IYMAs National DayHello and welcome to the ninth IrishYouth Music Awards National Day. It’sbeen a brilliant year with lots of regional events throughout the coun-try and lots of new clubs and projectsgetting involved in the IYMAs programme. It’s been a pleasure totravel up and down the country andsee the brilliant talent and communi-ties of young people working togetherto create their own music sceneswithin their youth clubs and projects.

Today is about them and showcasingwhat they do and most importantlyfor those involved to have fun meetnew friends and create new connec-tions with other young people doingthe same things in their communities.We see the IYMAs as a stepping stonefor those involved to learn new skillsand to further their journey into em-ployment and education opportunitieswithin the creative and music industry that exists within Ireland and overseas. Youth Work Ireland would like to welcome you all to ninth National Day for the IYMAs which marksthe launch of Youth Work Ireland Week 2016. Our organisation’s theme for this year is Mental WellBeing. As this is our flagship programme we want to explore supporting young people, look at employment opportunities within the creative industries while working together as a team. We areexcited to have so many new clubs and projects involved this year and we would like to thank all theparticipating regions, sponsors and supporters who have helped nurture and grow the IYMAs programme throughout the year.

Our Venue today....The Aviva Stadium is a world class sports stadium with a capacity for51,700 spectators (all seated). It is built on the site of the former Lans-downe Road stadium, which was demolished in 2007, and replacing it ashome to its chief tenants: the Irish Rugby Union Team and the Republicof Ireland football team. The stadium, located adjacent to LansdowneRoad railway station, was opened in May 2010. The stadium is Ireland'sfirst, and only, UEFA Elite Stadium and in 2011, it hosted the Europa League Final. It also hosted the inaugu-ral Nations Cup, as well as the regular home fixtures of the national rugby team, national football team andsome home fixtures for Leinster Rugby from August 2010 onwards.

IYMAs 2016... what a year!This year marks the ninth year ofthe Irish Youth Music Awards andwith our ten-year anniversary nextyear, we are very excited to welcomeyoung people from over fifteenyouth services across the island ofIreland. We have young people participating from Youth Work IrelandMember Youth Services, CDYSB(City of Dublin Youth ServicesBoard, Crosscare and our strategicpartners in Northern Ireland YANI(Youth Action Northern Ireland).

The IYMAs involves over 340 youthclubs and over 150 projects in communities all over Ireland. Thelocal youth club, or service, is at the heart of the community where people come together to be partof something important in their community. To date over 85,000 young people have taken part inand benefited from the IYMAs and each year we hope to grow this number and support our futurecultural entrepreneurs.

It’s been a very busy year since last year’s National Day with lots of news.... the two IYMAs performersJake Mc Ardle (2015 IYMAs Recipient act for team Louth) and Laura Duff (2015 Song writing winnerfor team Limerick) – pictured above had the opportunity to perform for the President of IrelandMichael D. Higgins sharing the bill with Dublin act Little Green Cars. This marked the launch of theIYMAs album featuring team Louth and songwriter Laura Duff. This was released nationally throughHMV Ireland and also received a worldwide digital release through I-Tunes, Spotify and several otherdigital providers.

The IYMAs is now officially a challenge partner of Gaisce which means young people participating inthe IYMAs programme can use their involvement to count towards their Gaisce award.

We are excited to have Ireland’s leading contemporary music college, BIMM Dublin involved in the national event again as our educational partners. This year’s Educational Hub has increased to tworooms so check the schedule for times and don’t forget to sign up to the workshop you want to attend as places are limited. We will be providing workshops and a support panel to young peoplewho are looking to further their careers in the creative and musical industries.

We would like to thank all our partners and supporters who have made this year very special. The Department of Children and Youth Affairs, Irish Youth Foundation, IMRO, Youth Action Northern Ireland, BIMM Dublin, Music Maker, Gaisce and all the young people, youth workers, clubs and projects across Ireland who participated this year. We can’t wait to work with you all again next year.

MentorsToday’s mentors will be overseeing todays regional acts on the main stage, andwill be involved in selecting the IYMAs 2016 recipient.

Keith Johnson (IMRO)As Director of Marketing and Membership of IMRO, Keith Johnson overseas all of the organisation’smembership development and marketing activities. An honours business graduate from Trinity Col-lege and DIT, his role at IMRO also sees him looking after all advertising, promotional, sponsor-ship and online activities. Over the years he has built up a strong reputation for his knowledgeof the songwriting and publishing worlds. He runs the annual IMRO Showcase Tour and alsohandles the regular series of IMRO songwriting workshops, masterclasses, industry seminarsand collaborations. In the spring of 2005, Keith was centrally involved in getting the Music FromIreland initiative – supporting Irish artists at international music events like SXSW, CMJ and Eu-rosonic – off the ground. The project has gone from strength to strength. He is past Chairman ofFirst Music Contact (FMC). Johnson was also centrally involved in the production of the Deloitte Reporton the Irish music industry with was produced in early 2015. He is also a member of the steering committee for the'Mapping Popular Music in Dublin' research project and was recently an External Examiner on a review committeefor the BIMM Dublin BA (Hons) Commercial Modern Music.

