OUR PARISH MISSION Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area. As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary’s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society.

SPECIAL COLLECTION

This Sunday is the 1st Sunday of the month when we take up a special collection for our

sharing parish St. Bride. There are blue envelopes in the pews which you

can use to make a donation.

Thank you in for your generosity.

The Book of the Dead is enshrined near the Baptismal Pool. During the month of No-vember, we remember our family and friends who have died. You

are invited to write their names in the Book of the Dead.

Prayer Service in Time of Infertility, Miscarriage, and Stillbirth Old St. Mary's Church,

Tuesday November 5th at 7pm A grief too often held in and unseen: the inability to conceive, the loss of a child before birth, death at birth. On Tuesday November 5th at 7pm, with sacred song and scripture, let us come together to share the holy journey of grief in community. We will light candles to remember

the lives that were not realized as we would have wished. We will pray for our sisters and brothers whose lives are forever changed. We will sing our fears and our dreams to the one who made us. Together, we will bear witness to the Christian

mystery—that new life emerges both of the womb and of the tomb. As a part of the service, we'd like to proclaim names and light candles in memory of our little ones. So that we might prepare, please feel free to send a private email with the names that we should speak aloud to [email protected]. Some children were not named. That's okay, too. There will be an opportunity to light a candle for the babies that remain in our hearts and on our minds, those without names, those whom we call "Baby Smith," or "Baby Girl Ramirez." This is an opportunity to remember as you best see fit. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your willingness to teach me, to support one another, to be vulnerable, and to lean on each other through the journey of grief."

Month of Saints and Souls and Dias de los Muertos As we enter the month of November we are constantly aware of how things get shaken up. Weather gets wintrier; time seems to get darker; fall moves to winter; we remember loved ones, their victories (like the saints), and their passing (all souls). We start out on the crest of All Saints celebrations, slip into All Souls day reflections and we keep remembering, and the remembering gets to thanking and remembering some more (Thanksgiving, Advent). Sometimes it is helpful to see through the eyes of another culture, how they lead us to see what we so often take for granted. An artistic version, and certainly more musical version, of what I share here is found in the movie, Coco. But I share with you a description of Dias de los Muertos from A Sourcebook on Christian Death. [page 10][1]

The sight of a singing, swinging skeleton is a familiar decorative figure during Días de los Muertos. In fact, skeletons engaged in all types of daily activity such as performing the duties of a police officer, playing in a band, riding a bicycle or driving a bus are common. Though each skeleton has his or her own personality there is one thing that is recognizable in all of them – a distinct grin. These “grins” show the human, ironical nature of the skeleton. Perhaps the skeletons are amused that it is the living who really suffer, struggling to stay alive. Días de los Muertos reminds the living that death is a prelude to resurrection. In this way death, portrayed by the skeleton, is seen also as the beginning of life . . . . When the Spanish laid claim to Mexico's soil, the lives of the Mexican Indians were completely disrupted. Those Indians engaged in mask wearing to transport them beyond the hardships to which they were subjected by the Spanish invasion. In a sense, by wearing the masks they could cover their very souls and so be transformed into someone else in a different, more positive situation. The skull-mask represented the Indians' belief that death was just part of the cycle of life. After the Spanish arrived and introduced the Indians to Catholicism, the skull took on the added meanings associated with the Catholic feast of All Souls Day. The skull-mask was and is occasionally worn with an accompanying full skeleton suit of clothing. It is always worn in the spirit of possibilities and of the unknown.

Having reflected this past week on Saints and all the dear departed, may we find comfort this November (and give thanks) to God who awaits the day we will all share the eternal feast of the resurrection – the truly great unknown – when we are all brought together again in Christ. Fr. Brad

National Vocations Week

November 3 through 9

During this week, say the Paulist Prayer for Vocations.

Almighty and ever faithful God, you spoke your Word to the world in your Son, Jesus Christ, and commissioned St. Paul to bring your word to all nations and to the ends of the earth. Your Spirit led Servant of God Isaac

Hecker to proclaim your word in North America using tools of the modern age. We ask you to call new missionaries in the line of St. Paul and Father Hecker. May they burn with passion to give the Gospel a voice so that all may know the mystery of your love. May they follow the Lord Jesus with the zeal of St. Paul and Father Hecker as they carry on the mission of the Paulist Community. In the power of your Holy Spirit, we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The homebound are still members of our parish community as members of the Body of Christ.

This union becomes real when our Eucharistic ministers take Holy Communion to them in
