DISCUSSION OVER TEAM STATUS FOR NEXT SEASON:
President stated that he would like to see the Squirt, PeeWeee and Bantam level all have a
travel team, with PeeWee likely having a MOHL team as well.
Bantam Team: Want to go minor team using 2007 and (3) 2008 skaters. There are a few 2006
kids that have shown interest in playing.
Chris Gagliardo: Asked if the board would be able to vote on the 3 kids that have asked
to be moved up to the Bantam level.
President: It is not necessary, can set the status of the teams without it.
Adam Burton: Can’t set the team status without knowing the number of kids that will
play. Also stated need to vote on the coaches first. Asked when the declaration
deadline is.
President: deadline to declare is not until June 1st.
2020-2021 COACHING:
Bantam: Pete Labella nominated Jared Zeigler; Chris Gagliardo seconded.
Board voted – unanimous amongst board members present

seconded.

** Assistant coaches will be named by the head coaches, however, will need to be approved by
the board, and will need to pass all safe sport background checks.
DISCUSSION ABOUT WHO HAS A VOTE: President named off who the voting members are:
Executive Board: President (no vote)
Vice President – Pete Labella
Secretary – Cindy Griffin (present but left at 7pm)
Treasurer – Jen Gleason
Board of Directors: Director at Large (outgoing president) – Eric Keller (not present)
Director of In-House – Curtis Perry
Director of Registrations – Charlie Rohrs (Not present)
Director of Fundraising – Charlene Rhodes
Director of Webmaster – Mary Jo Bader
Director of Coaching – Adam Burton
Director of Tournament (Pond Hockey) – John Neeson
Team Managers:
Squirt – Dan Adams
PeeWee Mohl – Matt Wiltse
PeeWee Travel – Chris Gagliardo
• Jen Gleason stated that Eric Keller did not have a vote after February 28th per Bylaws.
• John Neeson asked if Charlie Rohrs was still interested in the position – Curtis stated he had
talked to him about next season and Charlie plans to stay on.
TEAM DECLORATIONS:
Bantam:
• Jared Zeigler said he wants them to tier II AA
• President stated that he was told we will not be approved at a tier II, goes off size and we do
not have the numbers. Also explained can go AA as a Tier III but must be tournament bound.
If we were to move Tier I or Tier II, move ups would not be allowed as the WNYAHL does not
allow for it. Being Tier III allows for the move ups from PeeWee.
• Jared Zeigler stated that the way he understands it is the move ups are allowed by USA
Hockey, it is just the WNYAHL that doesn’t allow them for Tier I or II.
• Questions about Try-Outs: President stated PeeWee kids looking to move up would need to
go to both PeeWee and Bantam try-outs. Need to look at the moves as it affects the entire
organization.
OLEAN AREA YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
o Also stated we have ice reserved in Jamestown for Bantam try-outs
Chris Gagliardo made a motion to vote on the PeeWee kids asking to move up. Jen Gleason seconded
the motion.
• Char Rhodes stated there is a process that needs to be followed before voting, and a vote
tonight would not allow that process to take place. Part of the process is speaking to the
coaches at both levels which were just voted on tonight.
• There was a discussion regarding the insurance, and Curtis Perry provided an Insurance
Waiver Form from USA Hockey that parents would be asked to sign, per Janice at WNYAHL.
This form came straight from USA Hockey – is waives the skaters rights to USA Hockey
Insurance which would cover $50,000 for minor injuries, and $2 million for catastrophic
injuries.
o Pete Labella stated he called Tom Branden, after our last meeting and asked what
the rules are about PeeWee players moving up to Bantams, he was told there are no
rules, and when asked that he put it in writing, was told it is already in writing in the
USA Rulebook.
• Rodney Gleason commented that there are 3 players who want to move up, deserve to
move up and have completed the applications.
• John Neeson asked if we are talking about alternates or full-time roster – Jared Zeigler
answered that alternates do not do him any good, need them full time.
• Jackie Jones spoke and said that she sees as a parent the kids get tired at practices when
they aren’t practicing at their level, if they have the ability they should be allowed to play to
play to their level.
• Adam Chudy stated that 11 nights from tonight are try-outs for other organizations, so the
dilemma for the kids in question is if they go to try out for the other organizations and miss
the Arrows PeeWee try-outs, they would automatically be placed on the MOHL team.
• VOTE FOR PEEWEE PLAYERS (HATCH, CHUDY, AND BARTHOLOMEW) TO MOVE TO BANTAM:
o Votes for: Chris Gagliardo, Adam Burton, Jen Gleason, Pete Labella, Mary Jo Bader
o Votes Against: Curtis Perry, Matt Wiltse, Char Rhodes
o No votes: John Neeson, Dan Adams
o Board members not present: Cindy Griffin, Eric Keller, Charlie Rohrs
o MOTION WAS PASSED.