Gráinne Biddle - Sony Music Ireland Currently working as Press and Promotions Executive for Sony Music Ireland. Artists I work withinclude; Little Mix, George Ezra, Ella Henderson, Hermitage Green, Walk The Moon, RyanAdams, The Vaccines, Bring Me The Horizon, Kygo, Leon Bridges, Craig David and others. I previ-ously interned with Warner Music Ireland and lived in London for a year working as a musicjournalist. I studied Media and Literature at NUI Maynooth. Today my views are my own.

Phil Udell - State Magazine / Word Up CollectionPhil Udell is a founder and the editor-in-chief of State.ie, the online music magazine that started lifein a physical format and has gone on to become one of the country's most respected titles. Set-ting the standard in terms of editorial approach and design, State has not only featured interna-tional artists but also championed homegrown talent - providing Irish musicians such asVillagers, Hozier, Soak and Ham Sandwich with an early platform and continually searching outnew talent of all genres. In the past he has written for Hot Press, been the editor of MUZU.TV,handled record company PR and mentored a number of artists. Is latest project is the Word UpCollective, which brings together a number of the country's most exciting new artists working inthe world of hip-hop, RnB, pop, soul and rap.

Kate Rogers - IYMA 2015 Recipient Region SongwriterKate Rogers is a musician from Dundalk, Co. Louth. She is currently specialising in guitar and vocals inDundalk Institute of Technology. Her main influences come from contemporary and classical music.Kate was always surrounded by these two genres of music, Contemporary music coming fromher mother and classical music coming from her father. Through DKIT she is hoping to get a de-gree in BA Honours Applied Music, in hoping to become a secondary school teacher. She hasperformed in stage shows since a young age, such as The Simpsons Stage School in 2005. Shehas also performed gigs in places such as our local pub The Spirit Store and at the Irish YouthMusic Awards National Days in the Aviva Stadium in 2013-2015. As both a musician and a com-poser Kate has won a number of awards including Best Musician Award in St.Vincents SecondarySchool (2014) and Best Songwriter in Louth in the Irish Youth Music Awards (2015). She has recorded two Eps, onewith over 1,700 views on YouTube. She also got a massive opportunity to record her own Ep on the WorldwideJohn Lennon Tour Bus in 2013, which received a total of nearly 2,000 views. She is currently signed up with LockupRehearsals, performing in a variety of gigs.

Education HubMusic Industry PanelThe following tutors will be facilitating a panel discussion and answering anyquestions you have.

Alan CullivanAlan began his career as the bass player with Dublin Punk/Pop band Puppy Love Bomb who were signed to RoughTrade. After leaving the band Alan worked at Lakota Records, the Sony imprint label on the very suc-cessful campaign for JJ72. He then discovered and began to manage The Thrills. Alan negotiatedthe band’s deal with EMI’s Virgin Records and also with BMG Publishing and oversaw all aspectsof band’s campaigns throughout the world. He then discovered Dublin band Humanzi andsigned them to Universal’s Fiction Records and BMG Publishing. Alan currently has a busy man-agement company working with new artists such as And So I Watch You From Afar and TheDanger Is. He is also Founding Chairman of MMF Ireland (Music Managers Forum Ireland) whichhas been set up to establish educational events for management at all levels in the music busi-ness and to act as a lobbying group on behalf of artists management.

James ByrneBorn and raised in Dublin, James joined his first band at 15 and spent his formative musical years as an active pres-ence within the city’s fertile underground DIY music scene. He studied music management at college,and upon leaving began working for Dublin’s leading pirate radio station, Phantom FM, hosting ashow for the next ten years while promoting various events around the city, including the leg-endary Doo-wop clubnight, ‘Three Steps to Heaven’. James has spent the last six years touringthe world drumming in Mercury-nominated and Choice-prize-winning band, Villagers, sharingstages with the likes of Elbow, Neil Young, Grizzly Bear and The National. He also owns and runsthe Any Other City label, releasing records by some of Ireland’s leading young artists, such asJames Vincent McMorrow, Villagers, Girl Band and Jet Setter. His wealth of experience within theindependent music scene gives him a unique perspective on the skills and knowledge required tosurvive within the modern music industry.

Gav FoxGavin started his career with Irish band Turn. He signed his first deal at the age of 18 and over the nextseven years they recorded three albums, toured relentlessly and earned a reputation as one of thetop live bands of the time. In 2002, Gavin was asked to join Scottish punk rockers, Idlewild. Forthe next three years the band toured worldwide and opened for acts such as U2, Pearl Jam,REM, The Pixies and The Rolling Stones, later spending three months in L.A. at the legendarySunset Sound studio recording an album with producer Tony Hoffer. After Idlewild, Gavin spenta year touring America and Canada with Vega 4, before going on to form Concerto For Constan-tine with long-time friends Mark Greaney (JJ72) and Binzer Brennan (The Frames). More recently,Gavin’s been producing soundtrack music and writing with other singer-songwriters.

