trailsMOUNTAIN PLAY BRINGS PETER PAN
TO MOUNT TAMALPAIS, MAY 23
Join us at the Cushing Memorial Amphitheater on Mt. Tam for a May 23, 2pm theater performance of Peter Pan. The Mountain Play Association is offering CAC members discounted rates of only $25 per person for another year of preferred seating under the canopy at the front of the stage.
This is an excellent fund-raising opportunity for the Club, and we encourage members to spread the word and purchase tickets for friends and family interested in attending. Just purchase the tickets and distribute them yourself to the people for whom you procured them. Contact Sonia Bastidas Fuetsch with questions or more information on special arrangements or ticket pick-up at 415-895-6230 or [email protected].
You may also just mail a check in the amount of $25 per ticket to Sonia Bastidas Fuetsch, 1186 Midway Court, Novato, CA 94947. Tickets will be mailed back to you, so please include a return mailing address. Sonia will also be at Alpine Lodge on May 23 from 9–11am to distribute any tickets if still available that day. Last year was sold out so purchase your tickets early!
Note that Mountain Play buses will not be operating on this date; attendees will hike or drive to the theater on their own.
— Sonia Bastidas, Event Coordinator

GRANDPARENTS' SUMMER CAMP AT ALPINE LODGEJUNE 13 TO JUNE 20
Schools are out in most areas by Saturday June 13 and you’re invited to bring your grandchildren or great-grandchildren for a day, and up to a week of lodging and daily activities. Join other grandparents on trips to the Marine Mammal Center at Rodeo Beach. We’ll be taking the Tiburon ferry to Angel Island one day for a hike and picnic on the largest island in the San Francisco Bay. We’ll pack a lunch and visit the East Peak of Mt. Tamalpais stopping in at the Gravity Car Visitor Center before taking a short hike and explore the fire lookout. We’ll save one day to spend at the beach and maybe fly kites. We’re keeping our eye on the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy calendar and will likely join them one day for an exciting outing.
We’ll enjoy karaoke, games, and exciting activities each evening. Fresh baked cookies, hide and seek, ping pong and other activities will make the time fly while providing you and your grandchildren quality memories. We’ll have story time before the children say good night and adults can share some quiet time.
We’ve found children entertain each other and with a little supervision, families will bond with fond memories of time spent at the Alpine Lodge. We hope you’ll be able to join us on this new adventure. Please phone Mary Cahill at (530)798-9601 or send your deposit to 422 Lamarque Court, Grass Valley, CA 95945.
—Mary Cahill, Event Coordinator
2 TRaILS may 2015
Hello everyone,
As I start my final year as president, I’m well aware that it would not have happened were it not for all the help I’ve been given. Space doesn’t allow me to list everyone so I will list only those leaving or filling the vacated positions. Our club would not run were it not for people like those mentioned here and those mentioned in every issue of Trails.
I want to thank Dan Larson, Edie Nelson, Russ Toran and Jay Gustafson for working to improve Alpine and to build on the teamwork which already existed. The lodge and its grounds look wonderful. All have volunteered to help the new trustees (Tom Coleman, Barbara Hills and Howard Ortman) wherever needed and to finish projects that are underway. Two additional trustees are needed; can you fill these empty shoes?
Up at Echo there are changes too. A big thanks to treasurer Diane Ryan and project manager Kurt Eichstaedt. As in the case of the Alpine Trustees the lodge and club are better because of the skills and love of the lodge Diane and Kurt brought. Richard Thornton (currently serving on the Finance Committee) will be the new Echo treasurer and long time Echo host Nick Gregoratos will fill the position vacated by Kurt.
There are changes on the Board too. John Hannum has decided to hang up his spurs and leave the position of past president. I think John has served on the Board longer than anyone. Vice-president Graham Forder was on the Board to greet me. Graham is responsible for writing and following up on all the by-law changes. Secretary Doug Evans is responsible for the basic framework of our website, language of our non-discrimination policy and for taking minutes at meetings. Although Helena Troy has asked to be relived of her Board duties, she has volunteered to stay on until a replacement steps up. Helena has been a Jackie-of-all trades. She has filled in as secretary, coordinates electronic communication, updates the website, and along with the others, provides me with advice on everything. Joining the Board are Mark Sapiro and Alpine Trustee Jay Gustafson as Vice President. Board member Margy Eller will assume the responsibility of Secretary.
There are changes on the Committee front. Camille Smith-Balloon has assumed the Youth Activities Chair. A new committee, the Event Committee is assuming the duties of the Social Activities Committee. On this committee are Eva Libien, Sue Karp, Edie Nelson, Mary Jane McKown, Jordan Herrmann, Marguerite Murphy, and Carroll Pearson. All contact information is listed in the column to the left. Please consider doing your yearly volunteering by helping with one of the events.
Simple subtraction shows more are leaving than joining. Please contact any Board or Committee member with your offer to help. Thank You,
— Jim Nixon, President

Please consider signing up to be an innkeeper at Alpine Lodge on a Sunday of your choice (Any Sunday listed as open or after June 28.) It is a great way to spend a day at our beautiful Lodge while fulfilling a portion of volunteer duties. Innkeepers need not be host trained. I will provide you a list of brief instructions and suggestions, outlining what innkeepers traditionally have done. If you don’t wish to serve alone, consider serving with another member as co-innkeepers for the day.
The web innkeeper calendar is updated as volunteers step up. Check the CAC online calendar for the latest innkeeper schedule. Only first names of innkeepers are visible on the public view of the website (Members’ view of the schedule contains more detailed information.)
To reserve a date or offer feedback, contact Jana Shober at 916-690-1828 or [email protected].

