to your ELA teacher to qualify for these courses) We are What we Eat! Ms. Poirier & Ms. Eisenbaum (Room 2028) 32 Students Think you know everything about nutrition? Think again! We are going to Whole Foods on North Avenue to discover what food is really made of. We will begin by listing what we know about nutrition before we leave. Next, we will take CTA (so be sure to bring $5 to cover your cost there and back) down to the whole foods on North Avenue. We will walk through the store and decide if the "healthy" options are as healthy as they seem. You are welcome to buy yourself a snack (so bring some money and hopefully pick a healthy one!) and then we will return to Ogden. To conclude, we will re-assess what we really think is healthy and discuss our findings. Space Exploration at The Adler Mr. Grey (Room 2007) 16 students Ever gaze up at the stars and want to know more about space? Ever want to ask space specialists about aliens and space travel? Ever want to just visit the Adler Planetarium? If so then come visit it November 16 with Mr. Grey and have your questions about space science, stars and planets answered. Please bring money for lunch and admission. $8 recommended. The tour may include trips to prominent landmarks such as Ping Tom Memorial Park and the Chinatown Gate, Mural, and Square. This tour will allow students to sample authentic

Chinese cuisine as well as experience Chinese culture firsthand. Shedd Aquarium Mr. Allmen & Mr. Schlegel (2034) 32 Students Come celebrate! The Shedd Aquarium is the proud home of a new baby beluga whale who has just been made available for public viewing. This baby girl is only 2 months old, but she already tips the scale at well over 200 pounds. Come to the aquarium to learn about the whales and the many other animals on display. Threadless T-Shirt Headquarters and Gallery Mr. Russo & Mr. McGinnis (Room 1009) 25 students Students will leave Ogden at 8:15 a.m. and walk to the Threadless T-Shirt Headquarters and gallery, located at 1250 W. Madison (Madison and Elizabeth). On the trip, students will speak to representatives from Threadless, who will explain both the creative and marketing process of their company. Students will then tour the offices and art gallery to get a sense of how creativity and business can coexist within a successful Chicago company. Fun With First Grade Ms. Feeney and Mr. Vaughan (Room 2036) 16 students Remember how much you loved first grade? Back to the time you were learning to read, creating crafts, writing whimsical stories, solving stupendous math problems, and remember how you looked up to everyone who entered your class? Well we are going back to first grade, but this time you get to be the teacher. Join me as we head to the East Campus to Mr. Vaughan’s room where you will be paired up with a small group of students eagerly awaiting your expertise. Have fun while you create crafts, read a new story and review skills with your new companions the day before our Thanksgiving break. This is your chance to be the role model you have always wanted in your life.

We will be hiking on both paved and unpaved paths through the Cook County Forest Preserves. Bring your hiking shoes (or at least supportive shoes you don't mind getting dirty and/or wet) a water bottle, and a camera. On Campus Course Offerings Louder than a Bomb: Spoken Word Poetry Mr. MacDonald & Mr. Lyles (Room 2024) 32 Students If you write poetry, rap, write lyrics, put your thoughts down on paper, or want to express yourself creatively, join us for this intensive spoken word poetry workshop. Participants will get the chance to reflect on their own life, their own stories, and their own experiences to create poetry that will be shared with their peers. During the end of our time, Kevin Coval, the Artistic Director of Young Chicago Authors, will join us. Kevin is the founder of the largest youth poetry festival Louder Than a Bomb and has performed his poetry all over the country and on HBO’s Def Jam Poetry. Any students interested in being a part of Ogden’s LTAB team this year should attend this seminar and have a piece ready to perform by the end of the session. Improving Your Interviewing Skills Mr. Pfaff & Ms. Gonzalez (Room 2017) 32 Students The course will focus on possible questions asked at an interview, proper responses to questions during an interview, proper attire for interviews, and other tips to promote positive and successful interviews. This course will be beneficial for job interviews, as well as college entrance interviews.

