Oil sands operations sector: extraction, production and upgrading of bitumen.
Oil sands operations workforce: directly employed by oil sands companies and includes workers:*
– located on-site
– in head and regional offices (e.g., in Calgary, Edmonton)
*The worker must be fully supporting oil sands operations in order to be counted in the sector’s workforce numbers.
Out of scope:
• Workers supporting both oil sands and conventional E&P (usually employed by large, integrated companies)
• Oil and gas service workers
• Construction workforce
• Support service roles (i.e., induced workforce)
