    Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids(FRHF)

Conventional petroleum based, mineral oil can ignite and burn if sprayed, poured, or otherwise permitted to come into contact with hot surfaces, openflames, molten metal, or electric arcs. Accidental leaks pose a serious threat toproperty, jobs and the lives of persons working in its vicinity.FRHF are based on media more difficult to ignite than mineral oil. hey are lesslikely to continue burning out of or beyond the area of intense heat. heynormally will not continue to burn once the source of ignition has been removed !i.e. ! they self!e"tinguish.hey are not fire!proof and some types may ignite and burn if the ignition sourceis higher than #$$oC. However, if burning occurs only in the areas of intenseheat, it would have offered an advantage over mineral oil. %mployees must be

protected from direct e"posure to the heat and flame whether it be momentary orsustained.here are two main groups or four main types of FRHF. hese are&'ater containing fluids(. HF!A )*+ high water based fluid. HF!- *+ water in oil emulsion. HF!C *+ water!glycol, and

Anhydrous fluids/. HF!0 phosphate!esters, and othershe use of FRHF however should not give one a sense of false security. 1ne

must use good design practices and common sense when making decisionsregarding hydraulic systems in high fire danger areas. %ffort must be made toassure a leak!tight system. 2pecial attention should be given to the types andpositioning of hydraulic lines and hoses. 'hen lines are located directly over orvery close to a potential fire source, they should be guarded or shielded. FRHFsshould be monitored in service on a regular basis to ensure that they are beingmaintained in good condition.

his guide contains a comprehensive coverage of issues regarding the use of FireResistant Fluids.

he information contained under different section headings in this guide is applicablein other sections. For e"ample, the information on Fluid 7anagement under the FireResistant Hydraulic Fluid section is applicable to all other sections.

4ikewise, the fire prevention guidelines under the Heat ransfer 2ection is applicablein all other sections.