John Buzzard asked for how the move ups will affect the rest of the organization (trickle down affect):
• Adam Burton stated the reason they need to have 15 players is due the amount of penalties
and injuries that would be called
• Curtis Perry stated that if the Squirts go to a travel team, players are not allowed to play as
alternates for the PeeWee Mohl team. Also, with the 3 moving up, that leaves PeeWee with
19 players – decision will need to be made about having 2 teams once final numbers come
in.
• Try outs/Evals for squirts is scheduled for March 26th from 6-7, PeeWees will be the hour
after from 7-8. Can cancel the Jamestown ice for Bantam as try outs are not needed.
OLEAN AREA YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
• Melissa Veilleux commented that she is now worried about how the move ups will affect her
son. He has never been on a travel team and he deserves to be. Stated that by pulling the 3
players to bantam you are now leaving the remaining peewee team at a disadvantage. Also
stated she just wants her child to have some competition to play against.
o Adam Burton stated that the outgoing president had made the decision to turn the
organization into a MOHL organization, and the only reason his team was travel was
because he fought for it.
o Mike Meyers added that last year at this time we had 22 kids that were eligible to
play squirts, by the time the season started we were at 15, had no choice but to go
with 1 team.
o Curtis also stated that originally the squirt team was going to be travel, but when
the coaches looked at the roster a decision was made to pull back to MOHL, once
the talent level was realized we tried to go back to travel but it was too late.
o Rodney Gleason said the year they were squirt minor they only won one game all
season – have to remember we aren’t here to just win. You have to be patient and
the gap between the skills of the kids will get closer.
o Jen Gleason added that the bylaws state each level will have a travel team.
• Mary Jo Bader said that she has 1 bantam player and 1 PeeWee player going into next
season, she tried to look at the move ups for the organization and knowing the ’07 age
group has the most skaters of any age division, this is the best year to build a bantam team.
• It was brought up that Dakota Gates, Squirt goalie, has applied to move up to PeeWee – this
would leave the squirts with no goalie.
o Matt Wiltse said that is where the board needs to come in and say no to the move
up because it will be detrimental to the squirt team.
o Curtis added it would be his recommendation that he play squirt travel.
OPEN DISCUSSION:
• Mary Jo Bader – we have the opportunity to change our web address to oleanarrows.com
instead of the oleanyouthhockey1.com – would be a limited cost – all agreed it was a good
idea.
• Jared Zeigler – it was brought up that our logo was never trademarked?
o Curtis – it has not been, it was discussed but not approved, would cost around $300
• Pete Labella – Refs for next year – local refs: 1 is retiring, and 1 doesn’t plan to come back.
• Curtis stated he has already been in contact with the refs from Buffalo, will cost us almost
double in fees – currently it is about $75/game, will be $140-150 next year
• John Neeson – for fundraising have we thought about sending invoices to those who do not
participate
o Curtis explained that invoices did go out to those who did not sell the required
amount for the 2 mandatory fundraisers. However, the Bash hadn’t been
considered mandatory
o Adam Burton asked how the biggest fundraiser of the year wasn’t mandatory? –
Curtis also explained that there was a decision back before the season to change up
OLEAN AREA YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
the fund raising this year and the plan was to move away from the bash, which was
why the other 2 were mandatory. However, a board vote took place to decide to
move forward with the Bash, but don’t see how we can make $500 worth of tickets
mandatory.
o Adam Chudy stated that something they did for football was give the parents the
option at the beginning of the season to “opt out” of fundraising by paying a set
amount up front.
▪ Curtis stated this had been discussed last year before registrations, but it
was shot down, however, it will be looked at again for next season. Biggest
reason it was turned down last season was because we had already raised
the registration fees by $100
o John Neeson asked if we need to look at the cost of registration for next year with
the change in referee costs? – yes, registration will need to be evaluated.
• John Neeson stated we need to do more advertising – around the rink?
o Adam Chudy asked why don’t sell banners as part of a sponsorships?
o Curtis stated that he had sent out over 1,000 letters before last season and was able
to bring in about $8,000 in sponsorship money. Problem is the rink is owned by the
City of Olean, and they will not allow banners to be hung – if you want them at a
game you can hang them, then they need to be removed after the game. That is
why we got out logo on the ice, because that was our only chance for any
advertising.
Meeting was adjourned: 7:45pm
** SPECIAL NOTE: The OAYHA Board and entire organization would like to send their deepest
condolences to our President, Curtis Perry, and his entire family. Curtis’s brother, Patrick O’Connor was
tragically killed on Tuesday, March 10th in Florida. Patrick leaves behind a wife and three young
daughters. As an Arrows family please keep the O’Connor and Perry families in your thoughts as they go
through this most difficult time.
