In addition to golf, and each year several competitions,also on a national level, are played there, many othersports are offered by the Country Club: from tennis tosoccer, excursions in the parks, on foot or on mountainbikes; well-marked paths for tourists to discover the won-derful naturalistic aspects of this region.The entire structure was created by a lengthy project torequalify the ancient hamlet of Santi, one of the small vil-lages that dotted the “wool road”, which linked the slopesof the Gran Sasso with Umbria and Tuscany and whichin the 13th century, with the other two towns that com-pose the Forcella, participated in the construction of thecity of L’Aquila. Notwithstanding the hamlet wasintensely populated through the 1940’s, the followingdecade saw a gradual decline in the number of its inhab-itants. Paolo Cicchetti, an engineer and Chairman of RioForcella Spa (the company that owns the structure),states: “Our primary objective was to put a halt to theenvironmental and economical decay in the area, whilesafeguarding its natural beauties. Our first importantachievement? The golf course, with its regulation 18holes. An initiative created on a game, wouldn’t you say?And which developed, step by step, into a solid decade-long project, now fully completed, with the brand-newfour-star hotel, thanks to the passion and far-sight ofthose who gave their all so that this area became vibrantand alive once again”.

Oltre al golf, che ogni anno ospita già diverse competizio-ni anche a livello nazionale, ampia e ben differenziatal’offerta sportiva del Country Club: dai campi da tennise calcetto, alle possibilità di escursioni nei parchi, a piedio in mountain bike. Percorsi ben identificati facilitano ilturista nella scoperta dei meravigliosi angoli verdi di que-sta regione.L’intera struttura nasce da un decennale progetto di riqua-lificazione dell’antico borgo di Santi, uno dei piccoli vil-laggi che sorgevano lungo la “via della lana”, che collegavale pendici del Gran Sasso con l’Umbria e la Toscana e chenel XIII secolo, con gli altri 2 paesi che compongono laForcella, partecipò alla costruzione della città di L’Aquila.Vissuto intensamente fino a tutti gli anni ’40, questoborgo è andato spopolandosi a partire da metà degli anni’50. L’ing. Paolo Cicchetti, presidente di Rio Forcella Spa,società proprietaria della struttura, afferma: “Il nostroprincipale obiettivo è stato quello di interrompere il pro-cesso di degrado ambientale ed economico di questa zona,salvaguardandone però le bellezze naturali. Il primo gran-de risultato raggiunto? Il campo da golf, con le sue 18buche regolamentari. Un’iniziativa nata per gioco da ungioco, direi! E che si è sviluppata, passo dopo passo, in unaconsistente idea progettuale decennale, ormai completa-mente concretizzatasi con il nuovissimo hotel 4 stelle, gra-zie alla passione e alla lungimiranza di chi ha voluto forte-mente che quest’area rinascesse”.