Dress & Impress: Fashion and Entrepreneurship Ms. Muñoz (Room 1003) 16 students Do you have a "passion for fashion" but you're not sure how to turn it into something more? Would you like to learn how you can use your love for trends to help you stand out? Join Ms. Muñoz and her special guest Vanessa Betance (fashion consultant and boutique owner) and learn about the many options available to you. There will be a special demonstration on how to "dress to impress" professionally. Creative Intro to Sign Language Ms. Michalski (1010) 16 students Love music, but can’t carry a note? Join us for an introductory course in American Sign Language (ASL) and learn how to sign some of your favorite songs. Throughout this course you’ll learn the basics of ASL’s unique grammar structure, practice the ASL alphabet, gain more insight into Deaf culture, and create and record a music video in ASL. No fees are required, just your willingness to try something new and practice your new sign skills. Creating the 'Zine Ms. Walker (Room 2026) 16 students This seminar will focus on the creation of an Ogden 'zine to be entered in to the Chicago 'Zine fest in March. We will take a look at zines from other schools and try and come up with a plan for how we will establish our 'zine focusing on social justice. Additionally, we will explore fundraising possibilities so that we can fund our awareness campaigns and our zine submission. Puzzle Party Mrs. Czarnecki (Ms. C) (Room 2001) 16 Students Do you like crossword puzzles and logic puzzles? Do you like jigsaw puzzles? During the puzzle party we will be solving various types of puzzles. We will even be creating our own jigsaw puzzles that students can take home. Japan and Culture Mr. Hipchen & Mr. Stone (Room 1004) 32 Students Join us as we take a virtual trip to Japan its sights and sounds, examining Japanese culture. We explore what is unique to Japan as well as what daily living is like with shared personal experiences of your teachers, video clips from Japan and a virtual walking tour of the Tokyo area, including some fun places like Ginza, Harajuku, Meiji Shrine, etc. We will make origami art hands-on, and finish the day watching a recent Japanese film.

College Planning Ms. Gardner & Ms. Lewandowski (Room 1022) Students 30 Are your always thinking of your future? Want to start planning it now? Concerned about how to pay for college? Join Ms. L and Ms. Gardner in utilizing search engines through, "What's Next Illinois?" and "Collegeboard" as well as specific scholarship websites to jump start your plans for life after high school. For current seniors, you can utilize your time completing applications!

Course Offerings Open to both Middle and High School Cheese Please: Exploring the World Through Its Cheeses (Room 2002) Mr. Noel 16 students Mr. Noel will give students a rare opportunity to explore the world through the flavor of cheese. Many different types of cheese will be available for sampling as we discover the rich traditions of France, Spain, Greece, the United States and other cheese making countries. Whether or not it’s a mild cow milk Cheddar from Wisconsin, or the rich and powerful Norwegian goat milk cheese, Gjetost, students will nibble their way across the globe and make connections to these countries through their stomachs. Note: Please be advised that many of the cheeses that students will sample will be strong in both flavor and smell and not for the faint of heart. All cheeses will be pasteurized. If you have any allergies to milk, are lactose intolerant or are easily frightened by the sight of a soft, runny cheese that may or may not walk up to you and smack you in the back of the nose, this seminar may not be for you. Introduction to Mosaic art Ms. Cabrera & Ms. Castellucci (Room 2019) 32 Students Have you ever wanted to know how to create a Mosaic with glass tiles? This is your chance! This beginners class with teach you the basic technique on cutting, gluing and grouting mosaic glass. I am looking for some talented and creative students who want to help beautify our school! Serious artists only please! Attention Training: Exploring ways to pay more and better attention Mr. Atler (Room 2018) 16 Students Have you ever found yourself daydreaming in class? Has a teacher ever told you to pay more attention? We are often told that we need to pay attention but rarely taught how to do it. In this workshop we will learn some ways to improve our attention-paying powers. We will also play several games from the world of improv and discuss how they can help us focus. We will go outside for a short walk (weather permitting) that will be unlike any walk you have ever taken before. You will see and taste a fruit that is guaranteed to be something you have never seen or tasted before. We will do some light, standing yoga

