The big lake is providing some great fishing whether you are fishing for pan fish or bass. Pan

fishing anglers are catching blue gills and shell crackers in the shallow wa-ter areas. The better catches have come around the moon phases, but every day I am seeing anglers catching blue gill or shell crackers. Cat fish are always in the mix these days on Lake Okeechobee. Anglers fishing with a rig that stays very near or on the bottom will catch blue gill, shell cracker and catfish in the same areas. The primary baits for all of these fish are numerous. Grass shrimp is always good for all species, crickets and red worms are go-to baits at other times. It will be interesting to see if the shell cracker hang around through and past the next full moon phase. Many anglers think this was the best shell cracker sea-son they have ever seen.

Bass fishing is still very good. We are catching bass daily on a spinner bait thrown into and around the grass lines on the outside edge of the lake. It is critical to be on the water before light as the bite will end most days by 7 a.m. or shortly thereafter. Once the sun gets well into the sky, anglers targeting big fish will turn to flip-ping and pitching. A jig, creature bait or a worm flipped in and around the heavy cover will draw strikes from the big fish. If you put your bait in into heavy cover, you will get bit.

Remembering 9-11! In honor of our First Respond-ers, a memorial service will be held in Veteran’s

The Okeechobee High School Junior ROTC, the Okeechobee High Trum-peters, Cub Scout Park 964, Soloist Janet Allshouse with the music of Steve Eubanks will all be included in the ceremony.

The Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County announces their September Investor Luncheon on September 4th at 11:30 am at the Williamson Center.
