The Great Depression• A spiral of monetary and fiscal problems when the U.S. stock market
crashed that escalated into an international catastrophe.
Russo-Japanese War of 1904• War between Russia and Japan with the victorious Japanese kicking
out Russia of Manchuria and established its own sphere of influence there.
Manchukuo• The name Japan renamed Manchuria once they established a colony
there.
Anti-Comintern Pact• Pact signed by Japan after leaving the League of Nations against
communism with Germany, thereby forming an alliance that would lead to a more formal one during WWII.
Rape of Nanjing• 250,000 Chinese being slaughtered in a matter of a few weeks by
invading Japanese troops.
Blitzkrieg• Literally meaning "lighting war" that German forces destroyed
everything in its path with unprecedented speed.
Axis Powers• During WWII, an alliance between Germany, Italy, Japan, and other
countries associated with those three.
Allied Powers• During WWII, an alliance between Britain, France, the Soviet Union,
the United States, and other countries associated with those four.
Winston Churchill• WWII Prime Minister of Britain who replaced diplomatically minded
Chamberlain.
Franklin D. Roosevelt• WWII U.S. President that oversaw majority of the war before dying in
office.
Battle of Britain• Hitler launching a massive air bombing over Britain, which the British
succeeded in keeping the German army out.
Indochina• A peninsula in Southeast Asia lying roughly south or southwest of
China, and east of India.
Pearl Habor• U.S. naval station in Hawaii that the Japanese bombed after the U.S.
refused to lift sanctions against Japan. The bombing of naval station resulted in the U.S. declaring war on Japan, and Germany declaring war on the U.S.
Manhattan Project• The secretly development of an atomic bomb in the United States
during WWII.
D-Day• English, American, and Canadian forces launched their biggest
offensive, landing of the beaches of Normandy, and with the help of French resistance forces helped liberate France.
Harry Truman• United States president that authorized the bombing of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki in Japan, forcing Japan surrendering and ending WWII.
Hiroshima• First city in Japan that an atomic bomb was dropped on by the United
States.
Nagasaki• Second city in Japan that an atomic bomb was dropped on by the
United States.
Holocaust• Known as the "Final Solution" in Nazi Germany, one of the largest acts
of genocide in history against Jews, Slavs, Gypsies, homosexuals, disabled people, and political dissidents in Germany and German-occupied territories.
Marshall Plan• Plan instituted by the United States that billions of dollars were made
available for reconstruction for all European countries (only accepted by Western European nations).
