Unfortunately, during this season, forage quality is often at its lowest. Winter feed costs are the single largest expense in a cow/calf operation. The winter feeding program on your farm will all depend on the body condition of your cows, the quality of forage that is fed, availability of winter feed supplements, and costs. A large percent of winter feeding occurs 60 days before calving, during which a majority of fetal growth occurs, through 90 days after calving, which includes lactation and rebreeding. Both increase the nutritional needs of the cow. During this 150-day period, the cow’s diet should be sufficient enough to maintain a body condition score (BCS) of 5 to 6. Body Condition Scoring utilizes a 9 point scale to assist with determining the health of your cattle, with 1 being emaciated and 9 obese. At the 5 to 6 BCS level, a cow should be able to maintain her body weight and support production functions such as fetal growth, calving, lactation, and rebreeding. Depending on the quality of the forage being fed, supplementing the cows may be necessary. When forage quality is low, most times we are looking to either a protein or energy deficiency or sometimes both in our hay crops. That is why BCS and forage testing your hay crop is so important. The goal of supplementation is to provide nutrients to the cows that are not available in sufficient quantity or adequate balance and to do this economically. Supplements are classified broadly as protein supplements or energy supplements both of which contain protein and energy. The difference between the two is the relative concentration of protein. Protein supplements contain high concentrations of protein, usually 25 percent crude protein or greater. Energy supplements contain lower concentrations of protein, generally less than 18 percent crude protein. The protein level in the ruminant diet is crucial for microbial growth and function. Without protein supplementation, the rumen cannot adequately digest that poor-quality hay. In a low protein diet, digestion is slow and cows can actually not get enough to eat and lose weight. Cold temperatures significantly raise a cow’s energy requirements. Undeveloped winter hair coats, wet hides, and wind all combined can cause an increase in energy requirements. One of these protein feed-stuffs such as soybean meal (48 percent CP) or cottonseed meal (44 percent CP) can be combined with corn (which is an energy source) in a ration that can be used as a feed to supplement low quality forage; thereby increasing the nutritional value of your winter feeding program. If you don’t have the proper equipment or labor to feed a grain ration to meet your cow’s needs, then you may want to look at using protein tubs as a supplement to your winter forage. These tubs contain a mixture of protein sources, grains, vitamins, minerals, and molasses that is cooked and hardened to form a sweet lick product containing 24-30 percent protein that cows can utilize for their nutritional needs with less labor from the producer. The most accurate way to determine the protein or energy supplemental needs of your cows on a hay diet is to have your hay analyzed for nutrient content. This will save your operation hundreds of dollars in winter feeding costs. Livestock nutritional needs are at their highest demand during the

winter months, according to Sandy Smith, Ohio State University Extension.

When forage quality is low, most times we are looking to either a protein or energy

deficiency or sometimes both in our hay crops. That is why BCS and forage testing your hay crop is so important.

The goal of supplementation is to provide nutrients to the cows that are not available in sufficient quantity or adequate balance and to do this economically.

Supplements are classified broadly as protein supplements or energy supplements – both of which contain protein and energy. The difference between the two is the relative concentration of protein. Protein supplements contain high concentrations of protein, usually 25 percent crude protein or greater. Energy supplements contain lower concentrations of protein, generally less than 18 percent crude protein.

The protein level in the ruminant diet is crucial for microbial growth

and function.

By Dean Summerbell

The summer of 2018 was a memorable one. I don’t remember

a time when I was so immobile and yet, I was still able to cover all the Limousin shows at the Heartland state fairs and one county fair. I apologize for not making the normal amount

of herd visits, but three months after surgery, I am still wondering, “Why did I do it?” I know it will get better as my knee is improving with lots of therapy and home exercise. I just did not realize how long my recovery was going to take.

I received a lot of support from the state fair staff and friends. At the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, our car was parked at a local residence. Antonio got his car out of his garage and gave me a lift to the livestock gate, saving about a ½ mile of limping.

At the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, the security chief tore up my parking pass and gave me a new one which was just outside of the Limousin barn. This saved a considerable amount of walking on uneven ground.