Dan FinneganAfter studying music at Trinity College in Dublin, Dan went to work as a Manager for Los Angeles-based management company, Sargent House. Following this, he took on the role of SargentHouse’s European Head of Press, tailoring successful campaigns for artists such as Deafheavenand Chelsea Wolfe. More recently, Dan has founded Paper Trail Records, a Dublin-based man-agement company and record label, working with both international and domestic acts.

WorkshopsShelley BukspanAn American/Israeli singer, songwriter and performer, Shelley has been part of the Irish music scenesince 1986. As a front woman and solo artist, she’s performed at many events and festivals, includ-ing CMJ New York and the Montreux Jazz Festival, among others. She’s also appeared on TV andradio shows both in Ireland and abroad, such as sessions for the BBC, with the RTE Orchestraand many more. She’s recorded, collaborated with and arranged backing vocals for artists suchas Mary Black, Bronagh Gallagher, Mary Coughlan, Horslips and other many indie and contem-porary young Irish artists. Shelley runs music workshops, as well as leading a choir and her ownGospel quartet, The BC Singers. Her recent projects includes an album of original Northern Souland Ska with The Supertonic Sound Club, plus work on her solo album.

Paul MoorePaul has been playing electric bass since the age of 14 and upright bass from 16. He’s recorded withMary Coughlan, Declan O’Rourke, Juliet Turner, Katie Melua, The Chieftains, Colm Wilkinson, DonalLunny, Ronnie Drew, Mark Knopfler and Van Morrison, and worked exclusively with Riverdancefor four years between 1998 and 2001, holding the role of Musical Director for two of thoseyears. Paul has also performed live with Andrew Strong, Frances Black, Jimmy MacCarthy, PaulBrady, Alex Chilton, Rita Coolidge, Moving Hearts, Solomon Burke and Van Morrison. He’srecorded movie soundtracks with Mike Batt, Frank Patterson, Conor McPherson and the IrishFilm Orchestra, and has performed in numerous musicals including West Side Story, Jesus ChristSuperstar and Les Miserables. Paul has broad teaching experience, having taught Bass and Musi-cianship with The Making Music Workshop based in the North of Ireland, and performed Bass Master-classes on many occasions.

Johnny BoyleJohnny has been playing drums since the age of 12 and joined his first band when he was just 14.Since then, he’s played, recorded and toured with many notable artists, including Andy White,The Frames, Marianne Faithful, Pugwash, LiR, The Duckworth Lewis Method, Mundy, DamienRice, Neil Hannon, Finbar Furey and Don Baker. Over the course of his career, Johnny has madetelevision appearances with Elton John, Ronan Keating, Westlife, Atomic Kitten, Sophie Ellis Bex-tor and Shayne Ward. He’s also played on many movie soundtracks, including those for ‘I WentDown’ and ‘Once’.

Tully GunawardhanaTully is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer and producer. He began studying cello, piano andmusic theory at the age of six. In 2002, he formed and managed The Chapters, opening for actssuch as Chuck Berry, Neil Young, Damien Rice, The Frames, OK Go, Kelly Rowland, The Coronasand Cathy Davey. In 2010 he became a featured member of James Vincent McMorrow’s liveband, touring the US, Canada and Europe, opening for acts such as Arcade Fire and performingon TV shows such as ‘Later… with Jools Holland’. Tully has also performed, toured and recordedwith Paul Brady, Josh Groban, Oliver Cole, Declan De Barra and Brian McFadden, and has com-posed and produced music for TV and viral campaigns for brands including Sony Playstation,Pepsi, MTV and Strongbow. More recently, he’s turned his full attention to songwriting; co-penningThe Coronas’ hit single ‘All The Others’, which reached No.3 in the Irish Singles Charts, as well as TheVoice Ireland 2012 winner Pat Byrne’s debut album, which peaked at No.10 in the Irish Album Charts.

They will be awarded with the Irish Youth Music Awards trophyto bring home to their region.

Five days recording time in Sun Studios

The opportunity for their region to avail of five days recording time in Sun Studios (travel & accommoda-tion will not be included). Sun Studios was opened by Paddy Dunning in Dublin's Temple Bar, Temple LaneRecording Studios has been at the centre of Irish music since 1984. A huge range of acts have recordedsome of the most important songs and albums of the last 30 years here. The studio is also considered ahome of independent Irish music and Irish bands. The list of artists who have recorded here is endlessand includes U2, The script, Morrissey, Bressie, The Coronas and Kanye West.

Production of your Album

The recipient region will receive one hundred and fifty physical copies of the CD they record with a pro-fessional design.

This album will also be digitally distrubted through I-Tunes, Spotify and several other digital stores.

As part of the prize this year we are very excited to have teamed up with Music Maker Dublin who will beproviding a full backline including the following to the recipient region of this year’s Irish Youth MusicAwards. This equipment includes the following:
