On the last week of September, I will be back. My study leave and sabbatical will be an opportunity for me to spend some time with my husband in Ohio, my family in Thailand, and my son and his wife in California. I will be able to visit other churches that are trying, as we are, to em- brace all people with God’s love and grace. I’ll learn from these congregations, and then come back and share my find- ings. I want to look at the best practices of churches that do an excellent job of welcoming people with true hospitality, and then return to OPC with some fresh ideas for ministry here. I also want to take a break and enjoy some rest and renewal. Jesus knows I need it. The first followers of Jesus are an awful lot like ourselves… working long hours, coming and going, with no chance to even sit down and grab a bite! So Jesus said, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31) They accept the invitation of Jesus, and escape by boat to a deserted place. Jesus grasps something that today’s best thinkers are only beginning to understand: decomposition takes time. The mak- ing of good, rich, life-giving compost, for example, takes time. You can’t hurry compost for the same reason you can’t hurry love. In the same way, grandchildren take time, learning a foreign language takes a long time, the testing of new drugs takes time, and vacations that truly enable us to rest, relax, and recreate take time. That’s why I’m taking a sabbati- cal: decomposition takes time. I need to decompose/decompress a bit if I’m going to come back here full of nutrients that the church needs for health and growth. I am hoping that my sabbatical will help me to recover an important element of spiritual truth that I am valu- able simply because I exist, as a child of God. My value doesn’t come from preaching sermons, writing articles, or administrating or moderating the Session. I am valuable because I exist, as one of God’s precious children. And so are you… There is a lot that my sabbatical can teach me, and a lot that it can teach you as well. I am getting a break from serving as your pastor, and you are getting a break from me! Good things can definitely happen in all our lives as we disengage and decompose a bit. This is an opportunity for you to grow closer to Jesus, the One who is the true Shepherd - the true pastor - of us all. In the months ahead, I hope that you come to worship Jesus, our Lord, who is worthy of our corporate worship. Come to the weekly gathering of the flock and let the Good Shepherd feed, water, and nurture you through His Word. I hope that you will feel his deep love for you, and that you will let him teach you many things. This is an opportunity for you to expand your own work as a disciple of Jesus Christ. One of the benefits of a sabbatical to a congregation is that it pushes responsibility for problem-solving down and out - down from the pastor’s position and out into the congregation. It allows the normal power structure to decompose a bit, and this allows for new growth to occur. During the sabbatical and study leave period, questions can be asked and can be solved by the elders, the deacons, the trustees, and the various ministries of the church. Working together, I think you will have a lot of fun during my absence, and you may discover some new ways to worship, learn, and serve. I’ll miss you during this sabbatical period, but I know you’ll be in good hands. Jesus remains the head of this church, and He will show compassion to you as He teaches you and calls on you to serve in new ways. (continued on p.2)

Oracle Volume XLIII - Issue L

Dear friends,

I am on my study leave and sabbatical for the next three months and two weeks. On the last week of September, I will be

back.

My study leave and sabbatical will be an opportunity for me to spend some time with my husband in Ohio, my family in

Thailand, and my son and his wife in California. I will be able to visit other churches that are trying, as we are, to em-

brace all people with God’s love and grace. I’ll learn from these congregations, and then come back and share my find-

ings. I want to look at the best practices of churches that do an excellent job of

welcoming people with true hospitality, and then return to OPC with some fresh ideas for ministry here.

I also want to take a break and enjoy some rest and renewal. Jesus knows I need it. The first followers of Jesus are an

awful lot like ourselves… working long hours, coming and going, with no chance to even sit down and grab a bite! So

Jesus said, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31) They accept the invitation of

Jesus, and escape by boat to a deserted place.

Jesus grasps something that today’s best thinkers are only beginning to understand: decomposition takes time. The mak-

ing of good, rich, life-giving compost, for example, takes time. You can’t hurry compost for the same reason you can’t

hurry love. In the same way, grandchildren take time, learning a foreign language takes a long time, the testing of new

drugs takes time, and vacations that truly enable us to rest, relax, and recreate take time. That’s why I’m taking a sabbati-

cal: decomposition takes time.