Jamie Watts of Fairfield, Nebraska, had the use of his grandmother’s electric cart which was a great step saver at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island.

At the South Dakota State Fair in Huron, a courtesy cart was always available so the limping at Huron was at a minimum.

The Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul proved to be the biggest challenge. I ended up walking over ½ mile from the bus to the Livestock barn and then worked the Limousin show, lining up the cattle for the show. At the end of the day, Don Biscoe asked the head of the livestock competition to send a golf cart for a ride back to the bus area.

The Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson provided a parking space next to the Limousin stalls so it was easy to navigate the short distance to where the “Limis” were stalled. After getting to my destinations, I used my chair to sit and visit with the exhibitors and those who attended the show.

THANK YOU to all of those who made my job easier. It was certainly appreciated!

Beverly and I look forward to the fall sales and events as I continue to heal. Driving is not a problem. Bending my knee to exit the vehicle is a challenge at times. Oh well, it is what it is and we will make the best of it.

The cattle market in late September reflected the USDA cattle on feed increase. The live weight cattle took a downturn in prices as did the feeder market. The feeder market, according to one market analyst, thought that the recent drought stricken areas had already weaned and sent their spring production

to the feedlots, which would support the higher percentage cattle on feed.

Looking at the feeder market, the annual fall run is in full swing. I think, in a down market, quality and yield becomes even more important. Buyers are looking to increase quality and yield. In addition, even though the grain markets are not reflecting a strong price for grain, closeouts are still a priority in adding profitability to your cattle.

LIMOUSIN is the most feed efficient for gain. Now that our carcass quality has improved and our yield is still among the highest percentage of dressed beef, Limousin is a wise choice for commercial producers to use.

I keep hearing about the older ranchers still thinking that Limousin are “wild.” I know that reputation is hard to live down. However, the Limousin breed has the highest docility score. We need to let the industry know we can deliver profit because of our increased quality of product with tremendous yield and that we have docile animals.

I want to commend our HLA states associations for promoting social events and activities. Four of the states sponsored a meal for the exhibitors and fans following their state fair open shows. It was a great way to socialize and get reacquainted with other Limousin breeders, their families and junior members. Kansas held a social event the week after their fair at the preserve/lake owned by Hubert Thomas, O.T. Farms of Fort Scott, Kansas. Everyone enjoyed the camaraderie, pontoon rides, hay ride and games.

It is important for state associations to provide an opportunity for members to get together, whether it be a social gathering, a state sale, a show, or an annual meeting. These events are not only a great way to promote the breed but also to gain friendships that are so important in our industry.

Finally, Beverly and I want to wish our subscribers a Happy Thanksgiving, a very blessed Merry Christmas, and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Thank you for all of your support and we look forward to 2019 with great enthusiasm in the Limousin breed.

William and Sarah Long of Afton, IA, discussed the latest Union Co. news with former Union County resident Dean Summerbell at the Iowa State Fair.

in the field of education, we would no longer have to go through workshop and get our rooms ready for the upcoming school year.

It was not possible for us to travel at that time because Dean was already working as assistant Beef Superintendent at the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul. Our son, Mike, worked fulltime at the Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum on the fairgrounds so I said to him, “I want to work at the fair. What type of job should I do?” I knew I did not want to clean toilets. Mike said, “Mom, you like to talk so you should work in an Information Booth.”

This was my 21st year working in an Information Booth, by Gate #5, which is one of the main gates into the fair. I work all 12 days, from 2:30-9:30 p.m. As you can about imagine, the three of us in our booth answer all types of questions. Some are unusual, others are funny, a few are unbelievable, and then they are those that are just plain strange. This year our fair set attendance records on five of the 12 days. The largest was Labor Day Saturday when 270,426 guests came through the gates. The overall attendance was 2,046,533.

A couple of the funniest questions come to mind: “Can you tell me where I parked my car?” is one that I was not able to answer. In another instance, after being told where the bathroom was, right across the street from my booth, the fairgoer asked, “How do I get in?” Another funny thing that happens all the time is that fairgoers pick up the map, study it and then ask, “Is this the map?” I could write a book about the many unique experiences I have had over the years.

