COUNTY 4-H UPDATE Demonstration and Marketing Contests Anyone interested in competing for this contest at the Ohio State Fair needs register by Monday, July 8 by calling the Extension office. Provide the member’s name, club and topic. The classes are individual or team demonstration (with or without computer technology), note card design, and infomercial videos. The Ohio State Fair 4-H Communication Days are July 31 and August 1. The rules are at http://www.ohio4h.org/families/ohio-state-fair/state-fair-non-livestock-4-h-guidebook (click on Communication Days). Foods & Clothing Summer and Fair Judging Summer judging events in clothing and nutrition projects determine the award winners Delaware County Fair. State Fair participants are selected at summer judging. Details are at http://delaware.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-development/summer-judging. If you cannot attend the judging on July 20th, you can attend a make-up judging on September 7th for grade and fair premium. Clothing Judging is Saturday, July 20 at the Extension Office. Instructions to sign up for a specific judging time are on the enclosed buff flyer. Registration opens on July 1st. The Style Revue is 4:30 PM, Saturday, July 20 in the Extension office basement meeting room. Anyone not judged on July 20th can have their projects judged the Saturday, September 7th, however they are not eligible for awards. Food Fair is Saturday, July 20 at the Extension Office. Instructions to sign up for a specific judging time are on the enclosed gold flyer. Registration opens on July 1st. The Project Presentation is required for all food and nutrition projects, including make-up judging. It is used as the Delaware County Fair exhibit. Make-up judging DOES qualify an exhibitor for the Baked Goods Auction contest if they receive an “A”. Food awards will be presented

Saturday, July 20 at about 5:30 PM (following the Style Revue) at the Extension office in the basement meeting room. A clinic for state fair delegates will take place following the awards. Still Exhibit Summer Judging - July 20 Many non-livestock projects have the opportunity to participate in the Ohio State Fair. The 2019 Family Guide indicates a rosette by projects that are eligible for the Ohio State Fair at the back of the booklet. We can send a couple of exhibitors in each project. Selection of state fair delegates is Saturday, July 20 at the Extension Office. Instructions on how to sign up for a specific judging time are on the enclosed pink flyer. Registration opens on July 1st. This information is also posted at http://delaware.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-development/summer-judging Those interested in trying for state fair should have completed their project book and exhibit by the July 20th judging date. State Fair rules are at http://www.ohio4h.org/families/ohio-state-fair/state-fair-non-livestock-4-h-guidebook. Some exhibit requirements for State Fair are very specific and do not follow our county fair requirements. It is very important to review the rules on the above website. State Fair delegates will have an awards program and receive registration materials at about 5:30 PM, Saturday, July 20 at Extension Office (following the Style Revue).

State Fair Livestock, Rabbit, Poultry & Dog Entries – June 20 State Fair Rules for Junior Livestock shows can be found and entries can be made at https://ohiostatefair.com/livestock Hard copy entries for 4-H livestock and rabbit entries must be signed by Extension staff. Online entries are encouraged. The online deadline for entering junior fair livestock is midnight June 20. Exhibitors active in 4-H must provide the name of the 4-H Professional (this is listed as agent on the online registration form) in their county. For Delaware County you will list Jacci Smith or Laryssa Hook. FFA hard copy entries must be signed by your FFA advisor, or you will list their name for the online entry. If you turn in hard copies, bring your 4-H livestock entries to the office for signature on or before June 20. Entries must be postmarked by June 20. Exhibitors are responsible for mailing their entries. State Fair Dog Poster Entries – July 1 Ohio 4-H Dog Poster entries must be postmarked by July 1 and sent to Ohio 4-H Dog Entry, Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Dr., Columbus, Ohio 43210. Entries must be signed by Extension staff prior to July 1. Exhibitors are responsible for mailing their entries. Clothing & Quilting Project Help – June 8, 22, 29 & July 6 Master Clothing Educators and adult volunteers will be on hand to help you with your project. Bring your sewing equipment, fabric and pattern. Fabric must be washed and pressed so it is ready to cut out. Lamb & Goat Open Scales - July 9 Want a mid-point weight of your lamb or goat? We are having an open scales on Tuesday, July 9 from 5-6:30 PM in the Pig & Lamb Barn at the fairgrounds.

Goat Clinic – July 7 Bring your goat and practice showmanship skills! The clinic starts at 2 PM on Sunday, July 7 in the Pig & Lamb Barn at the Delaware County Fairgrounds. This clinic is hosted by the Delaware County 4-H Goat Committee. Market Chicken Order Deadline June 24 Chicks for meat pens must be ordered and pre-paid through our office in order to show at the fair. An order form was sent to members taking the Market Chicken project (#150CM) letting them know to order chicks by June 24. Payment is due with the order form and checks should be made out to the RPSA Committee.

Delaware Co 4-H Endowment Campaign Again this year, the Ohio 4-H Foundation will match up to $1000 of donations made to our county 4-H endowment. The 4-H Committee earns the interest off this account for the lifetime of our county program and 100% of it stays in Delaware County 4-H. To donate funds make your club check to The Ohio State University Foundation. In the memo line put fund #601622 Delaware Co. 4-H Endowment. Send check to State 4-H Office, Beth Frey, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, Columbus OH 43210 or turn them into our office and we will send them down. 4-H Alumni Ice Cream Social – June 23 Join 4-H families and friends to help celebrate 100 years of Delaware County 4-H. The event is 1-3 PM, Sunday, June 23 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds near the Merchants Building. There will be food trucks with self-pay ice cream and lunch items available. We will have free activities for all ages. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket. Come visit with other 4-H families!

