January 2016 in the MK bandroom, Pete Kochlacs, MKHS Alumni from 1965 (here

pictured with Dr. Bartlett), donates a four-valve King baritone horn to the program. We

have named the instrument "King Pete" in honor of Mr. Kochlacs.

On February 5th, 2016, students from Dr. Bartlett’s band and orchestra classes attended a beautiful performance of The Planets at the Walt Disney

Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles. The students had been anticipating this fieldtrip with excitement, discovering intriguing facts about this seven-

movement orchestral suite by Gustav Holst.

Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the Disney Concert Hall is set atop Bunker Hill. The students admired the impressive building that resembled

silver sails as they walked up the red patterned stairs to their seats. Seated on the balcony, the group had an intimate view of the entire Philharmonic

Orchestra. The famous “French fries,” which are organ pipes, were noted by some students with amusement.

Following the concert, the students enjoyed lunch by the Music Center Fountain. With about an hour of free time, some ventured out to the

nearby farmer’s market, while others took pictures with the magnificent sculptures and buildings.

Listening to The Planets at the Disney Concert Hall was an amazing experience.

The Mark Keppel Band is in need of donations for the following:

1. Purchase of new uniforms. Actual uniforms were

bought in 1993 and need replacement. Inside liners are

in bad shape. We have placed an order for only 10 jack-

ets thanks to the generous donations of several donors

but we still need to replace 53 more jackets. Also some

accessories for the uniforms need to be replaced (hats,

pants, shoes, etc.) Each uniform has a cost of about

$500.00

2. $3000 for professional instrumental mentors.

3. $8000 for purchase of music, supplies, & equipment.

4. Any amount donation towards the San Diego Field

trip.

There are many other expenses that need to be cov-

ered for the band. No donation is small. We thank you

for your support.
