The client operates several refineries across Canada and the United States supplying industrial, retail, and commercial consumers. The company is also one of the largest Canadian retailers of petroleum products. The Challenge The client was faced with the challenge of detecting hydrocarbon leaks in their major oil and gas pipelines. Hydrocarbon leaks are a global problem and can occur at all levels of the oil & gas supply chain including oil & gas rigs, pipelines, refineries, and processing plants. Although the existing leak detection (LD) technologies can marginally address the market demand, there are still technological and economical barriers to the implementation of an effective solution, especially in critical locations such as pipelines passing near public areas, public infrastructure, and sensitive areas such as rivers and lakes (called “Critical Areas”) which are typically short distance (a few hundred meters to 2 km). Existing LD methods rely on secondary parameters, i.e., detection of leak through acoustics or temperature effects which can create “False Positive Error”. Moreover, the existing distributed sensing solutions are not economically efficient for short distance monitoring.

Company IntroductionThe client is a Canadian integrated energy company based in Alberta that specializes in the production of synthetic crude from oil sands.

While conventional fiber optic leak detection technologies rely on acoustic or thermal effects, AOMS fiber optic sensors directly detect hydrocarbon molecules which eliminate the chance of “False Positive Errors”. AOMS also provided the client with a fully integrated system including data acquisition, cloud data services, and analytics run on the Lumi software platform. LumiAPM allowed an on-premise hardwired connection to the client’s SCADA system for alarm triggering.

The Result As a result of the client using AOMS LumiAPM solution, they have been able to monitor a 175m pipeline. Data collection occurs every 5 seconds with real-time analytics available in the Lumi dashboard. for accurate and instant detection of any oil leak. AOMS used a reliable LTE cellular connectivity to synchronize the pipeline health data in the cloud. All in all, LumiAPM proved to be an economic solution for short distance asset monitoring.
