5M Office of the Mayor

October 8, 2007

To Whom It May Concern:

It's with great enthusiasm I write this 'letter of endorsement for Ogden's Hollowgraphic Ice Tower. This project bears great potential for our community on several fronts. First of all, it really is in perfect alignment with Ogden's "high adventure recreation" theme. We believe we are unique in the world in relationship to all of the recreation and natural amenities that exist so close to an urban center.

We have a beautiful new Salomon High Adventure Recreation Center in our new downtown mall that features a wind tunnel, for indoor skydiving, an indoor surf wave and the largest climbing wall in the State. As far as we know, there is nothing like it in the country. This center is designed to create a compliment to the outdoor recreation that we also have in abundance. The Hollowgraphic Ice Tower fits into this perfectly because it will also be the only outdoor refrigerated tower in the world. People that will travel or move here to kayak, skydive or rock climb year-round will also be able to enjoy the unique adventure sport of ice climbing.

It also has great potential for the youth of our community, especially the under-served. It's been our experience that one of the ways to "open up the world" to the disadvantaged is to help them realize that they have the ability to do amazing things. Some of the programs that Jeff lowe, who will direct the operation of the tower, will sponsor for these groups will help them realize if they can climb a SO' tower of ice, opportunities for achievement for them personally abound.

The Ice Tower will also provide opportunities for more sporting events and tourism to come to Utah and specifically Ogden. Jeff is a world famous ice climber and created several successful ice climbing festival events. The Ice Tower will provide a forum for him to create more successful climbing events here, including programs for people with various handicaps, such as those he has planned in conjunction with the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind, and the Utah chapter of the MS Society (lowe himself has MS).

I hope you will favorably consider sponsorship of Ogden's Holographic Ice Tower. If I can provide more detail, insight or perspective please call me. I'm excited and anxious to see this project move forward. The City is contributing significantly to this project and we would be grateful to have you join us as we make it a reality.

Sincerely,

/VVf~/f-~

Matthew R. Godfrey

Mayor of Ogden

Dear Friends,

Children love to climb, it's a natural instinct. When they climb, they develop their muscles, their balance, their caordination, their f'exibility and their brains. It takes a creative mind for a toddler to place a footstool on a stack of newspapers, pull herself up high enough to flop over onto the countertop, then on tippy-toe reach high and grab the cookie jar off the top of the 1ridge! Many people never lose the urge to climb and explore, even as they grow older. Technical mountain climbing is just a more sophisticated and codified expression of that ancient urge.

I'm a native of Ogden, Utah and have been a mountain climber ever since my dad guided me up the Grand Teton at the age of seven, back in 1958. Over the years, I've worked as an instructor for Outward Bound, guided climbers around the world and run my own climbing school, among other things. I've witnessed the metamorphosis of a forty-year-old housewife into an avid tiger of the heights. I've seen inner city dope fiends kick drugs in favor of climbing rocks, and I've seen the joy on the faces ofkids of all stripes when they finally make it to the top of a climbing wall. The climbing experience offers something that's very hard to get in today's society, infatuated as it is with video games and reality TV-almost divorced from or afraid of the natural world and real physical challenge.

It is a real pleasure to be working with Ogden's Mayor, Mathew Godfrey, and his administration to bring high adventure sports, and the participants, to town. Together, we are constructing an ice climbing facility in the heart of the city. Ogden's Holographic Ice Tower™ is unique in that it will be the only freestanding refrigerated year-round ice climbing structure in the world. I have configured the Tower to be a teaching and learning facility, while also having the terrain to host national and international competitions. The Tower will meet its' energy requirements and achieve a carbon-neutral operating footprint through participating in Rocky Mountain Power Company's "Blue Sky" program, which supports development of wind-generated electricity.

Local and visiting climbers will use this facility. Courses and programs will be run for children and adults with special needs. Competitions and festivals will be hosted with far-reaching publicity for Tower sponsors and the City Of Ogden. The community in general will benefit from having a '70wer of Dreams", unlike any other venue, a place where people can personally experience the truth of these lines from French writer, Rene Daumal: "What is above, knows what is below. But what is below, does not know what is above. "

Sincerely,

gefA~
