In this lesson you will learn: • How the oil formed.• Where the oil produced.• The Refining Process of the oil (Petroleum). • The fuels that made from oil.• Products made from petroleum.

How the oil formed.

Oil was formed from the remains of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago in a marine environment before the dinosaurs. Over millions of years, the remains of these animals and plants were covered by layers of sand and silt. Heat and pressure from these layers helped the remains turn into what we today call crude oil. The word "petroleum" means "rock oil" or "oil from the earth."

Where the oil produced.

About 100 countries produce crude oil and; the top five producing countries in 2010 are:• Saudi Arabia (13%)• Russia (12%)• United States (9%)• Iran (5%)• China1 (5%)

The Refining Process of the oil (Petroleum).

After crude oil is removed from the ground, it is sent to a refinery by pipeline, ship, or barge. Refining breaks crude oil down into its various components, which then are selectively reconfigured into new products. All refineries perform three basic steps:

1. Separation

2. Conversion

3. Treatment
