time at Dahil Al Hamam Public Park, but the place which I hold dear has to be The Center; that’s where I spent 5 years of the 8 years developing my skating skills.

Who are your skateboarding idols? When I was 13 I bought the Tony Hawk game on PlayStation and fell in love. I was a fat kid who spent most of his time playing video games, and after playing that game I got up and begged my dad to buy me a skateboard.

Have you ever had any bad accidents while skateboarding?Well the thing people don’t get about skateboarding is that we don’t get injured as often as people may think. One of the first things you learn as a skateboarder is how to fall; surprisingly skateboarding isn’t even on the list of top 5 sports that get people injured. As for bad accidents I haven’t broken any bones yet thank God, but I have twisted my ankles and wrists a couple of times.

“I learnt things that I don’t think I could have learnt in a lecture hall.Skateboarding taught me the process of trial and error and the fact that you might not get

something the first time or the second time but if you

keep trying, and don’t give up, that’s when you get

it best! “

O’Lifestyle. O’for the Life of Music

DOHA HAS NEVER SEEN anything like him. Play his new album, 1987, and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were at a rock concert somewhere in London. His music and style scream rock band - complete with entourage, screaming fans and the all-important finale where drums are smashed all over the stage.

Qatari-born Jordanian Naser Mestarihi is not your typical musician, no. Spend five minutes talking to him about his music and you’ll see that he’s different than the rest; the way he talks about his passion shows someone who’s love for the trade goes far beyond stringing a few cords on a guitar.

“I used to watch Eddie van Halen and Randy Rose on youtube – Jimi Hendrix is the reason I picked up a guitar,” he tells us. Mestarihi taught himself how to play, bored of guitar theory classes his mum put him in, he dedicated his time to teaching himself using an online program developed by fellow music lovers like himself. “I believe in being self taught,” says the 27-year-old, “Music with instructors is rigid and constructed.

roCK oF ages

His first ever encounter with a guitar had run away in fear, to a point where he wet his bed and his dad had to lock the instrument away. Twenty years later, he

owns no less than seven of them and the purchase of two more are in the works. Naser Mestarihi is slowly building the way for a music scene in a country where

there isn’t one. He talks to O’Lifestyle about the trials and tribulations of being an up and coming musician in the Gulf…

It’s a richer experience when you learn by yourself.” Listening to his songs, it’s hard to believe he has never had a guitar or singing lesson in his life. The self-taught guitarist picked up his vocal talent through the shower, where funnily enough, he sings and

writes most of his lyrics. At the sweet age of seventeen, he started his first band, which saw him write his earliest serious songs, fusing blues with southern rock. Like most musicians, a conflict of interest amongst band members and Mestarihi’s cravings to experiment with different genres, saw the band break up. “It all happened thanks to Duran Duarn,” says Naser, “I was sitting in a car listening to them and it made me want to get back into what I grew up with; The Beatles, 80s music, it recharged me. I had fallen into a trend instead of doing what I love.” After getting his degree in Dubai in mechanical engineering out of the way, Naser did his own solo thing, releasing his first record in 2010, making his album the first rock release ever out of Qatar.

Acoustic gigs soon followed in Dubai and a new band in 2012 saw him kick off a performance at the region’s famous Yas Formula One. His second album came out last year in June 2013 selling out instantly at Virgin

Megastores, with a long wait list. “Walking into the store and seeing my album near Metallica was crazy. To see your name there is really unbelievable. With the music thing there are many challenges physically and emotionally, but when the CD comes out you go crazy. I couldn’t think for three days, it only sunk in after the launch. I was signing the albums for the press and editors and that’s when it hit me.” Mestarihi explains. “Lyrically inspiration comes from pretty much anything, whether it’s life experiences (travel, relationships, struggles, etc.) Sometimes it’s just a cathartic release when dealing with something difficult, it’s easy to write about it and connect with a listener that could relate to the problem you’re dealing with. But I also get inspired by history, politics, literature and even things that give an adrenaline rush like racing and fast cars. So inspiration comes from pretty much anywhere or anything. Something that evokes sadness, joy, fascination or even a rush.”

Though it was described as ‘docile pop rubbish’ by a music fan on twitter, Sheezus (yes, it’s a playful nod to Kanye West’s 2013 album ‘Yeezus’) is a 14-track CD packed full of the British songstress’ cheeky attitude and outspoken tone. The first single off the album, Hard Out Here, went

platinum in Australia and has already racked up 23 million views on YouTube (now, that says something… success!). If anything, Lily Allen has succeeded in being creative and outrageous with her music videos for the singles off Sheezus, if you haven’t seen the official vid for Our Time yet, stop what you’re doing and give it a watch now!

After making fans wait nearly three years for new material, the Midwest duo is back with their 11-track eighth studio album. Their first single Fever, with its psychedelic stomp and irresistible melody (thanks to producer Danger Mouse) sets us up for what will, undoubtedly, be another

strong record. Listen out for the simple keyboard melody on In Our Prime, and soft, acid country excursion of Bullet In The Brain, alongside the serious bass-line in 10-Lovers. It’s safe to say that after such a lengthy wait, fans of the Ohio rockers will, no doubt, love it!