I need to decompose/decompress a bit if I’m going to come back here full of nutrients that the church needs for health

and growth. I am hoping that my sabbatical will help me to recover an important element of spiritual truth that I am valu-

able simply because I exist, as a child of God. My value doesn’t come from preaching

sermons, writing articles, or administrating or moderating the Session. I am valuable because I exist, as one of God’s

precious children. And so are you…

There is a lot that my sabbatical can teach me, and a lot that it can teach you as well. I am getting a break from serving as

your pastor, and you are getting a break from me! Good things can definitely happen in all our lives as we disengage and

decompose a bit.

This is an opportunity for you to grow closer to Jesus, the One who is the true Shepherd - the true pastor - of us all. In

the months ahead, I hope that you come to worship Jesus, our Lord, who is worthy of our corporate worship. Come to

the weekly gathering of the flock and let the Good Shepherd feed, water, and nurture you through His Word. I hope that

you will feel his deep love for you, and that you will let him teach you many things.

This is an opportunity for you to expand your own work as a disciple of Jesus Christ. One of the benefits of a sabbatical

to a congregation is that it pushes responsibility for problem-solving down and out - down from the pastor’s position and

out into the congregation. It allows the normal power structure to decompose a bit, and this allows for new growth to

occur.

During the sabbatical and study leave period, questions can be asked and can be solved by the elders, the

deacons, the trustees, and the various ministries of the church. Working together, I think you will have a lot of fun during

my absence, and you may discover some new ways to worship, learn, and serve.

I’ll miss you during this sabbatical period, but I know you’ll be in good hands. Jesus remains the head of this church, and

He will show compassion to you as He teaches you and calls on you to serve in new ways. (continued on p.2)

office with the birthdays and anniversaries, as well as the

correct spellings of the names of members in your

household.

A JOY AND A SORROW

It is a joy to have shared so many years of our lives

together here at OPC. We had some laughs and some tears.

It was a real joy to have me welcomed into your homes

and into your hearts. I knew your joy and your pain. You

have taught me so much of what is important in our short

lives here on this planet with our Lord Jesus. You have

provided for me a loving family… this, my friends, is a

treasure to be embraced and contemplated for all the rest

of my years. It is a joy that I can venture off on yet another

adventure in our life’s path, and I carry with me all that

you have taught me, and have shared with me. This will

give me peace and repose knowing of the many ways you

have enriched my life.

I’d like to share with you two quotes. The first is from

an article dated March 22, 1981. Gary Beikirch, a Vietnam

Veteran from Rochester, said, “Surrounded by death, I

began to understand that life is both fragile and beautiful -

and that friendship and love are more powerful than life.”

The second quote is from the book The Prophet by Kahlil

Bibran. (First, just to clarify, which you probably already

know to be true - when using the term him or his it should

be known as a reference to both genders) “People of

Orphalese,”… (oh, let me modify that a little)… “People

of Ogden Presbyterian, ‘When you part from your friend,

you grieve not; for that which you love most in him may

be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is

clearer from the plain. And let there be no purpose in

friendship save the deepening of the spirit. For love that

seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not

love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is

caught. And let your best be for your friend. If he must

know the ebb of your tide, let him know it’s flood also.

For what is your friend that you should seek him with

hours to kill? Seek him always with hours to live. For it is

his to fill your need, but not your emptiness. And in the

sweetness of friendship, let there be laughter, and sharing

of pleasures. For in the dew of little things, the heart finds

its morning and is refreshed.”

You have given me my deeper thirsting after life. And

if this day is not a fulfillment of your needs and my love,

then let it be a promise till another day.

My love to you all,

Dan Proper

Godspeed, brother, and may our paths eventually cross again. You will be missed

here at OPC.