I’ve also learned that they are a lot of lonely people in this world. There are fairgoers who come to our booth, not only for many days of the fair, but they also come year after year. If you give a smile and are friendly, you have made their day and they think of you as their friend. Our minister mentioned this particular thing in a sermon a couple of weeks ago. The comment was, “You never know what impact you may have on the life of another person, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.” I do believe that is very true!

I’ve also enjoyed taking photos of some of the interesting sights at the fair. Three of the fairs we’ve attended had interesting things carved out of butter. In Iowa they created a huge, old John Deere tractor, in Kansas they recreated a person grooming an animal getting ready for the show ring, and in Minnesota they carved the heads of the Princess Kay and the 11 other contestants, each in 50 lbs. of butter. I don’t know if they carve anything out of butter at any of the other fairs we attend; Nebraska, Missouri and South Dakota. As you can see from reading this article, the fair is “in my blood.”

By now, many of you know that I am a “fair junkie.” I’ve loved fairs

for as long as I can remember, not only attending them for many years but also helping when we exhibited cattle and later on, working at the county and state fair.

I started working at our county fair when Dean was president of the

Anoka County fair board. I worked in the office, and one year I even typed the entire entry book. That was a challenge that took many months of hard work!

When we retired from teaching, everyone said that Dean and I should take a vacation. They thought we would be sad because, after 34 years

Kansas News…Members Travel to Fort Scott for Social

Members of the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) traveled to Fort Scott Saturday, September 22, 2018, to take part in a social gathering and barbecue supper. A large crowd enjoyed the day at the fishing/hunting club owned by Hubert Thomas, O.T. Farms, and his family.

We want to give a special thanks to the Thomas family; Hubert and his wife, Jo, his daughter, Natalie and her husband, John Snyder, and their children Lucas, Zach and Ella for serving as hosts for this event. Their family also provided the burgers and hot dogs for the meal. We also thank all the people who

provided salads, cheesy hash brown potatoes, chips/dips, and desserts. It was a delicious feast!

There were a variety of activities planned throughout the day as well as time for socializing. Hubert gave rides on his pontoon around the private lake, John took a group on a hayride around the lake after supper, there were corn hole games, some went fishing, and a couple of the younger set decided the water was still warm enough to go swimming.

MeetingKLBA president Mark Beikmann

presided over a short meeting after the meal. The meeting began with the induction of Walt and Jackie Rolf,

Rolf Limousin, of LeRoy, Kansas, into the KLBA “Hall of Fame” followed by the presentation of the “Commercial Producer of the Year” award to Sutton Farms, Sutton 5S Cattle Co. of Grenola, Kansas.

Following the awards, Mark discussed the upcoming KLBA State Sale in March and the sale of ads for a herd book. Pages for the calving book will be sold at a rate of $250 for a full page and $150 for a ½ page. There will be an additional $50 KLBA membership fee to out-of-state breeders who are not members or commercial people who wish to place an ad. Please contact any KLBA board member and let them know if you want to purchase a spot in the herd book.

Raffle TicketsPat Meek, KLBA secretary, passed

out raffle tickets at the social. In addition, she will mail the tickets to members who were not able to attend the social. The tickets will be sold throughout the upcoming months and the drawing will be held at the Flint Hills Choice Sale in March.

The ticket packets will come with 12 tickets per packet, so the total will be $100 if they are sold as 3/$25. There will be two prizes; a Daniel Boone Green Mountain Grill and an Ozark Trail 52 Qt. High Performance Cooler.

This will be the major fundraiser for the KLBA and the money raised will go to support the senior and junior Limousin associations.

Sutton 5S Cattle Co. Awarded KLBA Commercial Producer of the Year

The Sutton Family, Sutton 5S Cattle Co. of Grenola, Kansas, were selected by the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) as the recipient of the 2018 “Commercial Producer of the Year” award. The award was given to the family on September 22, 2018, at the KLBA Social near Fort Scott, Kansas.

