I would like to thank you for the great honor and privilege to serve as your 2017 Wake County Dental Society President. This is truly a great organization of which I am proud to be a part. In this role, I am faced with a lot of exciting challenges. The first is to fill the shoes of our past presidents whose dedicated leadership have resulted in our society being regarded as one of the most respected in the state. The second challenge is to face the continued pressure of corporate dentistry becoming a major player in the practice of North Carolina dentistry. Please encourage your fellow professionals to join our society so, together, we can determine the best course of action to prevent corporate dentistry from taking over our practices lowering standard care and public image of our profession. We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Johanna Irving join us as our new Executive Director to replace Ms. Lisa Mayer. Lisa has spent the last four years serving you and our society. Her devotion to our profession has been commendable and she will be greatly missed. I would also like to thank Dr. Rex Card, Dr. Dillon Atwood and Dr. Nazir Ahmad for their past leadership and commitment to our society. Please extend your thanks to them when you can. Thanks to your support, the year will be filled with a dynamic group of speakers presenting the most up to date information in the fields of restorative dentistry, pediatric dentistry and endodontics among others while focusing on the needs of our members. We will continue to foster our relationships with organizations including Wake Smiles, the Dental Foundation of North Carolina, the Salvation Army, Wake Smiles Dental Clinic, Poe Center and the North Carolina Dental Fund (Mom Clinic) and many others to further the agenda of the dental profession. In closing, I welcome the opportunity to serve you and to lead our society into its’ next chapter. Please feel free to contact me at any time with any concerns or suggestions. A FEW WORDS FROMTHE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR...

I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the Raleigh Wake County Dental Society (RWCDS) membership as the new executive director. I have worked in Wake County for over 30 years and have been a longtime member of the RWCDS. I was born in Raleigh, graduated from Sanderson High School, and completed both undergraduate and graduate studies at UNC Chapel Hill. Recently I retired from Wake County Human Services after 30 years of service with the Dental Public Health Program in positions of staff dentist, clinic manager, and for the last 20 years as dental director.

I have a new appreciation for all that Lisa Mayer has done for the society over the last four years. Fortunately, Lisa has exemplary organizational skills and is a very patient teacher. I greatly appreciate her guidance over this transition period and willingness to be available for questions in the future.

Over the years, I have gotten to know many of the RWCDS membership but the number of dentists has grown tremendously. I look forward to getting to know the full membership and supporting the Executive Board in their work promoting the profession of dentistry, sponsoring quality continuing education, and providing a forum for sharing ideas and knowledge.

With the new year upon us, I have jumped into my new role processing your membership renewals. Thank you to those who have already renewed and if you have not yet had a chance to renew please submit your application and dues either by mail or online at the RWCDS.org website. Dues are considered late after February 1st and memberships not renewed by March 1st will be suspended so please respond soon and encourage others to join!

I look forward to meeting you all at the upcoming meetings!

Please extend a warm welcome to our new members. They are:

EMPLOYMENT ISSUES – A SAMPLE CASE

After a long and expensive process to find a new hygienist, “Dr. Smith” finally hired “Susan” based on the recommendation of one of his dental assistants. She said that she and Susan had been best friends for years and that Susan would be an excellent choice.

Unfortunately, problems with Susan soon surfaced. She came to work late and left early. A few times she simply failed to show up. Her hygiene work was spotty and her work area was dirty and messy. The last straw came when, in front of a patient, she argued with Dr. Smith about his treatment recommendations. Immediately after that confrontation, he fired her.

As Dr. Smith began looking for a replacement, Susan filed an unemployment claim. She next submitted a charge of sexual harassment with EEOC. She also told the dental board that Dr. Smith overprescribed narcotics. Luckily, she forgot about the OSHA office.

The dentist soon received a notice of the unemployment claim. EEOC reported Susan’s accusations and offered to mediate the dispute. Shortly thereafter, an investigator from the Dental Board showed up demanding copies of patient charts. The frantic dentist called his attorney.

The lawyer reviewed Susan’s personnel file. It contained her job application, citizenship paperwork, and tax information. There was no evidence that the dentist had ever counseled Susan about her poor job performance. Also, there was no documentation that Susan had ever received a copy of the office policies. There were no attendance records and no photos of Susan’s sloppy work place. Besides Dr. Smith, the only witness to the episode with the patient was Susan’s “BFF”, the dental assistant, who was experiencing memory problems. Faced with the absence of any helpful evidence, the lawyer recommended paying Susan off.

Dr. Smith learned the following painful lessons from his experience with Susan.

1. Hiring best friends or relatives of existing employees is a bad idea.2. All new employees must sign a statement that they have read the office policy manual.3. Dr. Smith should have taken photographs of Susan’s messy work space.4. Immediately after the confrontation in front of the patient, Dr. Smith should have asked his dental

assistant to submit a statement about what she saw and heard.

When Susan first failed to meet expectations, Dr. Smith should have met with her. The office manager should have attended the meeting as a witness and to take notes. Dr. Smith should have described the problem, stated how the deficiency must be corrected, and explained the repercussions of failing to comply.

Concerning Susan’s tardiness, Dr. Smith should have identified the dates and times that Susan had not reported to work on time. He should have told her that if she failed to timely report for work again, she would be terminated. After the meeting, he should have reviewed the office manager’s notes and put them in Susan’s personnel file.

Dr. Smith’s story is based on actual cases that I have handled in the past. I assure you that implementing the above recommendations will help you avoid a similar employment mess in the future.
