The removal of acidic components (primarily H2S and CO2) from hydrocarbon streams can be broadly categorized as those depending on chemical reaction, or adsorption.

Processes employing each of these techniques are described. The principle process stream is the removal of the acid gases by counter flowing contact with an amine solution, commonly known as Amine Gas Sweetening.

The acidic components removed are termed acid gas streams (containing H2S,) and may be flared, incinerated, or converted to elemental sulphur in a Sulphur Recovery Unit. Various Sulphur Recovery processes (primarily The Modified Claus Process) are discussed.

Accurate measurements of routine and special (RCAL&SCAL) rock properties using core analysis and well logging reveal good evidence of hydrocarbon presence, reservoir storage capacity and flow capability. When oil companies drill a well, approximately 130,000 gallons of water are required. This quantity is dwarfed when during well stimulation, water usage increases to 2.5 million gallons. During production, water injection or flooding increases the well pressure and enhances oil recovery from 30% of the oil in place to as much as 50%. The water used during these operations is required to be of a certain quality, however the importance of proper water treatment is often underestimated. This is due to the tremendous variation in the water sources used i.e. seawater, borehole and river water. Poor water quality, may lead to clogging of the reservoir and loss of oil production particularly during well stimulation and water injection.

For every barrel of crude produced 7-10 barrels of water are produced, reusing it is vital for reducing the quantity of water used during the reservoirs lifetime. Produced water contains some oil and its treatment to an environmentally acceptable level is mandatory before disposal. Good oil and water separation is therefore necessary and the physics as well as the mechanics of proper oil and water separation need to be well understood not only for water reuse but also to meet these strict environmental discharge regulations. The methods most commonly employed for oil water separations, include gravity settling and gas flotation. Flotation depends on the surface characteristics of the oil and on its interaction with the gas bubbles. The method used depends on many factors including the type and physical and chemical characteristics of the crude oil ultimately however the governing principle of these separations is dictated by Stokes law.

This course is designed to provide design aspects required for successful water flooding plus main reasons for failures. It presents a comprehensive coverage of analytical and applied aspects of water flooding including rock and fluid properties, theory, prediction methods of Stiles, Craig-Geffen-Morse, and Dykstra-Parsons, surface production facilities, and water flood problems and optimization. Water affects every stage of oilfield life from exploration through development, production, and finally to abandonment.

The course covers process description, pattern selection, injectivity issues, and design’s procedure. Furthermore, the course provides all components of produced water analysis and its required chemical treatment unit. It describes important measurements of water flooding to identify main problems, examine treatments and provide solutions. Actual field cases for optimum application will be explained with in-class exercises.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATION

CANCELLATIONS & SUBSTITUTIONS

You must notify the Registrar of cancellations at least 2 weeks before a scheduled seminar in order to be eligible for a credit. If you cannot attend, you may send a replacement from your organisation at no charge. There is a $250 handling charge for all cancellations or rescheduling.