Ed Sutton began buying Limousin bulls in the mid-1980s, and bought his first group of Limousin heifers in 1988 from GV Limousin of Garnett, Kansas. He has purchased Limousin bulls every year since then for his 470 black-based cowherd which grazes on nearly 4,000 acres of ranch land near Grenola.

Ed’s wife, Coco, was a federal veterinarian with the USDA. She felt that the Limousin cattle did more to correct deficiencies in a cow than

any other breed. She passed away in 2010 and since then, Ed and his daughter, Robyn, operate the ranch. They continue to handle the cattle in the traditional way. They like the muscle that Limousin provides and the profitability of the calves.

The strong bond of relationship between the Sutton family and GV Limousin goes beyond just the good customer service from Gene Raymond and his family. It has evolved into a personal friendship between Ed, Gene and the families. The Suttons have continued their business and personal relationship with GV Limousin for more than 30 years.

Congratulations to the Sutton Family, 5S Cattle Co., for this well-deserved honor!

Rolf Limousin Inducted into KLBA “Hall of Fame”

Walt and Jackie Rolf, Rolf Limousin of LeRoy, Kansas, were inducted into the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) “Hall of Fame” Saturday, September 22, 2018. The ceremony took place during the Kansas social.

Rolf Limousin began in 1991 with the purchase of their first Limousin bull from Ratliff ’s Cherry Creek Farms. They were impressed with the calves and when their daughter, Megan, was old enough to show her first heifer, they returned to Ratliff ’s to purchase a show heifer. That first show heifer became the foundation for Rolf Limousin.

In subsequent years, more and more purebred cattle were added to the herd, bolstered by show animals each year and the calves they produced. In 2001 Megan bred and raised the Reserve Grand Champion bull at the All-American Limousin Futurity in Louisville, Kentucky named LFRO Knockout.

While these animals formed the foundation of the herd, in the early 2000’s, Walt and Jackie bought out Van Bohman’s herd near Wichita, Kansas, VW Flint Hills Limousin. This

herd included 50 cows with 20 calves at side as well as COLE Magnum 15M. These animals were integrated into the herd along with a group of 20 cows from Montana purchased from Rob Matthews of Highlight Stock Farms.

After these additions, Rolf Limousin increased the use of AI and ET as well as purchasing Wulfs Nobel Prize 3861N from Wulf Limousin of Morris, Minnesota. This bull became a popular AI sire within the breed.

Cattle from Rolf Limousin have been successfully exhibited at numerous shows and were sold to many buyers throughout the country at the Iowa Beef Expo, and the Missouri and Kansas State Sales. These sales complemented their locker beef business and the sale of bulls to local commercial cattlemen.

In 2017, Walt and Jackie made the difficult decision to cut back their herd and enjoy retirement. They currently maintain a herd of approximately 45 cows, and they use their extra grassland to background the calves and sell them after 90 days of grazing.

Congratulations to the Sutton 5S Cattle Co. on their selection as the 2018 KLBA “Commercial Producer of the Year.” They were nominated by GV Limousin of Garnett, KS. (l to r): Gene Raymond, Robyn Sutton, Ed Sutton, Arne Hansen and Dean Summerbell.

KLBA president Mark Beikmann presented the 2018 KLBA “Hall of Fame” award to Jackie and Walt Rolf of Leroy, KS, along with Dean Summerbell.

Kaitlyn Boyer Interns at Wulf Cattle

Editor’s Note: Kaitlyn Boyer, daughter of Jason and Amy Boyer of Weldon, Iowa, spent the summer working as an intern at Wulf Cattle/Riverview in Atkinson, Nebraska.

Kaitlyn’s ReportThis summer I had

the amazing opportunity to be an intern with Wulf Cattle/Riverview in Atkinson, Nebraska. I started the end of May and completed the internship the beginning of August.

I spent the time on both the cow-calf ranch and the feedlot side, which gave me a chance to experience a wide variety of tasks. I was able to take part in AI’ing cows, roping, sorting, moving and processing cattle, riding pens, branding, taking blood samples, treating calves, making fence, putting out minerals, a few necropsies, learning more Spanish, and much, much more. I could not have asked for a better experience or better people to work with.