4-H Day at The Strand – July 21 Hold the date of July 21 for a 4-H Day at The Stand Theater in Delaware. Details will be coming out on social media and email in mid-June.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES Delaware County Fair Community Service Projects The Delaware County Fair can use volunteer work groups who are looking for community service projects. There may be painting or weeding projects on the ever-changing to-do list. To see what is on the current to-do list, contact the fair office at 740-362-3851. They will work with you to set a date and work out details.

One specific event they need help with is to spruce up the fairgrounds with flowers. On Monday, July 29, community volunteers will plant annual flowers left from the MG Plant Sale. Meet at 9:30 AM in in the Coliseum to get started. Bring gloves and small shovels to dig holes. They typically work till at least noon. Beds will include the Sr. Fair office, Coliseum, Merchant’s Building and Arts & Crafts. Any amount of time that you can spare during this time frame to help is appreciated. Ohio 4-H Member Opportunities and Discounts Offered Ohio 4-H’ers are eligible for many discounts throughout the year for various events and venues. These discounts are posted at http://www.ohio4h.org/families/members/opportunities-and-more. There are also many state camps, special events and other opportunities available. The above website has links to these events. Check it out! Benefit in the Barn – August 17 Enjoy a celebration of agriculture on the farm and music by the Central Ohio Symphony and the Olentangy Liberty Varsity Chorale, with proceeds benefitting partners of the Delaware County Hunger Alliance. Delaware & Union County Farm Bureau Organizations are hosting the event at Gar-Mar Farms, 6040 Dublin Road, Delaware.

Dinner begins at 6 PM and the music begisn at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $35 ($30 for Farm Bureau Members) and can be purchased online at BenefitInTheBarn.org. A cash bar will feature Ohio craft beer and wine. Bring a lawn chair for open seating in the barn. Call Delaware County Farm Bureau at 740-363-1613 with questions. Master Gardener Plant Sale The Delaware County Master Gardeners will conduct their annual plant sale on Saturday, July 27 from 9 AM – 3 PM and Sunday, July 28 from 6 AM to 1 PM. There are great prices on late season shrubs, trees, perennials, and annuals. Come early for best selection.

Delaware Co. Junior Fair Royalty Contest Each club can enter one nominee in each division: Jr. Princess (13-15), Queen (16-18) and King (13-18). Applications and a letter with contest details will be mailed soon to all organizational advisors. Applications are due by 4:30 PM, July 8 to the Extension office. The Delaware County Junior Fair Royalty Contest changed the method for selecting royalty last year. Interviews will be scheduled the afternoon of July 18 at the Extension office. The Coronation Ceremony will be 4:30 PM, Saturday, September 14 in the Show Arena. Questions can be directed to your organizational advisor or to Bev Tidd, Jr. Fair Coordinator at 740-833-2034. Livestock and Still Exhibit Make-up Judging Those with conflicts for the Saturday, September 7 judging can participate in make-up judging from 3-5 PM, Sunday, August 25 at the Extension office. For Still Exhibits, they can also use summer judging as a make-up opportunity. To receive the grade exhibit premium, members must bring their project to the fair for exhibit. The 2019 Fair Handbook details exhibit drop off times in the rules for each department.

DCF FAIR INFORMATION 2019 Summary of Changes Animal Changes

• Release times for Beef, Market Goats, Rabbits, and Poultry is now 6 PM on Wednesday

• Animals that are brought to the fairgrounds must be entered in the fair

• Beef fitting and grooming and showmanship show is now 6 PM on Sunday

• Alpaca and Llama Show is now 4:30 PM on Saturday, September 14

• Exhibitor meeting and weigh-in times on Saturday, September 14 have changed for pigs, lambs, and goats

o Pigs 9:00 AM o Lambs 11:30 AM o Goats 12:30 PM

• The Champion and Res Champion Pen of 2 lambs will sell as a lot rather than 2 separate sheep

• Market Goats must be dehorned • Market Hogs will be evenly broke into divisions after weigh-

in has occurred. There is no longer set weights for light, middle, or heavy weight division

• All rabbits need to be tattooed in the LEFT ear • Dogs have several changes in obedience classes. Class

progression is now Beginner Novice A, Pre-Novice A, Pre-Novice B, Novice A, Novice B, Graduate Novice, Open, Graduate Open, Utility.

Still Exhibit Changes • Baked Goods Auction class divisions will be based on age

instead of grade. Junior classes are for 4-H age 13 and younger. Senior classes are for 4-H age 14 and older.

• All events that reference the location as the Junior Fair Building will be in the Coliseum this year

• Booth theme is “100 Years of 4-H”. We are in the process of determining how booths will be constructed. There will not be hard walls between the booths. For your club planning purposes, things in the booth will need to be self-supported. We will have more details in July. If you want to be part of the team that comes up with the plan, contact Laryssa at [email protected]. We need to have something that stores compactly, is economical, and self-supporting.

DCF FAIR INFO CONTINUED Check-In Procedure For Animals At Fair Again this year, most animals have specific check-in times. Please check the enclosed Junior Fair Schedule for these times. Families will need to plan hauling animals to fair around these times. There will be a pen/stall/cage form for parents and exhibitors to sign prior to penning their animals. More information will be in the Come to Fair Newsletter later this summer.

Rabbit Tattooing All rabbits shown in the Rabbit Show at the Delaware County Fair must have a tattoo in the left ear. Tattooing is offered by the committee during judging on Saturday, September 7 for $1 per rabbit. Livestock and Animal Interview Judging Information about this judging is enclosed and is posted at http://delaware.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-development/fair.

4-H COMMITTEE GARAGE SALE

4-H Committee Garage Sale – June 21 & 22 The Delaware County 4-H Committee will again do a Garage Sale as one of their main fundraisers. They are seeking help in the form of volunteer workers and item donations. Workers are the most critical thing we need to make this a success! Help is needed with handling drop off, pricing, and working the sale.