The seventh and last book in Martha Long’s popular ‘Ma’ series of memoirs, “Ma, Jackser’s Dyin’ Alone” talks poignantly about Martha coming to terms with her abuser – Jackser, when she finds out that he’s on his deathbed. At first, she is thrilled to see her abuser suffer, but at the hospital, she is shocked to see a lonely, scared old man who seems to be repenting his past deeds. As she quietly keeps vigil, she is joined by her little brother, the ma and her other siblings. It is clear that everyone has suffered tremendously and no one has escaped unscathed at Jackser’s hands. Caught in a vicious cycle of cruelty and loss, Martha’s only means of escape is her obstinacy and wit. Although the book drags out a little, it is definitely an inspiring read!

The seventh installment of the Private series, Private L.A. sees the return of the renowned private investigator, Jack Morgan. Jack’s problems are piling high - his twin brother is charged with murder. A group called ‘No Prisoners’ are threatening to carry out massacres at random locations unless their demands are met, and he has to investigate the mysterious disappearance of the biggest Hollywood couple and their children, preventing news from leaking to the media (phew)! It’s not rocket science that Coldplay have managed to do this rock star business in their sleep; incredible piano lines, air-punching performances, and everything from splash paints, neon lights, pre-song pilates and confetti cannons on stage. So, we’re expecting nothing but more of the great emotionally engaging sound that has carried the British band to the top of their game. Their comeback single Magic has a devastatingly simple hook with its message of tortured love; Ink carries a glancing guitar rhythm; while True Love is anchored to a heartbreak beat. The standout for us is O (Fly On), a piano ballad that is energetic but vulnerable – we can only imagine that on stage it will be as epic as when the band perform Paradise! Their sixth studio LP will surely please existing fans and, from the sounds of it, gain some new ones too.

what’s it aBout:Sequel to the 2012 blockbuster, this one continues with the adventures of Peter Parker as he comes to realise that the mysterious company Oscorp, sends up a slew of all of his supervillain enemies against him, posing new dangerous threats to his life. In Amazing Spider-Man 2, new villains and super-charged menaces will rise, like Electro and The Rhino, running loose on the streets of New York. Aside from being another visual spectacle with the webbed-superhero swinging from one skyscraper to another, the movie lacks mystery and direction. Though The Amazing Spider-Man 4 is set for release in 2018, we’re thinking that screenplay will be a far stretch and it might just be time to throw in the towel on this burgeoning franchise soon.

As the child grows, Maleficent realises that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land, and her actions that follow will change both worlds forever.

whY it’s worth watChing?Didn’t you wonder why Sleeping Beauty was cursed? There was always a feeling of something missing in the classic Disney story. Well, not anymore. This film depicts the untold tale of the villain from Sleeping Beauty; revealing the events that hardened Maleficent and drove her to curse baby Aurora. You’ll get a direct insight into Maleficent’s character, brilliantly portrayed by Angelina Jolie. The actress has been away from the silver screen for a while due to her personal health, and boy are we excited to see her step back into acting in such an interesting and intriguing role. Of course, there are changes to the origins of the story (based on Charles Perrault’s 17th Century French fairytale); maybe the world’s most sought-after actress didn’t want to portray an out-and-out villain - there is a shadow of tantalising moral ambivalence here, where it’s almost hard to figure out if Maleficent is meant to be good or evil. This may just be Disney’s way of dealing with a complex storyline in what would have been labelled a children’s film. Nevertheless, there’s plenty of great acting from new faces, and enough cliffhangers to get your money’s worth.

44 O’LIFESTYLE

O’Lifestyle. What’s the Buzz

Hello Ghislain! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?I would say I am half a “rat des champs”, a field mouse, half a “rat des villes” city mouse, inspired by a famous French tale. Indeed, after I completed my degree in law and then a masters in business school, I worked for 6 years in the banking industry in Paris. That was a brilliant learning experience, for me; I mean who knew I would start my very own business one day? My “rat des villes” side! Now I am developing and enjoying very much my “rat des champs” side, with a very personal and fascinating project, close to farm lifestyle, which has always been a part of my identity.

Where did you get the idea to start Farmili?First of all, breeding and keeping animals has always been a passion for me. When I was a child, I was lucky to live in a city, an hour away from the countryside where I spent most of my weekends with my family. I came to notice that people who live in cities are more and more interested and involved in the country way of life. Nowadays people are looking for authenticity, quality and simplicity. They prove it every day

in their consumption habits (growth of organic and farmer’s market food), leisure activities (focus on nature takes a bigger part) and behaviours (recycling).

Can you explain the meaning of an urban mini farm to our readers? In a farm one finds all that is necessary for the wellbeing of the community: seasonal vegetables and fruits in many varieties, and the products resulting from animal breeding. Urban farming, or mini-farm, is a concept whereby the farm activities are adapted to an urban environment. At Farmili our area of expertise is the breeding and keeping of small farm animals; we do believe that just like growing vegetables, one can start one’s own animal breeding provided it is adapted to the limited space constraint in urban environments.

