Prior to the passing of Hurricane Irene fishing was very good. Early in the week we were on the water before

light and each day had a good top water bite, catching 15 to 20 fish in the first hour or so of light. Once the sun got up higher in the sky the bite ended quickly. Pop’rs, tiny torpedo, gun fish and other baits with a rear prop all drew strikes.

Once the top water bite is over we switched to plastics using senko’s, flukes, worms and flipping and pitching baits to continue catch-ing throughout the morning. Several days af-ter 10 a.m. we had a difficult time getting bit, just picking at the fish, catching one every half hour or so. The water was very hot and the fish were thin and sluggish.

We have not used shiners all summer, pre-ferring to catch bass on our artificial bait. Wednesday, prior to the arrival of Irene, we decided to take shiners and see how the fish would bite. We were lucky and got on a large group of fish catching a lot of bass up to 7 pounds on our live shiners. The fish were very active right in front of the storm and were even eating the dead shiners. Several times we caught four fish on one shiner. The fish did not seem to care if the shiners were dead or alive; they were feeding. We caught bass from sunup until noon and then ran out of bait. We switched over to Carolina rigs and caught seven or eight more fish after that. But soon they quit altogether sending us to the ramp and into the air conditioning.

Florida Community Health Centers (FCHC) has recently opened a Women’s Center

within Lakeshore Medical Center located at 1100 N. Parrott Ave. here in Okeechobee. With eight regional offices, FCHC feels it is important to have a practice specializing in all as-pects of women’s health.

A full spectrum of women’s health concerns, including OB/GYN, thy-roid, diabetes, Pap Tests, Mammo-grams and wellness checkups are offered by a locally based nurse prac-titioner.

Paulette Disinger, ARNP, has served the Okeechobee area for more than 20 years, and is assisted by specialists in testing, scheduling, obstetrics and insurance. The practice emphasizes a family atmosphere where women are made to feel special. “Whatever a woman needs, we can provide,” she said.

The office takes pride in the fact they

are never too busy to listen. Most health issues can be resolved at the Women’s Center. For issues that may require, there is a family doctor with-in the practice. Specialists within the community may be consulted when needed.

With training in colposcopy, ultra-sound, biopsy, post-partum care, fam-ily planning and other specializations, Paulette handles diseases unique to women and helps women maintain their quality of life through consul-tation, examination and encourage-

ment. “We want to make a woman feel special and will take the time to do so,” she said.

The Women’s Center and Lakeshore Medical accept Medicaid, Medicare and most insurances and also works with those who may have no insur-ance. They offer evening hours each Monday when they are open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tues. thru Thurs. hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Translation services are avail-able in Spanish.
