On Saturday, April 26 several hundred people attended the VIP Grand Opening party for the new Burloak Kelsey’s restaurant, all in aid of the Canadian Angelman Syndrome Society (CASS). CASS is the national charity that provides a support network for families learn- ing to cope with Angelman Syndrome — a genetic disor- der caused by an abnormality of the 15th chromosome. The condition causes a significant physical and cognitive developmental delay which is very severe making inde- pendent life impossible. Angelman syndrome is not well known due to two main factors: (1) the syndrome is a new genetically diagnosed syndrome and (2) the low occur- rence rate. CASS is a very small charity that receives min- imal funding, but serves many families across Canada. The Angelman network is headed by Heidi Blackburn of Oakville and several "angels" live in the Oakville- Burlington area. The community branch offices located in Oakville, Milton and Burlington will remain unchanged. The move will allow the council to serve the entire region with effi- ciency and combined skills, experi- ence and knowledge. Red Cross branch council mem- bers play an advisory role to branch staff and volunteers in assessing com- munity needs, monitoring service delivery and supporting local fundrais- ing and public relations activities.
