Ana Avda DeKudsha Brich Hu - I am a servant of the Holy Blessed One. (Torah service)

To be a servant of God is a great honor, and several times in the Torah, Moses is given the honor of being

called a servant of God. Moses served God through his leadership of the Jewish people. Upon God’s

command, Moses took our people out of Egypt, brought them to Mt. Sinai, helped to teach them Torah, and

cared for them in the wilderness. Moses served God by being a leader for our people.

In Judaism, leadership is about service. The Talmud relates that when Rabban Gamliel was appointing two

of his students to be leaders of the community, he told them, “It is not authority that I am giving to you, but

rather servitude, as it says in scripture, ‘If you will be a servant to this people this day.’ (1 Kings

12:7)” (Horayot 10a-b)

In Judaism, being a leader is about serving others. Leaders must listen to the community, trying to determine

the community’s needs. Leaders must guide the community toward a good future, and they must provide for

the needs of the individuals in the present.

We are now preparing to enter the month of Elul, the month before the High Holidays. During this time we

are asked to do an accounting of our behavior in our relationships with God and people. This year, in

addition to taking an account of ourselves, let us take into account the many ways in which the leaders of

OZS serve our community.

Our board represents our community, helping OZS to stay strong and flourish. Our committees help to

infuse OZS with activity and vitality. Our teachers guide our adults and children so that we may open our

hearts to Torah. Our staff makes it possible for our synagogue to function and serve the members of our

community.

We have so many leaders in our community, and each of them have given their time and effort to serve us.

As we are grateful to our ancestors who led us throughout the generations, so may we be grateful to our

leaders at OZS. After 100 years of service, new leaders continue to step up to guide our OZS community.

Let us celebrate their service, and honor their commitment.

During Chutzpah 2013, among many worthy activities of the day, we will have a special opportunity to

welcome our incoming board and to say thanks to those who are concluding their terms of service. Let us

join together to express our gratitude and appreciation to the leaders of our community.

Following the words of Moses to Joshua, we can wish all our leaders:

I want to personally invite everyone to attend OZS on Sunday, August 18. Chutzpah 2013 will include installation

of our new Board, our annual Congregational meeting, Bi-annual awards, followed by a delicious brunch.

Reservations are essential so we may ensure enough food for everyone. Call the office today to RSVP. If you

haven’t already returned the many forms that OZS recently sent, you can also take this opportunity to beat the

deadline for your High Holiday volunteer response, Religious School registration, and your OZS directory

information. Also, you can meet our new Office Administrator Lisa, the helpful voice you may have spoken to

when calling the synagogue. She will be happy to help you update your OZS file to include any birthday or

anniversary dates, Hebrew names, yartzheit listing, and new email addresses. She can also assist you with

donations or Kiddush lunch dates.

Our board has worked diligently this past month to address many areas of our physical structure and grounds that

required attention. Expenditures of up to $45,000 were approved and work has begun in a variety of areas.

The long awaited kitchen renovation is underway including a new range, shelves and storage racks,

degreasing and painting. Everyone will want to give the new kitchen a try by hosting a Kiddush lunch.

Most August dates are already reserved. Contact the office to reserve your special occasion date for fall or

later in the year.

The late June rain caused yet another deluge of water inside our building. The basement storage area has

now been cleaned out and new shelving is being installed. Roof repairs and drainage solutions should be

completed by late fall.

A more secure and user friendly entry door for Gan Shalom is being installed.

Did you know we have over 120 trees on our property? Some of our trees have not fared very well the past

few years. Unfortunately the Ash Borer has showed up requiring us to treat a few of the trees to hopefully

save them. Removal of diseased trees and trimming the remaining ones will help begin the New Year with a healthier landscape. If you would like to join in the discussion of grounds beautification, please let the

office know so you will be notified of those meetings.

Special thanks to our Treasurer Mike Ades. Together we have spent a huge amount of time to get bids on

all these major expenditures as well as additional building repairs.

Although most of my message has focused on OZS physical improvements, Community is our most valuable asset

at OZS. We strongly rely on everyone volunteering to help with some aspect of the High Holidays. Please answer

the call to be a reader at services, an usher, help with the break fast, open your home to a visitor or potential new

member for a holiday celebration, offer to drive someone to shul, help clean up our grounds, or sound your shofar.

Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee (Brian Derer, Debi Gall, Dusty Embury and Katy Miller) talked about some

great ideas for new Social Action mitzvot we can do next year in addition to Faith Feeds and the God's Pantry

Backpack program for Mary Todd Elementary. Some ideas include doing a blood drive, a book drive for the

International Book Project, helping with Reforest the Bluegrass, and helping at the Chrysallis House. But we

want your ideas so we can work with your skills and interests! Please contact Lisa Satin at 338-3740 or at