as well. This workshop is for everyone and anyone who is interested in learning more about how their mind works, whether you are easily distracted or not. Making Something from Nothing: Improvisation Mr. Madigan (Room 2022) 20 students How frightening would it be to be in front of a group of people and not know what you're going to say? What would you do? Well, you would improvise. Improvisation is the creation of scenes and comedy when you have nothing prepared. In this workshop, you will play games and develop scenes that will force you to think on your feet, accept what you have been given, and rely on your fellow performers. You will need a quick wit, an open-mind, and clothes that you can move around in. Scripts are unnecessary. Make your Move: Play Chess! Mr. Saines (Room 1011) 16 Students Chess, known as “The Game of Kings”, is a game that involves strategy, concentration, and deep thinking. Several studies have shown that Chess can improve test scores and grades for students of all ages. One more thing about Chess: It’s fun! If you are an expert, beginner, or someone who has always wanted to learn but has not yet gotten around to it, come join me! I’ll teach you how to play, and in no time you’ll be enjoying a game that will bring you countless hours of fun in the years to come! Og-ZEN YOU! Light Yoga Practice and Mandala Making Ms. Fenwick (Room 2010) 16 students Intrigued by yoga? Enjoy art making? This Zen experience is for you. We will begin our day by exploring some basic yoga “asanas” or postures and connect them to the rhythm of our breath or “pranayama.” We will also begin to develop a deeper awareness of our thoughts. Connecting the mind, body and breath helps us to direct our attention inward. The awareness we cultivate can assist us in becoming more reflective and open minded. Sounds like the IB Learner Profile, doesn’t it? Next, we will explore our creative energy using art supplies and create a mandala to take home. A mandala is the name for a symmetrical design often used as a focus for contemplation and meditation. Mandalas are found in most cultures and are often thought of as symbolic maps of the universe. Every Ogden International student needs a map! Create yours with a supportive group of peers. All you really need to have for this is workshop is a body, an open mind, and a bit of curiosity. But it is also helpful to have a pair of sweat pants, leggings, or shorts, and a t-shirt that's not too baggy. No special footgear is required because we will be barefoot. It would also be nice to bring an old towel to class with you to wipe down or clean-up. Reconstructing Lichtenstein Mr. Diedrich (Room 1012)

16 students Express your internal artist and discover the unique style of legendary pop-artist Roy Lichtenstein in this art workshop. We will be introduced to a variety of Lichtenstein’s art work and students will choose a piece to recreate as their own. Students will have the opportunity to mimic his style or reinvent some of his famous paintings techniques. We will grid the image and enlarge the work onto canvas. After it is enlarged on canvas, we use acrylic paint to create your own personal masterpieces! NCAA Tournament: Geography of the Tournament and March Mathness! Mr. Streit, Mr. Baker & Mr. Hoover (Gym) 40 Students Join three of Ogden's history teachers and basketball coaches as we discover the geography of the colleges and universities that make it to NCAA tournament. Successfully understanding where the 68 schools are located, will enter you into a 3 on 3 tournament in the Ogden West Gym. Hopefully at the end, your team will be cutting down the nets (not literally of course). We assume you love basketball and this tournament like us, but also understand that most of these schools play one game and then are done. If your team loses in the first or second game, you can earn a second chance by completing March Mathness, which will teach you about the probabilities involved in sports. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: LOVE FOR BASKETBALL, PROPER BASKETBALL ATTIRE, A GOOD ATTITUDE AND SPORTSMANSHIP! So you think you wanna learn how to dance? Mr. McCarthy (Cafeteria) 16 students We will explore several dance steps including but not limited to line dancing, swing dance, the cha-cha and Broadway style dancing. Gigantes, Cabezudos y Vejigantes Sr. Espejo (Room 2014) 16 students Have you ever heard about cabezudos or vejigantes? Do you like Carnaval? Ogden is going to celebrate Carnaval in February but there is a lot to do! Come and learn about this incredible celebration in the Spanish-speaking countries and practice your Spanish. We will be buidling some "cabezudos" and other typical items. Be ready to get your hands dirty with glue and some paint! French Cinema Ms. Post (Room 1007) 25 students Students will explore different facets of French culture through viewing a French film and culminating in a discussion and analysis. We will discuss genre, characters, point of

view, and sound. Highly recommended to those who want to improve their French pronunciation, vocabulary, and listening skills. However, anyone interested in discovering the intricacies of French culture is welcomed!
