Since 1858, the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm has played an important role in the history of Olathe. This year, Mahaffie is commemorating that role with a year-long celebration of the “Sesquicentennial” birthday of its centerpiece: the 150-year old limestone farmhouse. James B. and Lucinda Mahaffie came to Olathe in 1858 and soon developed a 320-acre farm located just a mile outside of town. Mr. Mahaffie was first and foremost a farmer but also a smart businessman. In 1865, construction of the Mahaffies’ stone house was completed, with a lower level designed to serve as a kitchen and dining hall for stagecoach passengers. Today, the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm remains the only stagecoach stop open to the public on the Santa Fe Trail. The site operates year-round as a working 19th century farm, complete with horses, oxen, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and a cow-all heritage breeds from that era. The site is owned by the City of Olathe and managed by Parks and Recreation to provide visitors of all ages a first-hand experience of daily life on an 1860s farm…and a connection to the nationally significant Mahaffie story and Olathe’s rich history.

Admission: Activities, admission and hours vary by season. Visit Mahaffie.org or call 913-971-5111. Monday-Friday, visit exhibits in the Heritage Center and explore the historic Mahaffie grounds. Weekends November-March Mahaffie House is open and tours provided throughout the day. 1860s Living History activities offered during special events only November-March.
