Fellow Oklahomans, Welcome to the 2016 edition of the Oklahoma Agricultural Statistics Bulletin. Thank you for your interest in our state’s ag industry. The information in this bulletin represents the work of Oklahoma’s dedicated farmers and ranchers. The agricultural industry truly leads the way in growing new wealth; adding value and vitality to our communities. Oklahoma agriculture also remains strong in the global marketplace. One out of every nine Oklahoma export dollars is the result of an ag product. In each corner of our state, producers are growing wealth from rows of vegetables to pastures of cattle. We are very fortunate to have a partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA-NASS) that allows us to collect and distribute this bulletin each year. I commend USDA-NASS on the excellent service that they provide and work that they do in our Oklahoma Field Office. In fact, the Oklahoma USDA-NASS office is the national leader among peer groups. The world’s population is projected to grow to nearly 9 billion consumers in just under 35 years making the need for useful agricultural statistics increasingly important. The information in this bulletin not only shows continued growth in the Oklahoma agricultural economy but also helps guide the decisions of our producers and policy makers. Please join me in thanking those who made this information possible as well as those who continue to propel our industry into the future and feed the world. Sincerely,
Jim Reese Secretary of Agriculture

Agriculture Producers and Data Users:
In a world where changing environments can take on many different meanings, one thing is certain: High quality information is essential to making sound decisions! Here at USDA-NASS, we are dedicated and committed to providing timely and accurate statistics in service to agriculture - not by simply collecting data for the government, but by communicating that information back to the agriculture community and its constituents to help make informed decisions.
It is a pleasure to provide you this 2016 edition of Oklahoma Agricultural Statistics. This publication, which is also available on our web site, is published annually to meet the diverse need for a reliable reference book on state agricultural production, prices, farm income, and various other economic data.
First, let me acknowledge the many farmers, ranchers, agribusinesses, and commodity groups across the state who diligently provided their information, and their support throughout the year. Without their cooperation, there would be little content for this bulletin.
I would like to especially recognize our team of NASDA enumerators across the state, and in our Data Collection Center. Their unwavering dedication in collecting quality data allow us to provide Oklahoma with high quality agricultural statistics, and to keep the State’s Official record on agriculture.
Finally, a special note of thanks also goes to the Oklahoma State Board of Agriculture and Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry for providing essential resources to help make this bulletin possible.
For your questions, comments, and informational requests, please feel free to contact my office.

Wilbert Hundl, Jr. State Statistician

respectively. Other districts received less than 2 inches in precipitation. Despite this, all districts were below normal precipitation levels throughout January, with the North Central district experiencing the largest departure at just 64 percent of normal. Drought conditions were more extreme across the western half of the state, with areas of the Southwest and West Central districts experiencing severe to exceptional drought. Temperatures averaged in the mid 40’s across the state, with the lowest temperature recorded at -6 degrees at Boise City on Sunday, January 4th and the highest temperature recorded at 84 degrees at Alva on Tuesday, January 27th. Temperatures were lowest during the first week of January, with several Mesonet locations experiencing freezing temperatures below the teens. Warmer temperatures in the low 80’s were experienced throughout the state during the last week of January. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly adequate to short.
FEBRUARY: Precipitation levels continued to be rated below normal throughout the state, with the largest departures seen in the North
Central and Southwest districts. The state received no more than 2 inches of rainfall throughout February with the exception of the Southeast District, which averaged 2.03 inches. Recent snow events provided light moisture in areas of the Panhandle and Central Oklahoma, while freeze damage may have affected wheat and canola in the Southwest district. Drought conditions worsened across the western half of the state, with areas of the Southwest and West Central districts experiencing extreme to exceptional drought. Temperatures averaged in the mid 30’s across the state, with the lowest temperature recorded at 1 degree at Kenton on Tuesday, February 24th and the highest temperature recorded at 85 degrees at Arnett on Saturday February 7th. Temperatures were lowest during the first and last week of February, with several Mesonet locations experiencing freezing temperatures in single digits. Warmer temperatures were experienced mid-month throughout the state. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly short to adequate.
MARCH: March saw exceptional drought conditions increase by nearly 3 percentage points by the end of the month. Topsoil and
subsoil moisture at the end of March was mostly short to adequate. Small grains were rated mostly fair to good throughout the month. By the end of the month wheat jointing was only 49 percent compared to a five year average of 63 percent, and rye jointing was only 50 percent compared to 73 percent for the five year average. Oats planted was at 76 percent, and 56 percent had emerged, 13 and 8 points behind the five year average. Row crop seedbed preparation was underway and slightly behind average for all crops. Livestock was rated mostly fair to good, with 6 percent rated excellent.
APRIL: Drought conditions improved early in the month with 8 percent of the state in exceptional drought. Throughout the month
soil conditions remained stable with about 79 percent of topsoil, and 65 percent of subsoil rated short or adequate. Winter wheat, rye, oats, and canola were rated mostly fair or good by the end of the month. Wheat headed was 74 points, up from the five year average of 53 percent. Rye jointing was 94 percent compared to a five year average of 90 percent. Row crop seedbed preparation was ahead of average except for corn which was 5 percent behind normal at 87 percent; 13 percent of corn was emerged by the end of the month, 10 points below the five year average.
MAY: May started with most districts reporting above average rainfall and no areas with severe or exceptional drought. Soil
conditions were very good throughout the month, with approximately 85 percent of topsoil rated adequate or surplus, and 72 percent of subsoil rated short to adequate. Wheat fields were doing well with 74 percent of wheat rated fair to good condition. Similarly, over 60 percent of canola was rated in fair to good condition. NOVEMBER: The month of November experienced much needed rainfall, ultimately reducing the statewide moderate drought
percentage to 13 percent by month’s end. Towards the end of the month, the main weather hazard was freezing rain and ice across west central Oklahoma, where there was the convergence of low temperatures from the northwest and abundant moisture from the southeast. Small grain seeding was virtually complete across the state, with the exception of oats, which reached 68 percent by the end of the month. Row crop conditions continued to be rated mostly fair to good. The majority of row crops were harvested by the end of November, other than soybeans and cotton, which reached 92 and 75 percent harvested, respectively. Conditions of pasture and range continued to be rated mostly good to fair. Livestock conditions also continued to rated mostly good to fair.
DECEMBER: Oklahoma experienced some of the worst weather of the year in December. The heaviest rain was in the East Central
and Southeast districts. According to the Mesonet, flooding was the main concern across eastern Oklahoma and freezing rain left more than 200,000 without power. 2016 Oklahoma Agricultural Statistics
Basis for State Estimates Although a state's actual agricultural export value cannot be measured directly, USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) maintains estimates of state shares of U.S. exports for total and selected individual commodities based on U.S. farm cash receipts data. The estimates are based on the calendar year. ERS has discontinued updates of an alternative fiscal-year (October to September) series of state export estimates based on state and commodity shares of production, but continues to provide the historical estimates based on that methodology. With this approach, the sales revenue received by U.S. farmers for their commodities is estimated by ERS using data on farm cash receipts. These receipts are calculated from production quantities and prices, or from production values, in each U.S. state during the calendar year. The production volume, prices, and value of agricultural commodities in each state are estimated from farm survey data collected by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. In order to estimate the value of a state's sales of agricultural commodities to the international market, the share of a commodity's farm receipts by state needs to be determined. These shares are then applied to the U.S. agricultural export value of that commodity. That is, a state's estimated export value of a commodity is determined by that state's share of the total U.S. farm receipts from sales of the given commodity. These figures should not be interpreted as an actual measurement of a state’s exports. Agricultural Exports: Oklahoma and the United States, 2012-2014
