PARISH STAFF OUR PARISH MISSION

Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area.

As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary’s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society.

Pastor’s White Board

FIRST APPEARANCES AFTER THE RESURRECTION – STATIONS OF THE RESURRECTION

I will bet, if I asked, most of you could tell me the 14 stations of the cross. If I asked for the scriptural stations of the cross, I’m not sure as many of you would have the answers. And, I’ll bet not many of you have thought about the stations of the resurrection? Since my whiteboard is usually about things that can be known about the faith and its traditions, I thought this would be a fun one. And I’m going to focus on the major “stations” or encounters after the resurrection – but there is a more formalized stations of the resurrection that reflects in more detail on each of the major ones. It may be surprising that there are so few encounters with Jesus after the resurrection, but, as John’s Gospel states, were all the stories to be written down there would not be enough books to hold them. Let us just say that these five kick start all the other encounters with Christ down to today. If you ever get up to my office, you will see that I have an icon cross with these stations of the resurrection, and they are the major first encounters with Jesus after his resurrection. It depicts these 5: 1. Mary Magdalene (and various women) discover the empty tomb. [Mark 16:1, Matt 28:1-6, Luke 24:1-10, John 20:1] 2. Mary Magdalene meets Jesus and thinks he’s the garden-er. [John 20:11-18] 3. Jesus walks with the disciples on the road to Emmaus and breaks bread. [Luke 24:14-35] 4. Jesus appears to disciples in the locked room [Luke 24:36-49], also without and then with Thomas [John 20:19-29]. 5. Jesus makes breakfast on the shore for the disciples at the Sea of Galilee. [John Chapter 21] As YOU think about the resurrection stories in Easter time, have you discovered Jesus in your own life? Through 2000 years’ people who never met Jesus before his death have still been encountering him as risen. Just think of St. Paul – he never knew Jesus till after Jesus resurrection, and probably not until after the Ascension either. I hope as you think of these encounters with Jesus you will discover new ways he might be approaching you and sharing his life with you. Blessings! Fr. Brad

Ordination

Postponed

Together with the current suspension of public liturgies and the Easter sacraments, the priestly ordination of our

Deacon Patrick Bergin has unfortunately also had to be postponed. Patrick's Archbishop in Tanzania is working with Cardinal Cupich and the Archdiocese of Chicago so that his ordination can be rescheduled sometime in the coming months when social distancing requirements have been eased. Stay tuned for future details!

GET REAL! Those of us who flatter ourselves that we have a “realistic” view of the world may listen to the first reading today and say, “Get real!” when we hear Luke’s account of the early, Elysian days of the Christian movement. All seems to be rosy, lots of wonders are performed, everyone shares selflessly, they eat together in “exultation,” and the Lord added to their numbers? Well, who wouldn’t be attracted to a group like this? From the wind that swept through the upper room at Pentecost as the Spirit of God blew over the face of the waters in Genesis, and the fire that appeared over each disciple as the light appeared at the dawn of creation, Luke’s intent in Acts is to show a new creation, a restoration of creation’s original goodness through the working of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who continues to make us into the Body of Christ. We may occasionally, like Thomas in the Gospel, say, “Get real!” but our ultimate reality in the Spirit is to work continually to make our Christian community a new creation, one in which others will find God’s joy and beauty.
