CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING, FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH,

NOVEMBER 21, 2016

Members present: Pastor Gregg Hemmen, Andrea & Troy Oldert, Connie & Jerry Fallat, Vonnie Houchin, Mike Woods, Moderator Sally Weyer, and Pat Barber.

Moderator Sally Weyer called the meeting to order at 6:30; short meeting was planned so that the council could adjourn at 7 and help with the Christmas Decorating of the Sanctuary.

Minutes from yesterday's Budget Meeting following the church service were corrected; Motion by Jerry Fallat, seconded by Andrea Oldert - passed. Mike Woods made the suggestion to not have the Church Business meeting the same day as the Thanksgiving Dinner following the church service.

Pastor Gregg has been invited to join a Mission Trip to India in 2017. Possibility of this opportunity was discussed. Also discussed was the upcoming Costa Rican Mission trip for the youth. General discussion would encourage pursuing this opportunity and Gregg will report back to us in January.

Moderator Sally asked for any urgent reports from any of the ministries present. Mike Woods reported from the Deacons that the Christmas Baskets are being put together again this year by Bonnie and Steve Almnieda, but this would be their last time.

Troy Oldert mentioned his visit with Jean Watkins following the Budget Meeting. The Annual Church meeting will be January 29, 2017, after the church potluck. Annual reports are due January 9, 2017. There will be regular church services on Christmas Day and on New Year's Day.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Patricia Barber, Church Clerk

Pastor’s Report

December 2016

"Set Jesus apart from everything and everyone as the one who guides your life. Be willing to speak up

gracefully in word and action. Our lives should be a hope others see." – 1st Peter 3:15

In the past few weeks, we as a staff have been spending quite a bit of time talking about and

planning Advent worship. We have kept the platform very basic with our decorations. While I miss

some of the trees and decorations on the platform, I love how decorations have added such a festive

touch to the renovated foyer. At the last deacon’s meeting, we talked about adding some additional

Christmas trees to our supply so that we can continue to decorate the foyer in years to come.

I’m excited about the upcoming baptism service on December 18th. As I write this on December

1st, there are 10 people who have joined us in membership, with 8 of these people scheduled to be

baptized. While this will make our December 18th service full, it’s a good kind of full!

The silent auctions this past month in the foyer have been fun and productive as we raise money

for the Camp Judson Cabin renovation. I believe we are currently over $2,000.00 in our fund raising

efforts with a goal of $13,000.00. We will be collecting an offering on Christmas Eve to continue our

efforts toward our goal. I want to thank the deacons for their efforts in organizing this fund raising.

We will wrap up our study on hell this month. We continue to have a healthy attendance and

discussion with this topic. In January, we’ll be looking at the heaven side of the afterlife.

I am starting to do some planning for early 2017. We are working on banners and visuals for our

trust theme. As we have talked about this in our staff meetings, we’ve decided not to go with a single

verse for 2017 but to use multiple verses on trust. I do believe that we’ll spend quite a bit of time in the

book of Esther in January/February 2017 because there are a lot of trust components in this story that

we can learn from.

We have decided to have worship on December 25 and January 1, 2017. It’s rare that both

holidays fall on a Sunday. We will likely have simpler services on both Sundays and I’ll not be here for

the January 1st worship service.

Since Angela has been working less in the office while she recovers from her car accident, it’s

been a challenge to cover the office hours. Hopefully we are not missing too many people who drop in.

If any of the Council members hear of people we’re missing, please let us know so we can reach out to

them.

Thank you for the privilege of serving among you.

Youth Ministries Report December

This year is going by far too fast! We are going to Costa Rica this summer and we are excited. I am looking forward to January when we can get in front of the church and talk about this trip with the congregation. In the new year we are looking to finishing some of our projects, lighting in the youth room, painting touch ups, etc. We have some new youth leaders that will be joining us in the new year. As the group is growing we are excited to have more people who are led to invest in these young lives. I look forward to updating you with trip info as well as how God is moving in this group. Blessings,

Nate Sales

Music Notes December 2016 Council Meeting

Music work and plans for the coming month:

Choir—

It is a tall order to expect a choir to have a piece ready for service each week, especially with

only 40 precious minutes of rehearsal each week. Our choir has done and will continue to

provide the backdrop for our Advent services.

