    INTRODUCTION

New starts or green hands to the offshore drilling industry not only face the challenges ofgetting to know a new job, but they are entering a unique lifestyle with rotations away from

    family and friends.

Hazards are expected in the oil and gas drilling industry and must be controlled.Improvements in drilling technology and oil rig operations have led to a reduction in injuries, but safety is always the top priority. Green hands will find that a significant portion oftime offshore is spent planning the work and assessing ways to perform tasks safely.

The Offshore Drilling Industry Green Hand TrainingStandardprepares new starts for work inthe offshore oil and gas industry. Types of drilling equipment, features of the lifestyle andpromotional pathways are a few of the introductory topics that will be covered in the training.Specific hazards in manual handling, chemical handling and working at height will bediscussed along with risk assessment and controls for reducing hazardous operations. Inaddition, helicopter and helideck safety will be presented - an important understanding for

new entrants as the majority of travel to and from offshore will be by air.

Making a success of an offshore career is up to the individual. A positive attitude, good workethic, ability to get along with others and cooperating within teams will see green handsthrough the early days of working in this challenging industry. The Offshore Drilling IndustryGreen Hand TrainingStandardwill provide them with the essential underpinning knowledgeand skills so their time on-board is safe and enjoyable.

    SECTION A TRAINING PROGRAMME

    A.1 Target Group

The Offshore Drilling Industry Green Hand training is designed to introduce the offshoredrilling industry to new entrants. The training and assessment programme will provide anoverview of the operations, lifestyle, hazards and safety practices which might beencountered by new personnel offshore. A module on manual handling, COSHH andworking at height will also give a detailed introduction to these topics for newcomers.

    The following modules are included:

Module 1 Introduction to drill ing operations

    Module 2 Working safely

Module 3 Manual handling, COSHH & Working at height

Module 4 Helicopter & helideck safety

Module 5 Banksman and Slinging Operations course (separateOPITO standard and certi ficate)*

Module 5 The Banksman and Slinging Operations course content is detailed in a separateOPITO approved standard. This course can be completed:

    A. At the same time as the Green Hand training orB. Separately, within six months,at an OPITO approved training establishment

An Offshore Drilling Industry Green Hand with Banksman & Slinging certificate (with the

individual units listed) will be issued once all five modules have been achieved.

The responsibility for delivering and assessing this programme rests with OPITOapproved training providers/drilling contractors.

    Section A Training Programme continued

    A.2 Delegate Prior Achievement

Training providers should confirm that delegates have reached the legal age of 18

    yearsin order to work offshore.

If taking Modules 1-4 and Module 5 SEPARATELY (i.e. no more than six months haselapsed or if the course is to be taken at separate training providers) delegates musthave an OPITO Banksman & Slinging Certificate before participating in the GreenHand modules. (See certification diagram on page 18)

Important note for training establishments:If the five modules are taken sequentially within a short period (5 to 10 days) at ONE trainingprovider, then some rearrangement of the modules, topics and the indoor/outdoor activitiesis allowed to avoid repetition and to make the best use of weather conditions. In this caseonly, the Banksman & Slinging module is not a prerequisite for the Green Hand modules.

(See certification diagram on page 18)

A.3 Medical and Health RequirementsThere are no specific requirements, although a good level of fitness is required forperforming drilling operations and new personnel will have medical checks beforeproceeding offshore.

    SECTION B RESOURCES

    B.1 Staff

In order for a training programme to be delivered successfully it is necessary to haveappropriate people in presenting and supporting roles.

OPITO approved training providers will deliver and carry out assessment of the modules.

    1. Training staff will be: Experienced in working offshore in a variety of roles specifically relating to

drilling operations Trained in instructional/lecture techniques and/or have proven

instructing/teaching experience Included in an ongoing training and development programme, which

ensures they are aware and knowledgeable of all changes to legislation

    and industry requirements

    2. Assessors will be:

Discipline experts trained and qualified in assessment techniques.

    B.2 Trainer/Delegate Ratio (Modules 1- 4)

The ratio shown for theory sessions indicates the maximum number of delegates thatshould attend the course in any one session.

    Theory 1 : 16

    Demonstrations 1 : 16

Note: Training providers might prefer to limit their courses ratios to 1:6 or 1:12 to be in linewith the OPITO Banksman & Slinging training course. This decision is optional.

Administrat ionarrangements appropriate for enrolment and certification of delegates.

Theory training area(s) with sufficient room to allow delegates to participate fully ingroup theory or syndicate paper exercises.

    Location of Training

It is recognised that the restricted range of resources and facilities required makes thiscourse suitable for on-location training. However, prior to any courses being deliveredremotely, training providers must comply with the following requirements:

    a) Prior to initial approval, the training provider will specify a single approved site andadvise OPITO of its intention to deliver training remotely.

    c) The training provider shall ensure the suitability of facilities and arrangements prior todelivery.

    d) Documented evidence will be retained by the training provider to show that deliveryof training at the remote site meets the criteria detailed in this OPITO standardincluding, but not limited to, facilities, equipment and qualification of instructional &assessment staff.

    e) Documented management procedures shall be retained which record any measuresrequired to assure the quality and safety of on location training.

    f) All records and associated documentation must be retained at a single, specifiedlocation, mutually agreed with OPITO, and made available at time of audit.
