Welcome

**BREAKING NEWS**All IHLA Convention registrants, who have completed their registration by December 31, 2011, will be eligible to win a pair of ticket packages to attend the 2012 Super Bowl, February 5 in Indianapolis, courtesy of Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company.

Josh Bleill – A Hero’s Story Josh Bleill, the author of the autobiography “One Step at a Time,” had both legs amputated after a roadside bomb explosion that occurred while he was in Fallujah, Iraq and riding in his military Humvee. Bleill went through intensive physical therapy and vowed not to return home to Indiana until he could walk off the plane. With determination and prosthetic legs, he returned home walking.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay met Bleill while he was recovering, and made good on a promise to give Bleill a job with the Colts once he recovered. He now represents them through their community relations department.

You are guaranteed to never look at your problems the same way again after hearing and meeting Marine Corporal Josh Bleill.

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Environmental Policies, Trade and the U.S. Hardwood Industry

Presented by: Michael Snow, Executive Director, American Hardwood Export Council

Exports have never been more important to our industry, yet from “green building” schemes and environmental procurement policies to Illegal logging legislation, the hardwood industry is

facing unprecedented changes to the way business is being conducted around the world. Too often, however, we look at these policies as obstacles or constraints when they actually have the potential of providing a major boost to our industry, if we are prepared. This presentation will take a look at the myriad of environmental policies facing US exporters around the world, and how new tools such as Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and the proactive demonstration of negligible risk of illegal logging will be key to maintaining and expanding market share for US hardwoods around the world and in the U.S.

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. What’s Bugging You?

Presented by: Philip T. Marshall, Forest Health Specialist & State Entomologist, Indiana Department of Natural Resources

What are the “bugs” that are impacting the forest resource you need to sustain your timber business? Besides exotic pests such as Emerald Ash Borer, you will learn about Thousand Canker Disease of Black Walnut, Gypsy Moth, Asian Longhorned Beetle, Powderpost Beetles and the cousins of EAB that are a threat to white and red oaks. The presentation will also discuss quarantines and their impact on your business.

Mr. Marshall has been the Forest Health Specialist since 1974 and is very familiar with the insects and diseases impacting Indiana’s forest resources. Serving since 2008 has state entomologist he also handles the regulation of exotic forest pests as well as other regulated pests.