In the new year, we will focus on a group of songs entitled Journey to Hope

2. Praise Team

With the stage cleared for Advent, PT music has a different look and feel.

Preparation for our weekly services continues with the change to Advent music.

3. Bells

Playing the piece that is being played each week during Advent!

4. Kid’s Music

A few girls will be singing a special piece during Advent

Currently during Wednesday WOW time with Marilyn Kallendar, Jim Collins, and Lucas

Michelson

5. Personal Growth

Working through a Why Practice Matters course to improve our rehearsals

Looking through materials from Worship Initiative which offers both spiritual and musical

lessons for many of our songs.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gifts! 2 Corinthians 9:15

Ministry of Stewardship Meeting Minutes

November 14, 2016

Present: Bob Toms, Paula Johnannessen, Donna Skinner, Connie Fallat, Heidi Christner and

Gregg Hemen.

Gregg opened in prayer at 6:05 pm.

The October meeting minutes were approved by all.

The Treasurer’s and Financial reports were reviewed and discussed.

● Paula made a motion to move the current Youth Fund $212.92 and Youth Program

$77.08 monies into the Camp Judson scholarship account. All approved.

● The amount of $975.00 discussed at last meeting still needs to be moved from the

Parking lot account to the Vision Fund account.

● For clarification, the ABW money was put in the ABW love gift account and then

removed as noted.

All approved with above changes.

New business:

Connie reports that her and Ken will meet at BHFCU on Wednesday, 11/16/16 to pull interest

out of the CD accounts. (Whisler, Palmerton, and Camp Scholarship). This will continue to be

done annually so that we can receive a separate check for each account to better track the interest

for each account.

Current signatories at BHFCU are Connie Fallat, Ken Wrede, and Gary Oldert. We voted to

remove Ken and Gary to add Bob Toms and Paula Johnannessen to the account.

After discussion, it was decided to invest the recent donation of $7,000 for the Whisler Memorial

with BHFCU on a 7-8 yr CD at a 2.4% APY interest.

Gregg will follow up on designations for the Elmer Henderson and Georgia Lease memorials.

Heidi will move $50 from the General fund into the above memorials.

Heidi shared that the Retired Ministers and Missionaries offering will be collected in December.

Heidi will move $11.83 from the Contingency fund to zero out the negative balance of the Event

Ticket account.

Bob closed in prayer at 7:05 pm

Respectfully Submitted

Christian Education Meeting (CE): December 05, 2016

The Ministry of Christian Education (CE) met, as scheduled, on December 05, 2016 at First

Baptist Church (FBC). CE Board Members also discuss business via email, phone, text, and

informal meetings as needed between the established first Mondays of the Month Meetings.

Current members are Jerry Fallat, Juanita Rowe, Carol Misterek, Jeannene Woods, and Danie

Koskan. Nate Sales is First Baptist Church (FBC) Staff Representative to CE. Present for the

meeting were Jerry, Juanita, Carol, Jeannene, and Nate. Sally Weyer was present as FBC Council

Moderator.

Prayer: Opening prayer was offered.

October 2016 Minutes: Approved with correction that Nursery Workers should report at 7:50 AM on Sunday Mornings

(correcting the error of reporting at 7:30 AM.

Budget Overview: (a) Jerry stressed that items submitted for reimbursement should be completed in a timely

manner, so that balances reflected are accurate. Receipts should be submitted within one

week of purchase to be signed. This is especially important as the end of the fiscal year

approaches.

(b) About $1,300.00 was raised from the pie auction held at Thanksgiving. This will be used

for the mission trip fund.

Costa Rica Mission Trip:

(a) Questions that need to be addressed are specifics regarding the trip, including who will be

attending and dates of the trip. Nate indicated that there are 16 youth (grades 8 and up) at

this time who plan to attend, as well as four adults. The dates are tentatively July 31-

August 08, 2017, to be adjusted as needed for flight arrangements.

(b) Cost is about $1,800.00 per person. This covers transportation, meals, and lodging, but not

passport cost. (This is the responsibility of each attendee.)

(c) Activities are coordinated with the Christian Churches in Costa Rica. Events will include

Vacation Bible School, a building project (to be identified), and soccer tournaments for

outreach.

(d) Nate has already had one meeting with parents and youth who are interested in this mission

trip. It has been suggested that a specific written plan with details of the trip be developed

so that potential donors can fully understand the scope and details of this outreach.

