OLYMPIA — Toxic materialsare especially harmful to children.
They eat, drink and breathemore than adults in relation totheir body size, the stateDepartment of Health said.
That means they are at greaterrisk for health problems from toxicchemicals.
Keeping indoor air healthy• Keep your home and car
smoke-free and never smoke nearchildren.
Second-hand smoke increasesthe risk of heart disease, lungcancer and asthma, and is linked toSudden Infant Death Syndrome.
• Keep wood smoke out.Replace older wood stoves withcleaner gas, pellet or certified woodstoves.
• Keep it clean. Vacuum anddust regularly. Dust using a wet ragand use a vacuum with a HEPAfilter if you can. Dust particles may
contain toxic chemicals.• Keep mold away. Mold can
grow in wet places. Repair waterleaks and dry wet areas right away.Prevent moisture by using kitchenand bathroom fans that vent to theoutdoors.
• Keep it aired out. Air out yourwhole house regularly. Fresh airreduces the concentration ofcontaminants.
• Prevent carbon monoxidepoisoning. Never use gasoline-powered equipment or burncharcoal inside. Never use a gasoven to heat your home. Install acarbon monoxide detector.

• Eat fish low in mercury. Somefish have less mercury than others.Good choices are salmon, cod, flounder, trout, tilapia and cannedlight tuna.
• Let tap water run. When watersits in pipes, it may pick up leadand other metals. Flush pipes byrunning cold water.
• Use cold water. Use only coldwater for drinking, cooking andmaking baby formula since hotwater may contain higher levels oflead. (Municipalities issue yearlywater quality reports.)
• Test private well water. If youown a private well, test yourdrinking water every year forcoliform bacteria and nitrate.Consider testing for arsenic.
Use householdproducts safely
• Household products, such ascleaners and bug killers, can causehealth problems.
• Follow the instructions on thelabel.
• Keep products out of the reachof children.
• Avoid products labeled“danger” or “poison.”
• Avoid using bug killer and“weed and feed” products.
• Use safer options when youcan. More information is atecy.wa.gov/toxicfreetips.
Use plastics wisely
• Some plastic bottles, cups, containers, toys and pacifiers aremade with the chemicals biphenolA (BPA) and phthalates. They maybe toxic when released by heat orwhen the product is scratched.
• Choose food and beveragecontainers that are BPA-free, suchas glass or stainless steel.
• Avoid putting hot liquids orfoods into plastic food containers.
• Avoid putting plastics in themicrowave or dishwasher.
• Avoid cooking or storing foodand beverages in plasticsmarked with recyclingcodes 3, 6 and 7.
Prevent leadpoisoning
• Lead and dust chipsfrom paint in homes andbuildings constructedbefore 1978 are thebiggest sources of leadexposure.
• Wash toys, pacifiersand bottles often withsoap and water to reduceexposure to dust andchips.
• Vacuum and dampdust regularly.
• Keep children away
from peeling paint.• Remove shoes when going
inside to avoid tracking in soil thatmay contain lead and other toxics.
• Use lead-safe work practiceswhen renovating or doing homerepairs on paint that may containlead.

OMAK — Need something tokeep your little one occupied?Whip up a batch of finger paint orplay dough.
Finger paint No. 1Mix 2 cups flour and 2
teaspoons salt. Add 2 1/2 cups coldwater and stir until smooth.Gradually add 2 cups boiling water.Boil until smooth and thick, stirring constantly. Add foodcoloring and stir until smooth.Cool.
Play doughMix together in a medium, non-
stick pot:1 cup white flour1/4 cup salt2 Tbs. cream of tartarCombine and add:1 cup cold water
2 tsp. food coloring (may omit)1 Tbs. cooking oilCook over medium heat,
stirring constantly, for 3-5minutes. It will look globby. Whenit forms a ball in the pot, removefrom heat and turn out on a lightlyfloured surface. Knead briefly.
Cool and store in an airtightcontainer (a cottage cheese ormargarine tub will hold it) or azippered plastic bag. It is edible, but
not tasty. It keeps, unrefrigerated, for several weeks.
Be sure to provide plenty ofcookie cutters, a rolling pin, plasticknives, bottle caps and other itemsfor cutting and shaping.
This dough cleans up well. If abit of it does dry on a surface, pickor chip off as much as possible, then remove the rest with a damprag or non-abrasive scrubber. If it’sleft uncolored, it won’t stain.
