News and Events

Scholarship and Awards Luncheon

Two lovely young ladies received our Scholarships at the Ojai Valley Woman’s Club Scholarship luncheon on June 6th. Everyone feasted on club provided Chicken and dessert cake as well as many yummy side dishes prepared by club members, making this event very special. Hospitality Chair Marlene Fowler did an outstanding job with a red, white, and

blue theme for the table settings and clubhouse décor, with assistance from Irene Petroff, Tee Downard, Kassy Erickson, Carina Solecki, and Joanne Caldwell. It was a pleasure to meet our scholarship recipients, Chelsea Davis with her dad Jack, and Chantal Robles Ramirez,

who brought her mother Lupe Robles and her brother. We wish them both well in their studies. We also enjoyed meeting some of the young people who had won ribbons at our club-level Fine Arts Festival. This event is one of

the highpoints of our year and was well attended by winning club member participants. There were also winners to celebrate from the California Federation of Woman’s Clubs Arts Competition held in Los Angeles. They are: 1st place ribbon to Audrey Hernandez (Matilija art junior high category), and 3rd place ribbon to Ethan Garcia (Mira Monte

photography 4-6 grade category). Thanks to the Scholarship committee Donna Lloyd, Mary Kazmer, and Liz Mikhalek for choosing the deserving recipients. Thanks also go to Joanne Caldwell, Noreen Olivas, and Liz Mikhalek for coordinating the Student Fine Arts

Festival details and thanks to all that helped make the event a very special afternoon. Club Dues Last Call!

Dues are now late for the 2013-2014 year if you haven’t gotten them mailed. Your participation in club activities and fund raisers is what keeps the club operating. If you haven't sent in your dues for 2013-2014, your name will not get into the yearbook and you won't be getting the September Newsletter with all the news about upcoming programs and

projects. Before you take off for your summer vacations, or are recovering from the one you just took, drop that check for $35.00 in the mail to OVWC, PO Box 442, Ojai 90324. If you want to keep up with the news about Club activities but can't actively participate at this time, with dues of

$55.00, you can become a Sustaining Member, receive the yearbook with an * indication (sort of “do not call”) and continue to get the Newsletter to keep up with your friends. For further information you can call Membership Chairperson

Donna Lloyd at 796-0077. Yearbook Corrections

The new yearbook will be going to press very soon so if you have corrections to any of your information, please contact Yearbook Editor Donna Freiermuth ASAP at 646-3839 or [email protected] .

Building News Judy Murphy reports that a buyer is being sought for our wonderful old antique stove. The funds will go a long way towards the start of fixing up the back activity room which needs new flooring and an update to the wall paneling, among

other things. If you know of anyone who might be seriously interested in the stove, please contact Judy Murphy at 640-3029.

Activities & Fundraising Updates:

4th of July Parade

The chairs will be out in front of the festively decorated clubhouse and your place will be saved for the parade on the 4th of July. Everyone is asked to bring a little breakfast refreshment to share. We’ll be making Bloody Marys this year, instead of Mimosas.

Parking at the clubhouse is problematical as there is a youth run that starts at 9:00 and the police close down Ojai Avenue at least by 8:15. So if you want to park at the clubhouse you need to probably be there before 8:00 am. You

could arrive that early and enjoy a Lions Club Breakfast from 6:00-11:00 a.m. across the street at Chaparral Auditorium. It will take a little planning to get there but the Parade begins at 10:00 a.m. with the Theme “Celebrate the Goodness of America”; the Grand Marshall is Tom Jamison. We hope to see you there wearing something red, white, &

blue. And don’t forget about the Libbey Bowl Patriotic Concert on Wednesday evening, July 3rd at 6:00 pm!

Board Meetings There is no regularly scheduled Board meeting for the month of July. The date and time of the August meeting will be announced at a later date.

Bunco There is no Bunco scheduled for the month of July. August Bunco will start up on the second Wednesday of the

month which is August 14th at 6:15 pm. Please let Donna Lloyd know if you’ll be attending; we need at least 8 players to roll the dice. Bring an appetizer-type snack, something to drink and $5 for the kitty. It’s a fun, fast paced game so come to the clubhouse for a fun summer evening event.

ESO Reading Group For the month of July, you will have an extra month to catch up on your summer reading list. We’ll meet again in

August on Monday the 12th at 6:00 p.m. Don’t forget to bring a few books you have read recently that you would like to talk about.

Dinner Out We had another friendly dinner out, this time on June 18th at Azu, 457 E. Ojai Avenue in Ojai. Attendees included

Rocky & Ginny Rockefeller, Carina Solecki, Linda & Bill Nugent, Liz Mikhalek, Mary Burright, Marlene Fowler, Judy & Tom Murphy, Carol McCluer, Donna Lloyd, and Marcia Hester. Woman’s Club members and guests enjoyed an evening out with good food and good company; a lovely start-of-summer event.

Dinner Out for July is planned for Boccali’s Ojai Restaurant on Tuesday, July 30 at 6:30 pm. Bocalli’s is located at the foot of Dennison Grade in Ojai’s East End (3277 E. Ojai-Santa Paula Rd.). No Dinner Out for August is currently planned.

Bring A Guest (or Two) BBQ You are invited to bring a prospective member to an informal BBQ and potluck at the clubhouse on Friday, August 2nd at noon. Hamburgers and lemonade will be provided by the club, members with last names beginning A – M bring

salads, and members with last names beginning N – Z bring dessert. The club is looking to increase our membership ranks and we’d like to see all active members attend and bring at least 1 guest. Besides, it’s a nice excuse for a summer social. Come share your latest news and vacation adventure stories. You and your guest can learn more about the club’s

history and what’s planned for the new year. Please RSVP to Donna Lloyd at 796-0077 by Tuesday, July 30th. September General Meeting

Bring someone with you to our first General Meeting and Tea of the new club year on Thursday, September 5th. Our club officers are full of ideas and want to tell you all the exciting new plans for the upcoming year. The program will be

Pet Therapy for Elders and Others with a speaker from Santa Barbara. Bobbi Mickle is currently seeking your suggestions for future speakers and programs for the upcoming club year. You may contact her at 646-7982.

October Fashion Show The Board is working hard on plans for our annual Fashion Show and Luncheon. Details on the date and menu will be provided in a later newsletter but, if you’ve got a secret desire to strut your stuff let Bobbie Mickle know and she’ll put

you in her runway lineup. November Health Fair

Several organizations are pulling together to organize a repeat of last year’s Community Health Fair held at Little House. This year, our clubhouse will be the site of the Health Fair and the emphasis will be on providing information about the federal Affordable Healthcare Act. Health professionals from many fields of expertise are already being signed

up to participate. The main organizers are Maureen Hannah, Patty Nye and Connie Biggers of the Oak View Women’s Club, and Judy Murphy and Carina Solecki of the Ojai Valley Woman’s Club. Our club is signing up to help wherever needed so keep your calendar open for early November. The date will be announced soon.

gently used jackets, warm vests, jeans, suspenders, belts, and wallets.

Food Sharing

The Food Share “CAPS” pantry has a need for items all year long. Besides non-perishable food items, there is a need for toiletries, baby formula & diapers, and personal care products. Next time you are out shopping, consider picking up an extra can or container of food items to donate, especially when stores are have their “dollar sales”. Our collection basket

is always located near the door of the Clubhouse at all meetings for your donations. During the summer months, you can take your donations directly to the CAPS office located on Fox St. Please be generous for our neighbors in need.