(e) It is also suggested that a CE Member and Missions Member be present for this next

meeting, and others who desire to be present.

Sally Weyer

(a) Sally reported that there will be a Church Council Focus Meeting again at the beginning of

the new year, or as close as possible, to continue to establish a pathway for FBC. This

continues the work from last year’s Focus Meeting. This year, ideas from FBC Staff,

identified last year, will be addressed. Jerry will attend as the re-elected chair of CE.

(b) Sally explained that each ministry will be asked to consider carefully a mission approach in

seeking to “be the church” within FBC, within the community, and within the world.

(c) CE is asked to generate ideas as to how this can be specifically done through CE Ministry;

Page 10: Old Business New Business - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/firstbaptistchurch125/documents/ChurchCo… · verse for 2017 but to use multiple verses on trust. I do believe that

these ideas can be sent to Sally as FBC Council Moderator.

Wednesday Night Program (WOW): (a) Reviewed December activities and festivities for December.

(b) Reviewed dates of WOW. Note: There will be no WOW on December 21, December 28,

and January 04- due to holiday events. WOW resumes on January 11, 2017.

(c) Reviewed staffing for January through March for WOW.

(d) Christmas decorations were successful for WOW on November 30th

. A small Christmas

Pageant by the children will take place on December 7th

during WOW. A Christmas Craft

Bazaar for children will take place on December 14th

during WOW.

Sunday School: (a) Sally shared positive remarks about her 4

th & 5

th Grade Sunday School Class and the

growth of the children. The Toothbrushes for Tots mission project, which supports the

Hochoka Christmas Charity, was successful. There may be pictures to share later of the

children to whom these stocking items will be given.

(b) We are thankful for Sally and Bob in their teaching of FBC children.

(c) There will be no Sunday School on December 25th

and January 1st. Sunday School

resumes on January 08, 2017.

Nursery: (a) CE Reviewed volunteers for Nursery. There is no volunteer for Christmas Eve, Christmas

Day, or for January 1st. CE supports not having nursery for those services. Nate will

discuss with FBC Staff.

(b) Nate will see that information is in the church newsletter regarding decisions about

Nursery.

Library: (a) Carol plans to use the remaining balance for her 2016 Budget before the end of the year,

most likely for additional books for children.

(b) Carol, Nate and Troy will meet to discuss the new library room. However, Nate stated

that there are upstairs fire sprinkler decisions to be made prior to choosing windows,

doors, and other construction details.

Other:

(a) FBC Council approved CE recommendation for Jeannene Woods as a permanent CE

Ministry Member. This is her first meeting as an official member.

(b) Gift baskets are now ready for the December auction to benefit Camp Judson.

(c) Reviewed term limits for all members of CE. Election was held for 2017: Jerry remains

as Chair for 2017 and will mentor the new Chair in 2018 to complete his CE Service.

Juanita remains as Secretary and back-up to Chair; Carol remains as back-up to

Secretary.

(d) CE will have a work time after the January Meeting to help clean out items that are no

longer needed in storage areas. These can be sold for the mission fund or donated if

necessary.

Meeting was closed with prayer.

CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE

November 29, 2016

Members present: Nate Sales, Tim Skinner, Katie Peterson, Kathy Sosa and Sally Weyer

Sally opened the meeting with prayer.

This committee reconvened at the directive of the congregation at the annual meeting on November 20,

2016. Input from congregation members indicated that wording in the constitution in specific areas

needed change to enhance clarity. Jean Watkins, one congregant, provided written input of areas for

this committee to consider.

The following areas were reviewed and changes made given congregant input and committee

discussion:

Legal officer status was included in the duties of the chair of Physical Maintenance and

treasurer. All officer duties (Moderator, Physical Maintenance chair, Clerk and Treasurer)

received a cross referencing to Article 7, Section II.

Article 8, Section II Social Committee, A—wording was changed to include the phrase “at least”

Article 9, Section I, C—insert phrase “as recommended by the Youth Minister” or whichever is

the appropriate title. Nate will check with his job description for correct wording.

Article 16, Section II, D—reworded to clarify expectations for meeting attendance

Article 17, Section I—remove words Election and from heading

Replace “be elected” with “serve”

Article 18, Section I

remove words Election and from heading

Replace “be elected” with “serve”

Section II – delete A, D,E, & F

Meeting closed with prayer given by Nate.