MARIN MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRICT TRAIL DAY WITH CAC
A great time was had by all at the trail crew with the Marin Municipal Water District on April 9. About 25 volunteers together with MMWD staff cleared brush along the Matt Davis Trail, and removed rocks and large roots from the Nora and Matt Davis Trails. The workers returned to Alpine Lodge for a well-earned lunch of salad and lasagna. Take a look and admire our work the next time you hike these trails. Many thanks to Jay Gustafson and Suzanne Whelan at MMWD for making this event possible, and to Diane Smith for managing lunch and cleanup at the Lodge. We look forward to more community service opportunities like this in the future.

ANYONE CAN BE A NEW MEMBER SPONSOR
A huge thank you to all who have helped CAC membership thrive by sponsoring new members. This is how the Club has survived for over 100 years. Because we do not advertise, our membership grows mainly by word-of-mouth.
Membership in the Club comes with some unique benefits as well as responsibilities, shared by all. The vitality of CAC depends on everyone pitching in. (We have no paid staff positions.) Here are some reminders for CAC sponsors who usher the induction of new members. When you sign your name as a sponsor on a CAC membership application form, it is your duty to ensure that the new members:
a) KNOW the purpose of the Club. New members are joining a diverse and committed community of individuals who have at least these beliefs in common. (See http://www.californiaalpineclub.org)
b) UNDERSTAND how the Club operates. Walk prospective members through an issue of Trails; and all should be familiar with the many resources on our website. (People are more willing to work on an engine if they understand how it operates.)
c) BELIEVE in our goals. CAC is a California 501(c)7 non-profit “social club” that seeks to be financially transparent, accessible, and affordable. As an all-ages, democratic cooperative, we keep membership costs low, stretch every dollar, and support the CAC Foundation, to which all donations are tax deductible. (See http://www.californiaalpineclub.org/cac-foundation/)
d) VOLUNTEER for a work party or social event. Essential volunteer jobs can be done from home or on-site; discuss these opportunities. Before you sign a prospective member’s application, ask how that person sees him or herself contributing to the Club.
At least once a year, all members should volunteer for a work party and social event or support a leadership team, as members are
responsible to one another for the operation of our lodges, the quality of Club communications (website, newsletter, Board meetings, etc.) and social events, and outdoor excursions in the U.S. and beyond. Thanks to all of you who help us fulfill our Club’s mission.
For a list of CAC event volunteer suggestions, visit our website at californiaalpineclub.org Members>Quick Links.

ALPINE WORK PARTY SATURDAY, MAY 9
Hooray. We’re having another weekend work party, this one on May 9, led by Howard Ortman, Alpine trustee. Here’s a chance for you to volunteer for the Club on the weekend, get stuff done around the Lodge, meet all kinds of new friends, and have a nice lunch before enjoying the rest of your Saturday. Plan to show up by 9am, and bring garden gloves if you want to work outside; wear some old clothes if you want to get down-and-dirty. Big smiles are obligatory for the team gathered. Email [email protected] or call 415-381-7261 to let us know you’re coming, and if you have guests. Tell us if you prefer a vegetarian lunch also.
— Jay Gustafson, Vice President
HARDWORKING PARTY AT ALPINE
A hardworking crew showed up at Alpine Lodge on April 2 with paint, ladders, and other equipment needed to spruce up the place. Howard Ortman got many of the volunteers started, including andre Svensson from Sweden, Rick Jacobson, and Tony Smith. The helpers renewed the old CAC signs, and they look great now. Sara Davis led the garden crew, with Marguerite Murphy and Sally Hernandez. Young Kai Simmons cleaned on the bedrooms while Sandy Borden worked on the bathrooms. Margaret Jacobson lent a hand anywhere needed. Edie Nelson prepared lunch for the whole lot and Marguerite ran the kitchen cleanup.
Thanks to all, our Lodge looks great. And welcome our three new members-to-be.
— Edie Nelson, Event Committee

CALLING ALL ALPINE LODGE VOLUNTEERS!
CAC members and prospective members are invited and encouraged to volunteer for one or more of the upcoming events at Alpine Lodge. Event supervisors include a host (over-all coordinator), chef (head chef is entitled to a free meal), and people to handle reservations and accounting, table setup and decorations, name tags and place cards, and cleanup. More volunteers help the event run smoothly and the more people enjoy helping out. Email the event coordinator listed or Board sponsor (if the event does not yet have a coordinator) and volunteer for a specific task, or if you are willing, volunteer to be assigned an open task as needed. Most volunteer positions require a few hours of work before and on the day of the event, with exact details to be worked out a few weeks prior to the date. See the calendar at the californiaalpineclub.org website for additional details. If no host, then contact any board member.
See the chart on page 5 for the list of events and how to volunteer. If you have difficulty with the Events chart from the website, contact Jordan Herrmann at [email protected].
We need leadership for the events that have TBD listed. Contact the Event Committee if you are willing to help with or lead task for these events.
— Marguerite Murphy, Event Committee