As I finished my internship and came back home for my junior year at Iowa State in Ames, I realized just how much I gained from my time spent in Nebraska. Being on a cow-calf operation where many of the bulls we use for AI at home are born and raised, my eyes were opened as to how a larger cow-calf ranch operates. I miss the crew and sure wish I could have brought my horse, Chanclas, back with me, but I know this wasn’t goodbye, just – see you again soon. Thank you, Wulf Cattle, for the wonderful summer!

Drew Abbas, a senior at Iowa State University

in Ames, was featured in a section on young, future farmers in the September 29, 2018, Iowa Farmer Today

magazine. He will graduate in December with a degree in agriculture.

At this time of the year, Drew is not only thinking about graduation but also the upcoming harvest. He grew up in Alexander, Iowa, helping his father and grandfather on the family farm

where they grow corn and soybeans along with raising cattle.

Drew started by helping the family with their herd, but he now owns 90 head. Once he graduates, he plans to continue to help with the family farm as well as maintain an off-the-farm job. He believes that the benefit of having a college degree can open many doors.

As president of the Farm Operations club at Iowa State, Drew said that he has gained even more real-world experience. He also said that you learn from your studies and from the Ag 450 farm, is a student-managed farm, where you had the opportunity to make connections with business people.

Drew was recently elected to the Iowa Limousin Association board of directors.

Regular Schedule Gets Calvesto the Bunk

It’s time to start thinking about weaning calves, and although you expect to hear some upset

mama cows and calves for a few days, there are ways to eliminate stress in the calves and keep them healthy by getting them to the bunk to eat.

According to Twig Marston, beef business development and field support specialist at BioZyme, getting calves used to eating a grain diet involves feed preparation, feed presentation, and management decis ions that wil l help stimulate appetites.

As you determine the diet you will put your weaned calves on, make sure it is a highly palatable, nutrient-dense ration. Be sure the feed is fresh and has a good texture and flavor, Marston said in a company news release.

Making sure you have clean, accessible bunks the calves can comfortably eat from is important to make sure they all get to the bunk to eat. Make sure the bunks are the right height for the calves to easily get their heads into and eat from without adding stress to their experience. Be sure the bunks are free from stale feed, dirt, and manure.

Establish a signal to let the calves know it is feeding time and that feed is waiting for them. This can be a loud calf call, a whistle or bucket rattle that you use each time you feed them. They will get accustomed to hearing this signal and associate it with feeding time.

It is important to establish a regular feeding schedule with your calves. They will be used to eating at specific times. Feeding them twice daily will keep the feed fresher in the bunk.

When delivering feed to the calves, make sure to mix and evenly distribute the feed in the bunk. Calves will get more evenly distributed intake if the grain is spread evenly instead of most of it being dumped in one end and then spread thin along the rest of the bunk.

“Follow these steps, and you should have healthy, growing calves,” Marston said.

Weaning is an excellent time to prepare the calf crop to become herd replacement or for

future marketing opportunities by implementing health programs and transitioning to feed rations, says Ohio State University Extension beef coordinator John Grimes.

It is also a great time to determine the pregnancy status of the breeding herd.

Management practices for both these groups can go a long way to determine the ultimate profitability of the herd, Grimes says in an Extension news release.

The factor that should ultimately sort a female to the keep or cull pen is pregnancy status. The three primary methods used in pregnancy diagnosis are rectal palpation, ultrasound evaluation or blood testing.

Pregnancy diagnosis is relatively inexpensive, especially when you consider the potential savings of expenses it facilitates.

While variable costs such as feed have moderated somewhat, it is still fairly expensive to maintain a cow on an annual basis.

It is fair to say the annual carrying costs for a beef female can run from $700 to over $1,000 depending on the situation, Grimes says.

Carrying an open female over to the next season only compounds the accumulation of expenses. In nearly every case, the producer would be better off selling the open female and replacing her with a bred female.

The pregnant female is the foundation for any productive cow-calf operation, Grimes says. A pregnant female can also create some additional marketing opportunities for the producer.

Now is an excellent time to evaluate your herd and consider marketing decision for the rest of the fall.
