Oil, Gas, and Thermal Wells Drilled or Permittedin Columbia Plateau, Central Washington, 1912 through 1987

This map and the accompanying overlays were produced pursuant to WorkDirective 009 under Task Order 002 of Interagency Agreement NRC-02-85-004.In this Work Directive, the NRC directed the Bureau of Mines to furnish amap showing oil, gas, and thermal wells drilled or permitted in Yakima,Klickitat, Kittitas, Benton, Walla Walla, Grant, Lincoln, and AdamsCounties, Washington. Further, Work Directive 009 specified that the map beof appropriate scale to show well locations and other identifyinginformation as well as traces of completed and proposed seismic lines. Themap and overlays were drafted at a scale of 1:250,000.

The map, overlays, and accompanying text, like its predecessor, 'Oil and GasDrilling in Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln, and Nye Counties, Nevada--1920Through 19865 (Work Directive 006), was produced by the Bureau of Mines'Western Field Operations Center using published and unpublished dataprovided by State and Federal agencies and the private sector. Thesesources of information include:

1. Base map and seismic trace data: Provided by W. E. Mays and Associates,Mineral Landmen, Land Title Building, 105 W. 5th Avenue, Suite 106,Ellensburg, WA 98926.

Seismic line traces are identified by company name (as a two letter codeexplained on the overlay) and include the year permitted. Company namesfollowed by an 'R' in parentheses indicate the associated line trace is aline of record (i.e. permitted) and may have been 1) completed according tothe permitted trace, 2) completed with minor directional modifications tothe permitted trace, 3) held in abeyance, or 4) abandoned. Although somelines of record appear to be inconclusive or ambiguous (i.e. lack companyname and/or year), their inclusion was deemed necessary as an indication ofthe recent level of exploration activity in the Columbia Plateau.

An '0' in parentheses following the company name indicates the line wascompleted and observed in the field.

Line traces not designated 'R' or '0' indicate status unknown; traceslacking a company code or year indicates the data were unavailable.

2. Oil and gas well data: Provided in most part by the Washington Divisionof Geology and Earth Resources in WOGER Information Circular 75, Oil and GasExploration in Washington. 1900-1982 (with supplementary data for wellsdrilled or permitted 1983-1986).

Data pertaining to the Darcell-Western Exploration No. 1 wildcat well inWalla Walla County (permitted in 1987) was obtained from the WashingtonGeologic Newsletter V. 15, No. 3. July 1987, pp. 12-14.

3. Thermal well data: Thermal well locations and other well data wereobtained from:

4. Major structural folds: Structural information was obtained from:

Basic information pertaining to the hydrocarbon and thermal wells ispresented on their respective overlay. A more extensive compilation of thedata is included in the following tables.

EXPLANATION

I - Township

R - Range

QQS - Quarter-quarter section

QS - Quarter section

Sec - Section

BHT - Bottom-hole temperature

Gradient A - Straight-line gradient observed on a well log over a depthinterval of several tens of meters

Gradient B - Calculated from well depth and the difference between bottom-holetemperature and estimated mean surface temperature of 120 C

Sources of thermal well information:

1. Well data that include depth and geothermal gradient were provided byWashington Division of Geology and Earth Resources. Geothermal "esources ofWashington. Geo. Map GM-25, 1981, Olympia, WA.

2. Balance of the data were provided by Bloomquist, R. G. and others.Evaluation and Ranking of Geothermal Resources for Electrical Generation orElectrical Offset in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. U. S. Dept. ofEnergy, Bonneville Power Admin. DOE/BP-13609-3, 1985, Portland, OR
