OLD EDISON INN OYSTER & STEAKHOUSE SHUFFLEBOARD TOURNAMENT & Pacific Northwest Shuffleboard Hall of Fame Induction "Laggin" Larry Sawyer (Inducted June 23, 2007) Yahoo!! Here we go, back in the saddle again. After a 6-year hiatus; tournament shuffleboard finds its way back to the Old Edison Tavern in Bow Edison, Washington. On the weekend of June 22-24, 2007 excitement started to escalate the closer we got. Tournament shuffleboard was not the only thing that everyone was gathering for. People mingled together to induct local legendary shuffle- board player “Laggin” Larry Sawyer. There was hope for a large local turnout, but we came up short of our expectations. The Friday night A/B Draw (no photos) had only 6 local players showing up; with Bow Edison being a bit off the beaten path, most of the regular shuffleboard players have to travel at least 2 hours to compete. At least a dozen people braved the hideous Seattle traffic to participate. This gave the A/B Draw only 9 teams to fight it out for the win in a double elimination/single game draw. The winner Nels Anderson/Michelle Foran outlasted the “Man of the Hour” Larry Sawyer & his partner Judy George for 2nd Place. The main event, Saturday – Sunday Tournament, the format was A/B/C. Thank goodness a couple more local players showed up to give us a total of 27 players (9 teams again). There was exciting shuffleboard being played throughout the weekend. There was $700.00 added to sweeten the pot, by owner Gretchen Pickett. The prize wasn’t great but it was good enough to write home to mom about. 1st Place: Tim Nugent, Joanie Millar, Tom Joyce 2nd Place: Gary George, Phil Dupree, Sharon Nugent 3rd Place: Nels Anderson, Mike Strayer, Susan Larson Old Edison Inn, Page 1 The induction of Larry Sawyer was a great success; due to the timeless effort of Phil Dupree & Owner Gretchen Picket. Phil did a marvelous job of organizing the little things and running a great tournament. Although doing most of the work with a heavy heart from losing his sister to illness the week prior!! Sorry Phil!! There were many behind the scenes helpers: Joe PaszKowski, Lydia Briones, Bill Walker (master of ceremonies). Thanks to all who offered words or stories for Larry’s special day. Gretchen put on an awesome feed (Spaghetti/Salad) Thanks to all the bartenders who worked hard to put up with us shuffle- board players. The induction looked glum leading up to the big moment; the weather did not seem like it was going to cooperate, as we needed the sun to come out for the preferred outdoor ceremony. Around 2:00 the sun started coming out and made its appearance, from there it seemed smooth sailing. A few extra people made the long voyage from the big city. Most notably Dan Hitt traveling with Melody Marine, John Rostallan & Steve Kalamarski; traveling some 6 hours to honor Larry on his special day. The ceremony went smooth without a hitch; giving Larry many things to smile about and definitely giving him a chance to go down memory lane on his many shuffleboard adventures. CONGRATULA- TIONS LARRY!! (See PNW HOF Inductions -- Page 3) All in all everything seemed to be a great success. Thanks to everyone who helped, participated in, and for all who showed up to be there for Larry’s special day.