Who is behind the design of the coops?Farmili worked with a French design agency, specialised in outdoor furniture. The manufacturing process has been assigned to French companies with a solid know-how and reputation. www.farmili.com

FarmvillEEver wondered what it would be like to live on a farm? For those

who yearn for a bit of countryside flavour yet love the concrete jungle too much to wonder beyond the city limits, we have the thing for you. O’Lifestyle sat down with ghislain Journé, the French man who is bringing farm life to our rooftops - rabbits, chicken coops and all.

hailing all the way from Syria, Chef Adnan Aad is one of the Four Seasons’ best-kept secrets. His style of cooking has made their Pool Grill one of the city’s most

popular hangouts, where you can always be sure to find Doha’s hip crowd hanging out. The talented chef has become an asset the hotel loves to show off and his cooking is definitely worth booking in advance for. “I love my work and believe that as a chef one must treat the food like one treats a human; cooking is kind of an art,” he tells us, “My energy, happiness and creativity come from seeing guests come to the Four Seasons and leave satisfied.” Aad’s culinary journey began at a young age, as he reached high school and decided that cooking was his true passion. While studying hospitality at the Syrian School for Tourism, he worked at various restaurants during his summer holidays until he got his first job at the Azur Hotel in Beirut in 1992. Flash forward to 2006, and the Chef moved to Doha where according to his words is “where I have felt most comfortable and happy.” Making the city his home, Aad has also made the Four Seasons his second base, adding his culinary touch to the hotel’s popular line of cuisine. “We seek to satisfy all the different palates that dine at the hotel. Our menu is a mix of American, South American, Italian, Oriental and Asian. In the Four Seasons, we make it simple, fresh, healthy and natural,” Aad tells us. Their menu boasts a couple of dishes that have fast become popular favourites, from the cold Gazpacho soup and spicy chicken peri peri to the super tender lamb shank and delcious oriental mezza; there definitely is a wonderful array of flavours that have people coming back for more.

O’Lifestyle headed out to one of Qatar’s favourite luxury destinations, the Four Seasons Doha, to sit down with the talent behind their famous cuisine.

awarm welcome on arrival is how they do it at this city favourite, and we’re whisked off to the kitchen ready to get down to business. After being

introduced to Chef Valentin Herbet, it’s apron on and straight onto another cooking adventure. First off on the list was pan fried foie; we started off with four slices of fresh foie gras (Rougie), smoked salt, pepper, one beetroot cooked in water, olive oil, and some balsamic vinegar. Then for garnish we used a beautiful mix of fig jam, gelatine leaves and beetroot; very typical of this popular French dish. It was easier to make then it looked and the whole

trick that needs mastering is the final display. Chef Valentin gave us the reigns to run free and be as creative as we wanted; needless to say the outcome looked pretty awesome.

For our second dish we got to make a delicious rich wild mushroom risotto, a real winner and quite easy but tasty dish. First off we chopped up onions and garlic, which we added to a mix of herbs (thyme, rosemary and parsley) along with some beautiful Portobello and oyster mushrooms. You can basically use any kind of mushrooms you fancy, whatever is available to you and is in season. The key in making risotto is how you cook the rice; not only is using the right rice important, but the

rice must be cooked until a certain golden colour. That’s when we cooked our mushrooms on a separate frying pan for about two minutes, and added our cooked rice, butter, chives, and Parmesan. A quick seasoning with salt and pepper and it was ready!

For our third and final dish, we made something that would make any meat lover drool: a Mediterranean rack of lamb, with assorted vegetables. We started off with a quick marination of the meat with olive oil, smoked salt, pepper, and a mixture of rosemary, thyme and garlic. Having left the lamb rack to sit in the marinade as it came to room temperature, we placed it in a preheated oven until it got that sought after crispy colour. A quick

turn over of the meat, we placed the rack bone side down on the pan and wrapped the exposed ribs in a little foil so that they wouldn’t burn. Twenty minutes later and we had ourselves a beautiful succulent medium rare rack of lamb that had us all fighting over the bone when we got through it. Fingers licked and empty plates all around, we know that this Cucina de Badir was definitely a home run. Until next time!

66 O’LIFESTYLE

Kenneth h adamsgM- hospitality Development company

What are the things you love about the Qatari capital? The quietness of Doha, as opposed to the hectic nature of Dubai or Kuwait City instils a degree of calmness in me that I have been yet to encounter elsewhere. The people are extremely hospitable, and despite the short period of time I have been here, I have felt extremely welcome and at home from day one.

Describe your ideal day off here…Breakfast at Chocolate Bar New York at The Pearl-Qatar; a lively yet relaxing atmosphere with a very good breakfast selection is how I like to start my days during the weekend. I would then probably spend the rest of the day by the beach with something good to read. I find it difficult to completely switch off, so by reading it could be work related, but as long as I’m by the beach, it’s an ideal day off for me!

What’s your secret spot in Doha?I am relatively new to Doha, and since I’ve arrived, work has been keeping me quite busy, so I rarely do leave the vicinity of The Pearl-Qatar, however I have come to discover many “untouched” areas on the island, along with well trodden areas, such as Tse Yang; I definitely consider it one of The Pearl’s not very hidden, but secret spots none the less.
